nVidia working on G80

man if this is true... poor poor ATi lmao

"G70 already supports Longhorn WGF 1.0 API so most likely G80 will support WGF 2.0 with improved virtualization techniques and new pipeline stages. The likely process technology choice for G80 is 90nm and the architecture is made for high core speed (~1GHz). G80 design is completed and waiting for ATI R580 when the time comes."

1ghz and ready and waiting? WTF? *shats pants*

LOL ati have nothing to catch up to. Their r500 core for xbox360 already has most features needed for wgf 2.0, so all I can see is them needing to work on a desktop equivalent.

interesting about the unified vertex and shader engines

well it only makes sense that nvidia, like any other tech manufacturer isnt and shouldnt rest on its laurels and wait for its competition to come up with a reply or a better piece of tech, its kind of like intel and amd that have processor road maps that go a year or two into the future, its good planning on nvidias part, although it seems as though ati has an answer to the g80 with the graphics processor in the xbox 360, all they have to do is port it to the pc, ati wont have any catching up to do as long as they actually come out with a card

Do you think the r520 card for computers are delayed becasue they were working on r500 for the xbox?

Nope, the r500 was developed awhile back and I believe that ati aren't even manufacturing the chip although I may be wrong. The reason why the r520 is delayed is because it's being very ambitious (at least judging from rumour's and supposedly leaked specs) and with that there is obviously going to be some problems.

I think you're right. ATi had a seperate development team working on R500 and simply sold the IP to MS once the design work was finished.

Haha...well these are just rumours at the moment...we'll see what's going to happen next year... ;)

Of course they are working on it. And probably the next one as well. You dont think they come up with new cores within 6 months do you?

This isnt news.

yes, the G90 looks to be a far more promising card. I for one will not be buying this G80 unless it has the flux cap. technology.

Funny how that G90 deal represented an entire forum in just one thread.

I've never heard of these cards up until this thread, does any one have links to articles/other threads about these new nvidia cards?

ATI still has to catch up to the 6xxx series that's been out over a year. SM3.0, FP16 HDR, Pure Video, DirectX 9.0C, SLI, etc, etc.

They are so far behind Matrox is catching up. :p

And jugding by the many tape-outs, that has not been without problems...
Status que is than the r520 is still not in sight.
And why all of a suddden is the r500 now comparable to the r520
In all other threads, I keep reading(from the pro-ATI peeps) than you can't compare the two cores?

Terra - But I guess that is just on a thread-to-thread basis...or?

the R600 "leaked specs" from awhile ago were more interesting. they're modest enough to be almost believable.

ATI R600 Specs

90nm
64 Shader pipelines (Vec4+Scalar)
32 TMU's
32 ROPs
128 Shader Operations per Cycle
800MHz Core
102.4 billion shader ops/sec
512GFLOPs for the shaders
2 Billion triangles/sec
25.6 Gpixels/Gtexels/sec
256-bit 512MB 1.8GHz GDDR4 Memory
57.6 GB/sec Bandwidth (at 1.8GHz)
WGF2.0 Unified Shader

You actually think these are plausible at this time?

nah not really ;)

know alot more about whats realistically possible around christmas though i think. Im expecting the releases next year to be a bit late howerver pending Longhorn.

I dont think we will ever see the R520. Sigh. NVidia should just release the G80 at just before Christmas time and put ATi Away already. Sigh.

except that would suck major nuts because then to even RUN new games we'd be required to pay $10,000 for nVidia's cards because without competition they will charge more and more and more...

And obviously nVidia is workng on their next card, did you think they expected teh 7800GTX to last until the sun blows up?

And I fully expect them to come out with a new card in 2006. Just not Q1 or Q2. 12-18 months is certainly not a short time for a card to be top dog. 7800GTX comes out summer 2005, next card will come out summer 2006 - christmas 2006.

aw :(

for the next rumor, ati sells out to nvidia!!! that would give us something to talk about for years.

Thank god I didn't get the 7800GTX, next week they will probally press release something even better

LOL what? Let's keep things in context, what I said (and this IS true) is that ati need t bring a desktop equivalent of the R500 core for the xbox 360, this is presumed to be the R600. I used the R500 because it already meets most, if not all the requirements of WGF 2.0, so what does the R520 have to do with this?

Whoa, nV are working on the next card? I would never have guessed!

No Way!

Nvidia is actually making something new?!

Dude, no wonder ATi started R600 dev so long ago

I thought it took mere weeks to make video hardware, woh to the fool i was.

Is it just me or does it seem like there's no point in getting SLI or Crossfire when the next generation cards come out the next year with 2x the performance of previous gen. cards?

EXACTLY! Unless you get SLI of the new card the moment it comes out (spending oodles and oodles of money doing it), you probably aren't going to want to get SLI. You could delay the inevitabel for a gen, but when you look at the big picture you are probably going to get the same performance if you sell your card every gen and buy a new one or if you buy one and then another when the net gen comes out then sell em both and buy the next next gen. The only real difference will be mobo cost. Which is less for a non-SLI mob, so you save money there. Also, if you are selling 1 card that is 1 gen old, you will probably get better value than if you sold 2 cards that were 2 gens old.

Yes, if you have extra money SLI can give you the most performance possible, but if you go the "buy one now, buy another later" route, it is the same as buying 1 new card each gen, as I see it. With the newest card you also get the newest features and such (HDR/SM3.0 etc). The only thing we are missing out on came out 3 days ago, SLI AA.

Of course nVidia is working on a new card I don't know if its called G80. After the 6800Ultra came out you do realize they "started" on G70. The fact of the matter is that after if not before a card comes out, they HAVE to be working on the next one. Or it won't get done.

I've concluded that 75% of this forums users are 14 or younger. Not a clue as to how business succeed or how manufacturing processes work. You see a graph and BAM!! Instant expert on all computer tech.

I must be a minority then...30 years old :p

Terra - But still a kid inside ;)
