Nvidia screwing around ?

I think the price is that way on the 8800gt because everyone knows they can charge that price. Lets take the whole supply and demand out of the equation for a second. Here you have an 8800gts 320mb card readily available for around 300 us dollars and its been that way for a looooooooooooooooonnnnngggggg time at the same price. Now here comes the 8800gt 512mb that takes less power, offers more performance, runs cooler, and is cheaper than the 8800gts even at these raised prices. The card practically sells itself. Now ATI even has the same thing going on for the 3870 except it is based off the 2900xt. This card doesn't even have to offer better performance than the 2900xt simply because it is way cheaper and has the same improvements over the old core as the 8800gt has over the 8800gts. Anyways this all doesn't matter to the people who are intelligent enough to wait and see when the right opportunity comes to get the right card for what their exact needs are. Look at the 8800gt it already has a new cooler for it, even if it is just a different fan size, and for the person that doesn't need higher resolution gaming the 209.00 us dollar 8800gt 256mb is now available with the new cooler. If you need a new graphics card simply because your old card dies or doesn't play the newest titles you are going to most likely not have the upper hand in any situation because you simply need a card period.

Being the enthusiast segment I think we are pretty vocal about our opinions and thanks to sites like ET and [H] we have an even greater voice. I disagree however about ET's recommendation not to buy anything until we get the prices back down; no way in hell that will work. I think the lesson to be learned here is that NV and ATI need to *listen* to their customers' customers (namely US!!) to better determine consumer demands and needs.

It seems ATI dropped the ball in underestimating consumer demand for their top end card and listened instead to their AIB partners demanding more 3850's.

NV screwed up by undersetimating demand as well and not even having a viable alternative card (although as of today it's the 256mb GT). The entire 8 series lineup has been outdated due to the release of this card; not many people are willing to pay more for less or for only a very minimal gain!

I really don't think either company or even the retailers really stand to gain from losing customers due to price gouging accusations.

Thank God I'm not a sucker for marketing, and games are a past-time for me. It lets me see the kind of bullshit that goes on in this industry.
 
Yep in my country I have had the opportunity to buy a over priced 3870 from Sapphire. I have not doned it, not that it really makes a difference, but choosed to wait for the more cheaper cards to land on mass.

Anyways it seems that AMD has already reacted to this on some level, anybody remember the news while back in which it said that 3870 were not in shelfs with quantity because of some capacitator flaw or something like that. Anyways in that same article it did say that AMD has already changed its tactic and tryes to produce equal amounts of 3870 and 3850 and that the avaibility should rise. Actually if Iam not right, the 3870 avaibility has risen slightly atleast in the US ?

Then again the situation seems even worse with 8800GT which has terrible price gouging going for it. I cannot help but to thin that this card sole purpose was to ruin 3870 release and never ment to be a mass market card. I mean just look at the situation, christmas coming and these cards are nowhere to be found, and when found the prices are in 300$ range :mad:

And don´t even get me started about Nvidias product ranges, they have done an excelent job in confusing the market and pissing on their own foot with 8800GT. I mean who in their right minds would want an old GTS or GTX anymore. All the etailers have their stock full of these cards and they are just not selling.

Both the HD 3870 and the 8800 GT suffer from the same problem. The 8800 GT is usually going for $40-50 more than the MSRP ($249 to $289 or $299). The HD 3870 which should retail for $229, is actually costing about $269. So it's exactly the same thing.
Both companies underestimated the demand for these cards and both companies are having problems re-stocking stores and e-tailers.
 
Ay I hear you Silus and whats worse, I somehow got the mental image that these cards are going to be in the market with MASS. I remember there being stories of hundreds of thousands of AMD cards just waiting to hit the holiday shopping spree.

Yes it was a nice dream, did not happen, lifes a bitch. Oh well I used to wait my 1900xt for almost two months untill finally got it, so Iam used to this. Atleast both firms can showe the "hard lauch" concept up to you know where :D

Well, it was a hard launch, but supply was too short for the demand as it always seem to be the case with these kinds of products. They are extremely appealing to everyone, since they perform almost the same as their big brothers, while costing much less.
I think it was Kyle that once explained that hard launches were very hard to accomplish, which is why we "usually" see the product being introduced first, with a 2-3 weeks timeframe for availability. I like hard launches, but I prefer availability above all and even though these are awesome products, I'm obviously not happy with the situation.
 
The rush for these cards will calm down soon then well see whats really up with the prices otherwise all i see is supply and demand.
 
I think you can expect a flurry of cards next week. At least I saw that 1760 BFG 8800GTs are heading to the quebec region, just for Futureshop ( Best buy's brother here in Canada). And they're 269, ( instarebate of 60 so 330 - 60 = 270
 
many reviews showed that a 3850 can achieve 3870 results when overclocked with stock cooler even at 1920x1200/no-AA and that 2x3850>8800GTX.
there are 3850 in stock at MRSP and below ($169 no rebates:eek:) so why wait for a price gouged backordered 512MB card if you do not have a 30" display?
If someone really has money to spend pick 2 3850s, voltmodded, bios modded, cooler modded in crossfire and start massive bragging rights. It is not a matter of looking for the best card: even without the mods a single 3850 is a good card and 2 3850s are THE gang for the buck option right now.
I ordered one ($183 after tax and shipping) and if at any moment i play any game at 1920x1200 that this card do not give what i expect (forget Crysis- no card can singlehandle crysis at 1920x1200 at max quality, or Oblivion at 2560x1600- these games demand dual cards- not even a 8800ultra can do this) i will:
1-overclock it:)
2-bios mod it:cool:
3-cooler mod it:p
4-volt mod it (ok, maybe i wont volt mod after all):D
5-buy another 3850;)

I wont complain and i wont wait for vaporware cards that offer 15% more performance at stock speeds for $70-$100 more.
 
Bait and switch is not the same as supply vs demand. And how is Nvidia screwing around when the cards I buy are from Fry's or Newegg, not store.nvidia.com. (thanks btw go out to sherly of Nvidia saving me over $119)
