nVidia PPD Dropping???

Has anyone else noticed that their PPD for nVidia cards has been dropping? I just got a 5007 and instead of around 4800-5000 PPD, I'm down around 2800-3000 PPD.
 
yeah they released some new wu's for the nvidia gpu's and some of them like the 5007 cause a pretty large ppd drop.

And so it begins, thoes 4850's lookng better all the time. When they get the new WUs out to the ATI cards the points should go up.
 
Yes, a matter of using a different protein causing the drop (the good ones are supervillin ones and those which caused the drop is the lambda ones). However, a drop of 2000 ppd is not normal. The drop should be more like 1000 ppd top.

Just give Scott time to optimize the core for those lambda units. Mike Houston is kicking him in the butt to work further :p

Yeah, I've read a few posts on various forums where some people are seeing a drop in pernts concerning the GPU clients. Like Evil said, and I wasn't aware of, the first GPU WU's were simply test clients and were actually, as I read it, rehashes of older WU's for comparison.

ATM I still think the GPU clients are the best "bang for the buck" method of folding. I have 2x OC'ed to 3.0 GHz Q6600's, using taskset -c (kinda' like affinity in windose) in Ubuntu v8.04 running 2x SMP clients (0,1 core, 2,3 core) and, going by FAHmon 2.3.2b, about the best I can get (mostly 2665 WU's because running straight instead of VM the Stanford sever sees a quad cpu) is about 2000 to 1800 pernts per WU. :confused:

At about a 170 watts draw at the wall (both are WC'ed) I think as far as pernts go, you could get just as many pernts with a cheaper cpu or a down clocked high end cpu and one of the cheap GPU's that Mr relic posted about. ($99 dollar 8800GT) running a straight client and a GPU client or.. if you've got a quad maybe 1x SMP, 1x GPU and, as I've read, maybe even a straight client and use much less electricity? :confused:

All this stuff is only my personal opinions and sometimes guesses. If I'm talkin' outa' my a$$ and you disagree please correct me :D

I've been getting the 5007s for at least a couple days now and I haven't noticed a major drop in PPD. Just checked as soon as I got home and I'm crunching one right now and it's getting 5120PPD whereas I was getting around 5200PPD before. Considering the amount of PPD I would say I'm in the range of margin for error, especially if you factor in use of the machine and so on.

 
Ive only lost about 300-500 ppd. Currently at 5350ppd on the 9800gtx with 2xsmp clients running. Total is ~9000ppd instead of ~9500
 
Both my 9800GTX's are crunching p5214_supervillin_e1.
Both are running ~5,600 PpD.
As I'm above 11,000 PpD from both clients, no real drop here.
But I've yet to see a slow gpu protien.

I never liked folding the villin protien with the standard client, as they where some of the slow gromacs.
But it ok folding them with the gpu client.

On both my cards I'm getting 5006s and 5008s ATM.
PPD hasn't changed much, fluctuates +/- 200PPD per card.
Haven't seen a drop as was described, but I may not have gotten any low PPD WU. I haven't been watching closely since the PPD was normal.
 
I've had 5004, 5005, 5006, 5007, 5008, 5010, 5012, 5014 and they've all been extemely close in overall PPD. I get around 6k PPD with all of them.
 
Whew " :eek: " ** Beware, this post is only from the view of a jr. pernts w[H]ore and remember any WU, no matter what it's value in pernts, is worth more than it's weight in gold (or probably I shoulda' said gasoline) because in the long run finding a cure for the diseases some unfortunate people have is much more important than pernts. **

A 150 pernts ain't nothin' now a days (like the loss I read above), I can't speak from experience, but I've heard some of the "old timers" talking about the pernts spread in the beginning (old timers = people with a long time folding, not age) and a 150 or even 500 pernts would've been a big deal back then, but in reality it ain't "jack" ATM. I started folding just a little before the SMP'ing craze hit so I'm pretty use to WUs with a short deadline and humongous pernt values (ie 2605 = 1760 pernts, 2653 = 1760 pernts and even the dreaded 2665 = 1920 pernts).

Now with the GPU client ppd bein' in the 4500 or better pernt range (8800GT like Mr relic mentioned) I'm a firm believer of the statements "nothing but change is guaranteed in folding.

I might go to the "folding hell" for this statement, but I'm still a firm believer that the GPU client is ATM the way to go for a pernts w[H]ore or a jr, pernts whore like me, of course that's subject to change at any moment) What I've said in No Way suggests the demeaning of the cpu, hell, I've gots, what to me, is major denaro tied up in cpus, the GPU while one fantastic performer today might not be tomorrow, but you can "take it to the bank" a general computer chip will always be important. (a cpu)

mine's going down, but I think its b/c of the fucking horrible connection problems I've been having with Cox. So I can turn in or fetch new WU's.

It seems like my cable modem is down for about 5-10+ minutes out of every hour. Maybe its time for me to get a new modem? WTF!
 
threw my shader clock from stock to 1800 on the 8800GT and went from 4300 to 5000 PPD on all the units....FAHMON is giving me the same speed of ~4980-5000 PPD on all units 5004-10, 5012, 5214

 
I've not experienced the PpD drop from my GPU2 client. Still averaging 4700 PpD. Might be a small drop, but I've not been keeping good track of it.

 
Personally I think it’s a bit early to judge GPU performance. First the points and work units have to be kept high enough for nVidia to move a lot more product because I’m sure there are promises that were made.

Second, we have no baseline numbers for nVidia GPU folding other than those coming from a certain Stanford staff member’s anal cavity.

There is always hope however, they got nVidia to write the code for the GPU maybe they can get Microsoft to write proper code so we have a proper core to make the SMP clients work right.

Either way before I spend any more money on hardware and electricity I think I’ll wait for things to level out.;)

BillR, you are correct to have hope. I just saw some changes in the programming team and I bet you will love it ;)

For the nvidia core, just let Scott optimize it for the lambda WU and it will probably pick back in performance. Remember the benchmark is made on ATI but we are pressuring to make it on nvidia since from the looks, it's like 5 nvidia for 1 ATI.

 
Update:
I 've been getting 5007's, PPD is down from 4750 to about 4610.
I've seen it fluctuate that much just from using the machine.
 
Fluctuations is normal since we are litterally talking about 1 second difference. bump 1 second and you get 100 extra ppd ;)

Nothing very different with the new WU.
 
i just had 2 WU's that had 1000 PPD less than normal on my 8800GT but now it is back up to the normal 4700
