nvidia surround?

I cannot imagine on top of everything nvidia inviting a lawsuit that they cannot win. Hell I doubt it would get that far, people could just take back their product and say it is not working as promised. Nvidia cannot afford that to happen on top of all the bad press it has received. They are masters of BS PR, surely they would not screw up this badly.

I doubt anyone would return their cards over a delay, but people will be annoyed by it. Nvidia will probably bet that its shortly forgotten once the drivers are released and people will focus more on the quality of the product rather then the late arrival. :)

If a little delay is caused by fixing something with this, its welcomed. I am very curious to see if the method they use have drawbacks like sync issues with the third screen and similar. Hopefully all will be nice, since the option of multi-monitor gaming will be a bonus for all users from both ATI and Nvidia (due to larger userbase giving more support for this).

I'm not entirely sure how accurate this is, but coming from eVGA...
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=266860

Apparently with three monitors nVidia might cap the maximum resolution to 1920x1080 per monitor. Looking at the main website for nVidia mentions that resolutions up to 2560x1600 are supported for their cards, but a few posts on eVGA's forum point out that nVidia's website seems purposely vague about the number of 2560x1600 monitors you can have running at once.

nVidia's Website said:
3x Full HD 1080p 3D displays

But they don't mention what the maximum support resolution is for non-3D, other than apparently at least one (maybe one, maybe three) 2560x1200 displays are supported. An article from ExtremeTech that I found implies that 3x 2560x1600 would work for non-3D displays.

Knowing how well nVidia has been handling all of this, and that ATI completely blindsided them with Eyefinity, I would not be surprised if this was a limitation of their technology.

Wait a sec, my monitors only have VGA and HDMI so I am using HDMI a DVI-->HDMI adapter (DVI card, HDMI monitor). I have 3 of the same monitors like this, so if I want nvidia surround I have to get different monitors? Is that right or am I out of my fucking mind because I might have to do some fast switch to ATI here.

according to EVGA's forums and their moderators there, hdmi/dvi adapters will NOT work, at least upon release. it may change with an update.

I'm pretty sure they mean that the adapters won't work with 3D. Surround Vision (no 3D) will most likely work just fine with DVI->HDMI adapters. The reason they won't work with 3D is because those adapters basically drop you from dual link DVI to single link DVI - and single link just doesn't have the bandwidth for 120hz 1080p.

Not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure that won't even work on the AMD 5xxx series.

Yup, they do. HDMI and DVI are the same signal. You can convert between them at will and nobody will know or care, which is why I expect it to work just fine with Nvidia's Surround Vision - despite what the evga forums indicate. If Nvidia found a way to make DVI->HDMI adapters NOT work, that would be pretty impressive.

they work perfectly fine on ATI cards.. the reason EVGA mods are claiming the DVI to HDMI adapters dont work is because you dont get pass through audio on the DVI port like you do on ATI cards.. so they are pretty much telling people they wont work so they dont have to listen to people bitching about no audio.. theres no way stop you from using it because for all the drivers know its still a dvi connection since both DVI and HDMI are digital signals.. unless their mods are as stupid as i think they are and are trying to say that the HDMI port wont work with nvidia surround..

That's actually exactly what they are saying over there.

I wish Nvidia hurried the fuck up I'm really tired of not having official triple wide support.

I'll admit I'm an ATI fanboy through and through, but I hope with all my being that nVidia's solution works very well. Above the petty war between nVidia and ATI, my first concern is great game experiences and if Surround is all it is hoped to be then everybody wins.

The more people we can get to jump on multi monitor gaming, the more likely developers will support multi-monitor games (native support, no hacks or mods needed). I love me some BFBC2 in Eyefinity, and hope borderlands2 (or borderworlds?) will fully support it. I hope all games from now on have good support for multi-monitor support because for me it really adds to the experience.

Also, if the surround works and people jump ship to nVidia, this will force ATI to man up on their driver improvements (especially in the CF area), possibly allowing me to afford a second 5870 and have the drivers to support it. Double win!!

SoftTH can only use one GPU for rendering though, the 2nd GPU is effectively just another output for the primary card. nVidia's solution will (hopefully) be able to utilize most of the resources of both GPUs when rendering on three screens.

It just crossed my mind that a Matrox TH2G would let me use both my GTX 275's on three monitors. Cheaper than two ATI 5870 cards too.

It also can use the SLI link to transfer the frame buffer which is what slows SoftTH down so much - SoftTH has to send the frame buffer out across the PCI-e bus. If the drivers handle it perfectly it's possible for no performance penalty since AFR already uses the SLI link to toss the frame buffer over anyway. The difference is just going to be a huge frame buffer (they stated 5760x1080 max), and having to alternate which card it's being sent to.

You can use the Matrox TH2G but it's limited to 5040x1050 using the $320 DP version and lower on the other versions.

I can't speak for others, but if support is not there by end of the week I'll be boxing up my 480s and returning them. Every day that passes without multi-monitor for me is like money down the drain.

As of now, two 5870 2GBs is a far superior option for me -- and now that ATI is correcting triple Crossfire support in Eyefinity in catalyst 10.5, I can always step up to three cards (and still use less power than two 480s)

So...you were willing to wait the 6 months necessary for fermi but not 1 to 1.5 months for surround?

Does that sound odd?

It makes perfect sense to me. He put up with more than enough delays and then only to buy something which does not include an advertised ability. Yeah, I think the trust in nvidia to deliver anything this round is gone and with good reason.

I am in the same position, I was an eyefinity user and made the switch for something that I thought would be available. Since then I have had 2 monitors sitting here turned off. Really the least they could do is say something. I am willing to be patient but just let me know what is going on. There is no way I will wait 2 more months.

thats my thought on it as well. There is no good reason why it wouldn't support 3 monitors with adaptors and/or HDMI

For 3D vision or 3D surround, it makes perfect sense.

Bingo. And I wasn't "waiting": I was fine using dual 5870s, but changed them out because I wanted the extra horsepower 480s offered with the bigger framebuffer and promise of multi-monitor support without a DP adapter. nV hasn't delivered on the most important feature to me, which was supposed to be working at launch.

Speaking as someone who works in PR, I can say that the worst thing they could do, aside from failing to release the drivers altogether, is say on April 30th, 11:59 p.m, "Hey sorry guys, uh, give us a couple more months."

That is stringing people along and squeezing as many sales as possible until the bad news drives away customers. It is going to piss people off and backfire; if it wasn't ready, they should have said so at least a week or two ago and given a half-decent reason.

This is exactly what I'm thinking right now. Also, it's not like this shit doesn't work, they demo'd it a few times, the last time at PAXEAST more than a month ago!

Was the demo on a single title? Did they allow any hands on or was it just looping a demo?

And the next day it gets released and KILLS Crossfire and Eyefinity!;)

Good point.

I find it strange that EVGA has ducked this question many a time on their forum. They definitely know something.

You'd think that if Nvidia had an EXTRA 6 months to come out with Fermi, then they'd have had plenty of time to get the drivers for it polished and ready for its release date at the very least.

nVidia has two days to release the drivers, before their reliability/trust goes out the door. You'd think someone would know something.

Right?

Wait, they had reliablilty/trust as a company to begin with? I thought the good will they had left from all but die-hard nvidiots went out the window with the woodscrews... :)

Great points. I have a feeling your supposition that they are stringing people along is exactly what they plan to do.

Don't want to sound like a broken record, but I know for myself, if they don't get 3D Surround up and running by end of week they will have one more disgruntled ex-consumer to (not) worry about.

Always put a positive spin on it, right?

Say what you will, but at least AMD didn't jerk their customers around like this.
Didn't those running CF other than 5970s have to wait for Eyefinity supported drivers at release also?

Hehehe... Don't say woodenscrews. I just choked on my coffee supressing a laughter. :p

it still makes me think about that picture with "Grillforce Thermi - Now with wooden screws". LOL!

AMD has actually this time delivered every time as promised. They said that it wouldn't initially be supported and said when it would be supported. Crossfire support for 5970 came with launch, while crossfire support for dual cards had ETA in January, but they released the 9.12 hotfix as a bonus.

The author of nHancer is working on a 480/470 updated version that should allow those card owners to tweak a ton of settings. I'm sure once released, Surround settings for both 260+ and 400 series owners will keep many busy checking out what's offered.

He's implementing tweaks for surround settings?
