NVIDIA will be taking pre-orders for SHIELD starting May 20th. According to the press release, the handheld gaming device will retail for $349 and ship in June.

Project SHIELD is now, officially, SHIELD. The price is $349. Newegg, GameStop, Micro Center and Canada Computers will all carry SHIELD. It ships in June. Pre-order will go live on May 20th for the general public on shield.nvidia.com. Fans who have signed up to receive SHIELD updates by clicking “Notify Me” on the SHIELD website will have an exclusive opportunity to pre-order starting today.

SHIELD is the one device that taps into the planet’s largest ecosystem of games — spanning NVIDIA TegraZone, Google Play and Steam. Rediscover your Android games with the mobility, control and performance of SHIELD. Connect to your Google Play account to enjoy your favorite movies, music and apps.

So its a consolization of a cell phone/tablet/weak gaming rig with the goal of portability whicle being 5-10 times larger then the devices android and google play currently can run on. All for the cost of a Nexus 7 or other tablet tha can do a lot more in terms of usable function...

Guess Im missing something.

That's about right
The biggest weakness lies that its based on a year to year upgrade platform for its games (Android) and Steam streaming is a novelty catered to a niche market

Overall, i do not see this going mainstream... But maybe they don't intend to, this could be a Sony 599 or just catered to the enthusiast

I don't know anyone that is interested in this stupid thing..but I'll take a free one.

I think SHIELD is pretty cool. It's basically an accessory for your PC. I'd love to be able to stream my console ported PC games to my bed or couch.

$350 LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Did they say $350? LOLOL

What an overpriced product.

Why does anyone even try at the hand held market?

If your name doesn't start with Ninten and end with Do you're doomed in the hand held gaming market.

Unless, of course, you listen to the 17 guys that own a PSP.

IT has nothing to do with not being hard. It has everything to do with a $350 piece of hardware, that is useless to 99.9% of the HARDOCP who are HARDCORE PC users.

You will have that .1% who love Nvidia anything, and will suck their cocks over any product *cough physx*

I think it's fairly well priced considering your new high end smartphone typically retails for around 700 bucks. I'd like to try the streaming out, however for 350 I don't know if im sold. Especially since I'm not a big handheld gamer... heck i dont play any games on my nexus 4.

350 is over priced. Tegra 4 is going nowhere. Google already has dropped them for the next nexus devices. At 250 it would be a no brainer.

This can't be fully used unless you own nvidia desktop hardware. Otherwise it doesn't do anything my nexus 7 with Bluetooth controller does. Won't have games like the 3ds or and you can knock it all you want the Vita, which my son just bought and id's much more impressive than I expected. Having been a long time PS+ member he has tons of games.

I'm usually all over stuff like this but this is just not a compelling device in any way and a no sale at that price.

And even if you hate consoles or not now is a horrible time to launch a 350 dollar gaming device when you have 2 big consoles coming soon that people are saving for.

I've got mine pre ordered just a few moments ago. Looking forward to the PC streaming. My only complaint from looking at the specs is the lack of gigabit wifi support. Maybe it doesn't need it though. Would like to really use that gigabit wireless router I have at home for something though.

I think it's a cool concept. If it were around $200 I might grab one, it would be nice to play pc quality games in bed or around the house. We will see how this goes but I really like the idea of shield.

My problem here, is that the games I'm interested in on google play are games that are designed with the touch screen in mind. If I want to play more complex games on the go, I got my 3DS. I can't take advantage of that streaming feature because I neither have nor want an nVidia video card. This device is clearly not intended for me, and I'm ok with that.

The question is, for the people who DO want it, is it worth the price for them?

I don't generally need to say anything about the Vita. Usually I get enough from people complaining when they're waiting for the new games they were promised.

I think it too pricey but not by much. $250 would be a better target price in my opinion. I'd love this so I can load up a few emulators and roll with the classics.

Well this does to look to be at least as popular as the Nintendo Virtual Boy. :)

My thoughts exactly. Don't forget the desktop streaming gimmick. Personally I don't want to spend $1500 or more on a nice gaming rig just so I can play those games on a tiny screen and console style controller.

so this is nv's answer for all the tegra 4 chips they couldn't sell to anyone. make a device that no one needs im going to laugh when this is released and the streaming feature is a pile of crap to note its killer feature is in BETA and even then its a meh

I'd pick one up at $250 as a novelty item to poke around with. At $350 I'd feel like I had to use it. The idea of AAA gaming away from my computer is cool, but tethered to home makes it less cool.

Are you aware you can stream very few games and you cannot use the PC why streaming? Even many of the big picture games on Steam cannot be streamed to shield. That and the first previews are talking about problems with connection dropouts and lag.

You're giving new meaning to the phrase "couch potato"...;)

I think this is nVidia's "revenge" for being passed up for console contracts for so long--but if this is nVidia's idea of a console then you can see why they've been passed over for so long. I think this thing would sell like hotcakes if it was priced at $35 instead of $350, though. Judging by the $350 selling price, it's obvious nVidia thinks of this thing as a console, strangely enough. I cannot see it offering the slightest competition to the PS4/xBox.

So basically, this is a remote screen/controller for my PC that has to be running a Geforce 650 or better (just got the 660, so I'm covered). What is the difference between this and running a terminal session with 3D and sound enabled? This is something that should be doable on any hardware with any reasonably powered phone/tablet. All you need is a dockable controller.

The difference is a terminal session works with pretty much all games while the Shield only works with a tiny handful of games.

I'm going to play Skyrim quite comfortably while I lay on my Tempur-Pedic with one of these guys. What are you going to do? Sit in a chair or...something?

How plebeian.

We are going do the same thing for about $300 less. If you already have a smartphone or tablet you can stream PC games. The app costs what is it £1.01? and I am pretty sure you can get a controller attachment well under $50.

If anyone wants a glimpse at how well this thing will (not) do, just go to any mainstream gaming website and read the comments section of this news blurb.

The attempts of the Nvidia forum shill patrol at selling this thing are expected, but sadly they will not work so it's probably best they stop trying.

This thing is pretty much dead on arrival.

P.S: With $350 I can build myself a pretty nice HTPC, hook it up to my 50inch plasma and play all the steam games I own. Oh wait, I and many people have been doing that for many years. I guess I'll treat myself to $350 worth of booze, snacks and bacon, mmm bacon now that is something worth spending money on.

If I want to play a game on a mobile device I can do that with my smartphone. That being said I don't even play games on my smartphone.

Some poor kid is gonna get one of these bricks for Christmas instead of the console / portable he or she asked for.

I think they blew it price wise.

If it were priced like say a nexus 7, I'd jump right away. This thing is exactly what I need.

My gaming PC is in my bedroom hooked to a 32" LCD TV, needless to say the Mrs won't let me "work" when she's watching the TV. So the shield would be a great option.

DOA. Insanely expensive for being what it is. Should have been around or at a max of $250. Nvidia has screwed themselves on this product..

This device makes no sense, especially at that price point. I'm not even a little interested... I'd say this thing is going nowhere.
