What kind of graphics card should I be looking at to run this game at the given resolution? I currently have a 22" 1680x1050 monitor but might upgrade to 1920...

It really depends on how soon you would be upgrading to the 1920x(1080 or 1200) monitor. Full system specs would also help immensely.

Right now, the HD5850 would offer excellent performance at both resolutions. If you decide to play FPS games later on with the larger resolution monitor, the HD5850 would offer better performance than, say, the HD5770 (or the recently released HD5830). However, on older platforms (older Core 2 or Athlon/Phenom series), the video card would make the processor the new performance bottleneck.

Right now this is my system specs. I am thinking that a lot of it should just be trashed and upgraded. I don't like my case for one thing, and would like to go mATX...

Xclio A380
Asus 680i
Intel E6600 2.4ghz
Zalman 9500
MSI 8800gts 640mb
Western Digital 320gb
PC Power and Cooling 750 quad
Asus DVD burner

I only need the ability to play a game like Oblivion, I like this game for the continuous play value. Games like Crysis and Supreme Commander (I own both) lack something to make me want to keep playing. The only other game that I have found that I would like to keep playing would maybe be Far Cry 2.

I guess thinking about it, there is no reason for me to go to 1920 res, so just recommendations for 1680, and maybe some for more games?

The HD 5770 is a good choice for 1680 x1050.

However if you want sheer overkill and have $300 to spend, pick up the HD 5850.

Think CPU also 2.4ghz is going to be a bottleneck, you'd be suprised what an e8400 or e8500 would change for you... Especially if you threw a few more hundred mhz @ it

Going from my 8800gts to the 280gtx I didn't see much of a difference in Crysis, and no difference in CS:S.. but going from my e6750 @ 3ghz to my e8500 @ 4.3ghz I saw a huge difference

That 8800GTS should have done pretty well at that resolution. I played through Oblivion with mods perfectly with the 320mb variant, but that depends on your definition of perfectly. I maxed it out with AA and had the normal Oblivion stutter here and there, but definitely playable.

A good card in between the 5770 and 5850 is the 4890, if your PSU and budget allow for it (it uses more power than either 5xxx card). I got my 4890 for $180 on eBay, YMMV

Rather than buy a new motherboard and case right now, save up for a new mATX system. Intel has few Socket 775 boards that areworth buying, and the Core 2 series (including boards and processors) have been in end-of-life status for a while now. I would say "overclock the E6600" but the 680i chipset has a long history of stability issues; since you've been running things fine for this long, it makes no sense to jinx yourself and attempt to overclock now.

As long as your power supply isn't more than three years old, it should be fine for any of the aforementioned video cards. I agree with Danny Bui that you should consider the HD5770, but the HD4890 is a good alternative (especially if you could get a good deal on a used one).
