HotHardware has conducted an interview with Nvidia Director of Technical Marketing, Tom Petersen where they discuss various topics such as how Turing compares to Pascal. Tom Petersen had this to say.

"The fact is that Turing, just a just the traditional Turing where you think about shaders and you think about memory bandwidth and all that kind of stuff. Turing is a beast and Turing is going to significantly improve the gaming experience on old games and it's going to just rocket when you adopt new technology. Right so we didn't do Turing just for Deep Learning and just for AI. Turing is our next step in that normal you know progression of Nvidia GPUs getting better every couple of years. Turing is our next big step so you know we did share some data that showed a bunch of games; looking at things like Final Fantasy, PUBG and you'll see the perf roughly somewhere between 35 - 45% better and roughly the same generation. So 2080 Ti to 2080 Ti and of course that is going to vary based on the game and based on the setting."

We think that Tom misspoke when he said "2080 Ti to 2080 Ti," and actually meant "1080 Ti to 2080 Ti," which of course would make sense in the context in which he was speaking.

"So if you are CPU limited, like you're running an older CPU and you're running at lower resolutions, then really the GPU can't do anything because you're already... You know you're not giving the GPU enough work. And in those cases well you know we don't actually you know we don't get more work to do so it runs the same. But in most cases if you're paying you know if you're buying a high end GPU, you have a higher end resolution monitor or higher refresh rates, you're turning on more of the eye candy. And in the places where you are in fact GPU limited where you're seeing performance impacted by the GPU; Turing is gonna crush it! And it's it's a combination of faster shaders, you know faster clocks, wider memory bandwidths and architecture improvements. So even running existing games you're gonna see a nice bump."

It's interesting that they've taken this approach, almost feels like going back a few years.

If it was really that great they'd have had the reviews done and product available the same day, as we've become accustomed to. It's all very odd.

course if he works for Nv he will not/cannot say what is not so good about it, nor if the additional cost is justifiable, the average "gain" and so forth.

Say it like it is, without trying to "trick people" or do not even bother. A great product and company speaks volumes.
they truly are as bad as news channels these days LOL.

If Nv did not try so hard to "convince people" then maybe just maybe individuals would be able to see the results for themselves, instead they seem to be very much about "shilling" game developers, 3rd party reviewers and the like to "hush hush" whatever limitations they do have, instead of just showing them "as it is" warts and all.

No one likes to admit "fault" but by admitting fault there is hope to fix it in the future, Nv is not about fixing for the better but "how can we charge more and put the load on the AIB and threaten them if they do not fall in line"

They can call it what they want, but at the end of the day, they still pull some really shady shit and for that alone I have not been impressed by much of anything with the Nvidia name attached to it for a very long time.

Primarily because it means somewhere along the line someone is suffering because of their "we do not care as long as you keep drinking our brand kool-aid and no one else's" attitude shown by their actions.

Reading this garbage gives me a migraine. The grammar is so bad I seriously question this person's education and intellect. This dude needs to expand his vocabulary and research grammar before speaking. Don't mean to be a dick but dear god that's painful to read/hear.

Edit: "So you know, you know, crushing it, you know, totally progression, you know?!"

Lots of people say "you know" and are very smart people. I think it is a way for some people to gather their thoughts to make sure that they don't misspeak. I thought of editing them out, but then it wouldn't be a quote. So I left them in.

It's fine a bit, but that was literally every sentence and sometimes more than once in a sentence. Maybe a huge lack of self confidence I could see that, but it really triggered me. Probably a me thing.

I don't mean to be critical of how someone looks, but jesus h wtf? All I could do on my 100" was stare at his fucking teeth. WTF do you do on the side, wittle trees? People who are in the lime light like this and have the money he does should have better teeth than that. Your on a lot of personal interviews and a spokesman, and in people's faces a lot. so 35-45% boots from 1080ti to 208ti. lets just say 40%. So 71% price increase and not nearly the performance 1080ti gave compared to 980ti. = going in the wrong direction lol.

Oh wow, it's nice to know you can expect at least some performance improvement to regular games by investing 1000 bucks to a new card lol.

I got the impression he was saying that the same generation, eg 2080ti with Turing cores would outperform a 2080ti without the cores, which would be self referential circular bullshit.

I hope he mean to refer to a 1080ti. I suspect many people will need mountains of proof to accept a near 50% improvement claim.

A GTX 2080 Ti is 20% faster than a GTX 1080 Ti in FP32 compute, texture rate and memory bandwidth. But yeahhh, we're supposed to get hyped about paying an extra $300 for a relatively slow card. It will be the smallest Titan speedup EVER, unless they can perform black magic with those Tensor units in their drivers?

Plus they have the fucking gall to soft launch this obvious pail of tripe, and don't expect us to make fun of this shit?

We have to wait two more fucking weeks for results, and until that time we wil be inundated with daily promotional shit. Oh joy!

Not when they've got a bunch of Pascal cards still in the channel that they're trying not to cannibalize with new benchmark destroyers.

The last time I heard "Technical Marketing" at Nvidia, I remember NV putting the blame on these guys for the 970 3.5GB issue...

I'm still waiting for benchmarks.

Wow, nVidia is now rolling out its tech staff because of the piss poor job the marketing department has been doing, they must be worried. nVidia, please tell me again that you are "for the Gamers"? Love that bullshit narrative.

But I tell you what... I'm more worried about just how far the tech press is bending over backwards to assist nVidia in this launch. I've never seen anything quite like this. I now look at 80% of the tech sites and Youtubers with extreme distrust over the way they are helping nVidia with this launch.

What exactly could be the reason for all this "assistive press" thats going on? Money, or free card samples that don't have to be sent back to nVidia after the "reviews", the threat of being cut-off or sued if they are negative?

Well, they've not improved much in architecture by the looks of things.
It's the die size, it may scale beyond 12,14,16nm they've been on for ages and was required and is in fact more efficient when scaled above current shader numbers.

The size of the die and performance is expected even by pascal numbers and memory is improved with gddr6.
But they've added RTX stuff in there so some improvements must have been made :)

Seems like 7nm cards should roll out in near future so I wouldn't jump on this generation for sure.

Yea I think I’m going to wait till next year for 7nm. I’d imagine it would be that’s generational leap we are looking for from Pascal.

I’m sure Turing will be faster but still.

Yeah I am thinking of buying Turing for my main rig then when 7nm comes, if it’s even a performance improvement, I’ll move Turing to the other machine.

I have trouble finding anything on 7nm to even compare.

The numbers he cited aren't really any good... We know that a 1080 Ti is >30% faster than a 1080 according to the HardOCP article.
Overall the average performance increase was right at the lower 30s for GeForce GTX 1080 Ti over GeForce GTX 1080.
In other words, the 2080 is at best 11% better (assuming the top end 45% the NVIDIA guy stated). At the low end the 2080 is no better than the 1080 Ti and this is according to NVIDIA... So, 0-10% performance increase for $200 more at least--no thanks!

Kinda sad now that I didn't end up buying the $580 EVGA 1080 Ti when it was on sale on eBay. Maybe there will be more chances. I'm not interested in sub-60 FPS raytraced experiences although they promise to be much more cinematic due to shadows and reflections. Was hoping for good performance on 4K ultra for current gen titles... looks like only the 2080 Ti will offer that but at an unacceptable premium.

There’s better deals in the FS section on [H]

I had a typo. EVGA official had the 1080 Ti SC2 and the 1080 Ti Black for $650 and then eBay was running a 15% off earlier this week. The actual price for the new one was 552... which is actually about the same as what you quoted but new. The $580 I was a 10% ebay bucks promotion plus a cash back site on a separate day. Hoping that the rumors that NVIDA made way too many of 1080 Ti is actually true.

EDIT: I'm sure there are some great deals out there but I prefer the peace of mind of a long warranty (3 years from EVGA then 2 from my credit card) even though I often end up selling my cards way before then.

Here's hoping these cards perform to the hype but honestly I feel like NV should be paying us for the time invested in reading/seeing it.

Anything below 60% over last gen is a no buy for me.
I'll stay with older cards. Staying one generation behind is the best way to approach PC building.

Im curious about how the AI powered rendering stuff is going to work. Seems that is where a huge performance increase is going to come from. Also seems it's something that nVidia themselves will have to deal with, instead of the game devs. This is my understanding anyway

Turing may crush it in RT but if this rumored leaked OC'd 2080 score is real then colored me not impressed. Below it is my score with a Strix 1080TI.

Deer lord that was painful. I think that sealed the deal, I'll hold on to my 1080 until I can get something from AMD. Been leaning that way since GPP, but... you know, I just you know, need to you know give more you know work to you know AMD for them to you know make you know more you know money.

Nvidia is looking increasingly desperate as they attempt to spin this disaster of a product launch! Overpriced cards, NDAs, REQUESTING NAMES, ADDRESSES and PHONE NUMBERS of reviewers, Tom's hardware's "just buy it" article...and now this. Anyone over the age of 15 will recognize what they are ATTEMPTING to do here. I don't agree with it, don't like it, and will not buy another single product from Nvidia because of it. I hope that many, many others do the same. Their behavior towards the community is simply UNACCEPTABLE and should NEVER be tolerated!

Thank you. It's a great example of his poor verbal communication skills. The use of "you know" is a filler, necessary while the person gathers their thoughts. It also shows they are nervous and uncomfortable with silence. It was painful to read.
