Oblivion Crashing

Here's the problem. I've been through three reinstalls of Windows, two motherboard changes, two video cards, and even a new processor.

Oblivion has continued to crash with a "report error" box through all of this! Now I know it can't be my hardware because I've CHANGED EVERYTHING that’s important. Yes, I know I overclock, but I experience the same problems at stock speed so that’s not the issue either.

I'll usualy get this crash when loading an area or going through a door. It also frequently happens just as I'm saving a game.

Is there something I'm missing here? There's no way the game is so poorly coded that it won’t run on 3 separate hardware sets.

Here's my current setup, I'm stumped :(
Athlon 64 3400+ @ 2.6GHz (s754, Venice Core)
Nvidia 7600GT @ 600/1630
1024MB RAM @ DDR 480
EPoX 8NPA-SLI motherboard (nForce 4 chipset)
Soundblaster Audigy 2

Probably have but I have to ask, did you patch it?

Yes, yes. Same problem both patched an unpatched.

I'm currently snooping around Creative's website for the latest SoundBlaster drivers. That card has caused issues in the past with Unreal Tournament 2004...

Try taking it out and see what that does. Also, what brand of RAM are you running?

My Audigy2 hasn't had problems but then again, my setup is a bit different then yours.

I've been having the same problems. They did go down after a reinstall (Windows decided to poop out on me... 20 hours lost!!) but it seems like it's just a problem with the game. I get crashes going into new areas sometimes too. I've gotten used to hitting the quicksave button every few minutes.

I've updated to the latest Audigy drivers, so far so good...

I now have another problem though, the game now sounds like s**t. Creative went overbaord on the EAX effects, so now everybody sounds like they are talking through a pipe >_>

I'll keep playing to see if the crashing comes back, but this new issue is starting to get on my nerves. They fixed one problem and replaced it with a new one!

Weird, I have no such problem. Make sure to install the Creative labs EAX control panel and tweak around with it.

I honestly have no idea why people have such issues with Creative cards as i've owned them for years and have always performed well for me. Its when I use an off brand that I have shit fests of problems like Philips or SoundMax

Rebooted and the sound went back to normal, some sound bugs in other games have been fixed...but Oblivion still crashes.

I got so fed up I just yanked the card and tried to play without sound. Same issue!

Ok, that was my last idea, anybody else have any?

Lots of people are getting the 'report error' crash, is my impression. I am. I've never had it happen while saving, though - only when opening doors that trigger an area load screen, and not more often than once every few hours. After fixing artifacting and stuttering, a crash once in a while on area doors doesn't bother me.. I think it's the game.

I crash when I am trying to exit the game. I click "exit" and it crashes to the desktop with an error message. Doesnt really bother me though because I wanted to exit the game anyways.....

The saving crash is what realy pisses me off. I click on "Save" and bam, I'm looking at an error box!

Worst part is, it fails to save the game so I lose all the progress. I've been reduced to saving every time I kill something so I wont lose to much :(

I used to have this problem. What fixed it was really strange. I just took the lid off my QPack and, bam, no more crashes. Wierd, I know, since my graphics card wasn't even close to overheating. I can play all my other "hard core" games at high settings (F.E.A.R., BF2, etc.) and have no problems. It worked, though. Might want to pop open your case, it's free, and worth a try, hehe.
Still get the exit game crash, tho. So annoying, I wish they would fix that.

After doing a complete reformat recently and installing the 91.31 Forceware drivers (which appear to need some in depth work as it is) my machine has been running perfect. That is, until playing Oblivion for an hour or so last night...

I was having no problems going in and out of doors or traveling or anything with no crashes, but them WAM! I got a BSOD right after going into one of the Market doors!!!

I have not had a single machine lockup, freeze, or anything for 9 months on this machine. Now, the new forceware drivers could be at fault here, but I was also playing FEAR, HL2:E1, and COD2 on this newly formatted rig and they all play like a charm. My current Oblivion install is patched with the latest from ElderScrolls wesbite.

Is this game just that demanding on one's rig or is it just that Oblivion is rather poorly coded? I would really like to play this game as it looks stunning and I was getting into the whole gameplay nicely.

Its gotta be Oblivion, I dont have issues with ANY other games I've tried on here.

Quake 4, Half Life 2, FEAR, GTA San Andreas, Myst V: End of Ages, UT2004, MS Flight Simulator 2004, Need for Speed Most Wanted...they all work fine.

I'm pretty sure it's just Oblivion. I recall having similar issues with Morrowind.

You said it crashes when you "click on save" - does it do the same when you quicksave? (F5 by default) That could be your out. Just be careful not to quicksave yourself in a situation that you can't get out of :)

Yup, Quicksave also does it.

Now, I dont crash every time I click on save, but about once every 5 times I trry it.

The game really is just that unstable. Most people are reporting crashes whenever they move into a new area. I just make sure I quicksave whenever I'm about to load a new area.

The most frustrating thing for me is that after the game crashes I'll restart it, and then it will crash as I load one of my saved games. I have had that happen three times in a row before. I decided at that point it was time to take a break from computing.

I've had the door crash and the save crash a few times too. About one in five times the game crashes on exit.

The screwy thing is that I think the copy I downloaded from Direct2Drive (my pre-order was late and I couldn't wait an extra 2 days) seems to be more stable than the actual DVD copy. With the DVD copy I get all sorts of crashes constantly, but with my DL'd one, I only crash on exit, but not all the time

It's been much more stable than Morrowind though. I used to quicksave every few minutes because it would crash randomly & constantly. I'd be walking somewhere and it would crash, I'd get off the boat to Solstheim and it'd crash, I'd quit and it would crash etc etc

this game is touchy for sure.. mine would crash going through doors sometimes.. not often enough to be a big deal, but annoying none the less, it would happen once day when I was playing 6 hours a day.. I am running with the beta patch, the cats mod, the UI improvment mod, and buyable lock-pick mod.. it's just a bit buggy I think.. but such an awesome game also.. love it!

Isn't it sad when a game brings one to that point?? And I mean that with all due respect because Oblivion (and other games in the past) have done this to me as well. I actually get to the point sometimes where I feel that the hobby is just a waste of my time and money. Yikes!!

But, a day or so away (maybe a month to a year if my girlfriend had it her way) and my mind is back to normal and I'm back to some good 'ol BF2 action or HL2 or somehing. Then, I get brave and try a game like Oblivion again....

Son of a....!!!

absolutely nothing wrong with taking a break from computing. matter of fact I force myself to do it. get outside into you know, sunshine and go for a drive spend some of that 3.00 a gallon gas.

just glad right now its too darn hot and humid to go out... guess Ill go play some Oblivion ;)

Yeah same problem with crashes for me, sometimes it will be to the error message and others it will just lock up the machine with a blank blue screen.

Some folks have gotten together and have made an unofficial patch. It has cut my crashes by oh 90%.. I just played for lets see 7.5hrs and only crashed 2 times.. both were cause I was jumping though doors and doing a great deal at the same time.

heres the addy to the post about it...

hope this helps
Man, I could freeking kiss you right now! 6 hours and no crashes!

Still, why didn't Bethsda fix these issues?

mines crashing more now w/ the unoffical patch... I didn't think that was possible *cries*

I think bethesada will (hopefully) fix these issues when they release the expansion.

I don't know what everyone's problems seem to be, Oblivion runs flawlessly on me and the only time it ever crashes is when I'm exiting, and thats only very rare now with it patched, I honestly don't know why so many people are experiencing issues.

After I patched Oblivion to 1.1 the crash while going through doors stopped for me.. but because I had tested so many mods, copying over and over to the data dir, I think I messed something up because there was graphic corruption in the sky... so I backed up all my save games and reinstalled Obliv, then installed all of my fav mods, 35 of them in order and also the unofficial 1.6.1 patch and things run /very/ smoothly now... with Nvidia drivers 97.44 it crashes on exit sometimes... but with the 97.92s that seems to be gone now.

I recently formatted my hd and installed a fresh copy of winxp and Oblivion. I patched the game using the latest patch from fileplanet. Everything was going great until I tried to leave the sewers (yes the 1st level sewers). BOOM!! crash with bluescreen. I had to press the restart button and the next thing you know.... my pc wont recognize my hd. It says something like "No OS found". I left it alone for about 10 minutes then tried it again. I was able to get into windows but when I loaded up Oblivion again the same damn thing happened.

Good thing I paid $50 for this game

It is a shame such a gorgous and epic game suffers from such blatent errors so long after it's release.
I just started playing it last week for the 1st time on my new system with new OS. Only 1 patch ever offically released and I still feel like I playing in a beta.

The game felt fine when I first started playing it. Since then, I've experienced just about everything mentioned in this thread.. artifacting in the sky, crashing on loading new areas (frequently), and crashing when going through doors (frequently).

whoa... did you format your disk again when installing windows? use ntfs?? it sounds like data corruption to me.. did you load up the latest chipset drivers for your mobo? that would be something to try..

The artifacting is a Nvidia driver issue, not Oblivion's fault. Game never crashes for me unless my videocard is Oc'ed too high. Cheers.

Yes I reformatted my disk and I used ntfs. Latest drivers on all of the components. No other game gives me trouble at all, just Oblivion. Very frustrating.

Oh well, I wasn't intending on playing through the game fortunately; I just wanted to use it to stress test my new gfx card since everything else on the the market seems to run 60+fps.

I saw enough :)

wow.. that sucks! maybe try disabling native command q'ing on your disk??
