As part of the Time Warner Cable merger, NYC Public Advocate Letitia James wants Comcast to promise universal broadband for all NYC consumers.

In addition to expanding eligibility, James wants Comcast to maintain and improve Time Warner Cable’s “Everyday Low Price” plan, which offers 2Mbps down/1Mbps up service for $15 a month and is available to anyone regardless of income. Comcast should change Everyday Low Price “to provide at least 10Mbps download speeds and 1Mbps upload speeds for $9.95 a month,” James’ report says.

I think she hit every high point. She really researched what they need. I think her report could be the basis for broadband across America. Too bad Bloomberg gave away the keys to the car though. That's really unfortunate.

let profit for Comcast means less money for Politicians and regulators. So quit fantasizing!

Wow, this plan seems so reasonable and publicly beneficial, I think it's safe to assume neither Comcast nor the politicians will ever follow through with it. That one "advocate" probably bought herself a few future votes though, which was most likely all she ever intended by this to begin with.

I don't like the premise that this relies on, which is that the merger is even being considered for approval. This proposed merger should have been shot down a long time ago by anti-trust regulators.

communism is bad...

Granted: some poor people given the opportunity will drag themselves out of poverty and make something of themselves but sadly the majority will only use the internet to download porn and frolic about on social media.

If they want the internet than they need to pay for like everybody else.

"Communism"? I think you're mistaken. Communism implies public ownership of capital. This is simply regulation of private capital, something that already takes place in many industries in the USA -- and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The funny thing about this is that Internet access is so overpriced that this service would still be profitable.

Comcast: Sure! You can have 10 Mbit (download, with a 128Kbit upload) for $10 a month!
Comcast: We'll just include this here 10 Gigabyte data cap.
Comcast: Oh! Did I call it a cap? I meant a Fair Usage Clause Understanding (FUC U).
Comcast: You can use more than 10 Gigabytes.
Comcast: But we charge you $10 for every 10 Gigabytes over the Fair Usage Clause Understanding (FUC U).

This!

I was paying 59 for a 25/5 connection. Then I just went on my provider's site the other day and noticed that they had dropped rates to:
25/5 - $30
50/5 - $50.

So I called them up and had them switch me to the new 50/5 plan.

What we need is a rule put in place that these providers will automatically drop the price for existing customers when they drop their rates.. and NOT automatically raise the rates without first contacting the customer for approval.

Bravo sir, lol! *golf clap*

There is nothing a person 'needs' from the internet that the current 5 Mbps plan for $10 isn't good enough for.

If this goes through you would pay more to help subsidize those who qualify for the $10 plan. If you were paying $60, I doubt you qualify.

So is corrupt-capitalism.
Leaving the mega-corps in charge will be no better than what you are talking about. ;)

As a resident of Western NY I have to ask, what's so special about NYC that they should get special rates if a national merger takes place?

I'm not a fan of Comcast, but politicians sucking up to NYC has done more harm to this end of the state than Comcast ever has, or even could.

While it would be good for customers. This would be horrible for competition which would make things that much worse in the long run.

You have people that are required to follow tariff rates and charge X amount for certain speeds. So they have to charge their high rates for 10/1 service. If you have / make somebody offer at $10 forever you will see people leaving these people that are forced to offer the higher rates against their will which is then going to result in some of your ILECs being in positions where they have to close down or sell off to somebody else. On top of that other smaller companies that aren't price restricted still can't afford to offer such cheap services so in the end you have them not being able to compete very well either. So in the end you are just pumping more customers into Comcast's network which just makes them that much more powerful.

10m down/1m up is probably faster than the local Telco, if they're still running adsl1. Kind of insane to demand more than the competition for less, in the name of the poor.

Mistaken? Not at all...
"To each according to their needs; from each according to their abilities."

The history of the world is the story of the powerful dominating the masses. Big dinosaurs have always eaten smaller dinosaurs. The closest the world has ever come to equality is America where people are free to start their own business, invent a better mousetrap, or join together to oppose the elites.

While I share your distrust of big corporations I distrust elitist politicians even more. You can boycott corrupt companies and support ethical companies but corrupt politicians unchecked turn into tyrants.

Is today April fools day?

Come on Steve we know better than to believe some rubbish about an elected representative taking action to benefit their constituency.

$10 for 10, $20 for 20, $30 for 30, etc. I'd like this price point (for unlimited of course).
Not holding my breath for this one.

We'll give you up to 10mbit.

we'll put you all on the same fiber, and you can all fight for bandwidth. The only time you will get the full 10mbit is when everyone else is sleeping.

have fun.

If I could get 20/5 for $20-25 I would so totally do it and cancel everything else. Landline, tv cable, buh bye.

It will never ever happen though. The cheapest "internet only" plan Verizon offers on FIOS is $50, when you add all their fees in it gets up to $80 real quick. Now you're into their $79 all in one (phone/cable/net) price point, about $100 after taxes and fees.

What pisses me off more is this nonsense "burst" speed they advertise, where you realistically aren't going to get those speeds, and only artificially see it when going to speedtest.net (since htey know that's how people check), and most provide ridiculously crappy upload speeds.

With AT&T for example, you have to pay upwards of $80 in my area just to get 3mb/s upload.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is due to the grey area between personal and commercial use of a service and they think anyone needing that sort of upload speed is using their connection for commercial use.

I don't see why there should be any distinction, other than that businesses are usually more willing to pay out the butt. Right now the services available to us are so limited since developers know they are restricted by many users that have very little upload bandwidth to work with.

Streaming my six home security cameras is fine at home for example, but remotely it chugs.

Being from CNY I wholeheartedly agree. We really need to secede from the cesspool that is NYC. They are why we can't have nice things.

I agree. Not only that but there are other requirements that have been ridiculous. Worcester, MA initially said they would not let Comcast take Charter over in that city. A month later they reached an agreement with Comcast that Comcast would take over the city because they signed a contract saying they'd keep the local call center open for 3 years. So Worcester is going to lose the call center in 3 years and is going to see no benefits from this change. Yet this was somehow a requirement for the merger. For Comcast to get bigger, they must first get bigger. It boggles the mind.

The most amazing thing is how people keep voting in idiots like this election after election.

No mention of data caps.....

Of COURSE there isn't.

Basically you have hop through 15 webpages, three documents and then call support for exact info. Even then, it's usually not clear.

Until you trip across the "barrier". Then you get the "Your kids aren't going to college." bill.

Uh, not to nit pick, but YOU are the reason NYC can't have nice things. New York State is a huge leech on NYC.

Actually if the NYC politicians didn't force such massive social spending on NY taxpayers, largely to benefit NYC, we would all be much better off.

When the economy was tanking it wasn't Western or Central NY that wanted a increase in welfare payments, that can directly from leftists in NYC.

Cuomo appears to want to finish the job his father started and kill off NYS completely.

Another CNY person here. I would not be sad to see NYC sink into the ocean. Maybe we can give it to New Jersey.

If NYC threw all those poor people out and they started wandering the countryside, you'd be changing your tune.
