NVIDIA Removes Restriction on ATI GPUs with NVIDIA GPUs Processing PhysX

Awesome. The pettiness of the restriction before was stupid.

nvidia actually pulled thier head from their ass long enough to realize they can make more money if sell cards to ati users?

holy shit.

physx is still stupid as hell though

Well DURR.

No shit this is a good business decision. You still need a fricken nVidia card.

Oh wow - I felt long ago that this "should" happen, but never really expected it too...

Currently running an Asus 5870 and I have a GTX260 lying around... Anyone have a link to what kind of gains I could expect to see if I combined the two?

I've just never thought of looking it up since I had written it off...

the exclusivity only would have worked if physx was a significant selling point for someone deciding between nvidia and ati.

but its not a deciding factor, so this just opens up their market. but probably still only to people who give a damn about a physx

Looks like those marketshare numbers are really getting to NVIDIA; that or things look even worse to them down the pipe. Should light a fire under the used market though :D.

What is to keep them from putting the restriction back again in the future? Watch them remove it for a couple of months then driver block it again :D

I don't think that's it. nvidia has lost most of its share from IGP and mobile segments, neither of which matters for this change of heart (if true).

IMO, it's the lack of newer mid-range GPUs (for $100 cards), which along with the low end, are the bulk of all sales. Forecasts may be looking grim if nvidia's customers are slowing orders and this may be a plan to increase demand. Even is this isn't the case, growth is still expected and it's a good decision, reversing a bad decision. :p

Now all they have to do to sell even more cards is enable Sli on all the older Intel chipsets that can support it :) So technically, their head isn't out of thier ass, just closer to the sphincter :)

I know Nvidia lost buiseness from me on a 975x shuttle I had that could have run dual 9800GT's if Nvidia wasn't so full of themselves so I went with a single, slower HD 4850 instead. Their loss, ATI's gain.

Whats next, remove SLi restrictions so any motherboard with dual PCIe x16/x8 can run SLI! I can dream can't I:D

P.S. x38 was developed with SLI in mind, I wouldn't object to a second GTX 470:(

So now do I get to use the Borkeh filter or GPU water if I use an nV card with a 5870 in Just Cause 2?

Ah, I didn't see that update from 3 days ago.

Mercury Research estimates that AMD also gained 2.8% share in the overall graphics market, which includes both standalone GPUs and integrated graphics processors (IGPs), whereas the share of Nvidia Corp. dropped by 4.8%, which means that the company lost share to both ATI and Intel Corp.
I guess mobile and/or IGP chipsets must be what are holding nvidia up if desktop share lost 8%+. Let me do a 180 then.

I still think the mid-range is what nvidia is hoping to shore up with this sensible change. ;)

This is what came to mind for me, too. Will we get to use the CUDA specific features in Just Cause 2 if we have an ATI card as our primary workhorse?

Those CUDA specific features don't work on dedicated nVidia GPU's anyway, they are handled only by the primary nVidia GPU. The nVidia drivers only set the extra card to act as a dedicated PhysX unit not a dedicated CUDA processing unit or however you want to think of it.

This is was the correct move for Nvidia. I'll happily add an Nvidia card to my system now.

lol! I swear I didn't read that before posting! At least we have a later driver that we can use in the meantime.

Idiots, seriously, both PhysX and SLi are both driver level restricted. And its not like NV makes any money licensing PhysX like they do with SLi, but they would sell more of their lower level GPUs that just sit on the damn shelves. They would probably make more money if both those technologies weren't restricted.

Well, for anyone who wants to, they can just use those beta drivers for PhysX processing in their ATI systems =D

Wow very smart comment...is great we human beings do not have to deal with our own "physx" in real life....

physx IRL?

I get the sarcasim at the start (super funny you must be a hit with your friends) but am unsure about the fail at the end.

u mad?

LOL, Nvidia just lost all the sales they were about to get from ATI owners :)

Anyone care to guess how many millions of dollars Nvidia loses per year in GPU sales because they are just stupid with thier PhysX and Sli restrictions?

Ah, good old forward thinking nvidia. I wonder if jen-hsun huang threw any chairs when he found out this happened.

Why do these companies have to be so petty? You'd think they'd welcome another market to dump their 9800-era GPUs into.

I still kind of doubt it, but this is really all I care about right now too.
Tell me about it. JC2 is the only game with nV specific features I actually care about. And even then the features aren't THAT compelling, and are huge performance hogs even if you have a Fermi.

Someone with a 5870 and the non-restricted drivers should give it a try.

As a quick matter of background, starting with the Forceware 186 series NVIDIA blocked GPU/PPU-accelerated PhysX from working on NVIDIA GPUs and AGEIA PPUs whenever a non-NVIDIA GPU was detected as being in the system.

this is an interesting bit of information, being a purchaser of an Ageia PPU from back in the day when they were first released. i havnt used that card in a while, however since i paid money for it, before Ageia was bought by nvidia, for use with my ATI 1900xt cards, they have rendered this card inoperable?

that is the basis for quite a legal argument against this blockade of ATI. they dont just get to cut off functionality of a product that people paid for at will. il have to dig the card out of the old parts pile and do some testing.....

When I read the topic I thought for sure there had to be some sort of legal machinations behind such a move.

Why? Did Ageia promise you in writing that your card would be completely functional for a certain period of time?

The Ageia PPU is only capable of accelerating games/apps that use version 2.8.1 of the PhysX SDK or earlier.

These are the last PPU drivers that work and don't contain any hardware restrictions at all:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_8.09.04_whql.html

They have full support for PhysX 2.8.1 so there is really no need to use any newer drivers anyway, anything that uses 2.8.3 for example won't be accelerated on the PPU regardless of what software you have installed.

Thankfully most existing PhysX titles do still use 2.8.1 (or earlier), including batman, mirrors edge, UT3 based games, Vantage, etc.

He not talkng about Physics silly, he's talking PhysX the turdy nvidia software.

Think before you flame. (Trademakr'd by bob)

GPU PhysX is still useless ...... even if they lift the restriction..

the only game that benefit it is Batman.. others .. NONE.
