nVidia GTX 285 or AMD 4890

I have two base systems (no video card on either) and would like to convert one of them into a gaming rig. My question is... which setup will give me better gaming performance with the listed video card added? I use a Samsung SyncMaster 215TW Monitor at 1680 x 1050.

System #1
EVGA nFORCE 680i SLI
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz (Not Overclocked)
4GB OCZ DDR2 800

+ Geforce GTX 285

or

System #2
ASUS M4A78-E 790GX HDMI ATX AMD
AMD PHENOM II X4 920 2.8GHz QUAD-CORE
OCZ REAPER HPC 4GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

+ Radeon HD 4890

I would prefer to not mix nVidia and AMD components if possible. Like the 285 with the AMD or the 4890 with the 680i. I have a Cool Master 850W PS and 300 GB Raptor Boot Drive.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Bioshock, Mass Effect, WOW, Crysis, Call of Duty WAW, Wolfenstein, Company of Heroes, Fallout 3

Neither one get an 5870 or GT300!! for now get an mid range cards and later sell them.Just wait a bit!

again system #1, but change that mobo!!! there are better ones ;)

Go with HD 4890 and dont waste your money on overpriced GTX 285. The $100+ price difference is not worth 4-5% performance increase.

the game you play are half half flavor....

so I would suggest 4890 instead of GTX 285... its a waste of money getting 285 right now

my vote would be system 2 with the 4890. Why? Because you can overclock that chip to 3.4 easily with proper cooling, and a 4890 is nearly the performance of the 285 for half the price. No brainer in my opinion.

system 2 for sure. besides its quad core. if you do video editing and such, make the gaming machine your media PC, and youre set.

System #2 100%. GTX 285 is a very fast card, but the HD4890 is just as fast for half the price!!!

I would definitely wait it out a little bit though for the newer 5870 or 5850 cards, your phenom will enjoy it more than the HD4890 if you can wait a bit :)

Oh oh! I know this one! The answer is......5870!

Mixing mobos/graphics shouldn't make a difference with the exception of SLI/CF.

System #3!

the PII with either video card AFTER ati unveils the 5000 series (it'll become cheaper)

The 285 will give you better absolute performance, but since the 4890 is like half the price for 90% the performance, I'd go with it.

ESPECIALLY given the 5800 series are about a month from release. In fact I'd hold off on any video card til then really...

I'd go with #1 but like others have said either get a 275gtx or put the 4890 in there.
That E6750 gets to 3.2ghz on stock cooler with stock voltage, and much higher if you have decent cooling and raise the volts a little.

agree on the !NOT for the GTX285. either go with the GTX275 of the 4890. the GTX285 is just stupidly priced compared to either.

the biggest issue between those two systems for me would be the nvidia chip set. go with the AMD if your only option is the 680i

ok, so the question was which system will be faster, system one or system two. In almost everything but crysis (and not but much), system two will be faster as long as they both stay stock, but that's just IMO.

System 2 is faster then system 1, so even if you put a GTX285 into system one, it might end up being slower then system 2 with a 4890 =) and cost more

Phenom 2 940 > E6850 in every way

I would choose system 2. I don't think mixing Nvidia and AMD parts will make much difference. A GTX 275 and HD 4890 are more or less equal. Choose the videocard which is priced the lowest. :)

I think the purpose of him not wanting to mix, is in case he wants to go for SLI / Crossfire in which case, you would need the respective platform (680i for Nv, and the AMD chipset for the 4890)

^^

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. I don't have experience with Crossfire/SLI so I didn't realize it. Sorry about that.

I own three 285's and totally agree there overpriced but very powerfull when voltage modded and watercooled for 800mhz core speed nasty power.

But I would still go with the 4890 phenom system and you will be very satisfied, I want to pick up a 4890 just to play with. Those cards are beast and only way I would suggest otherwise is pick up a used GTX280 to hold you over till new cards come out.

I also agree 285 is faster and stronger But its way over priced now. I'd rather get 2 4890 than 1 285

they are nice, I just can't recommend them either, but much like muscle cars they are fun:D

system 2 but wait until ATI releases details on the next gen as this will surely drive the prices of current gen down

I would normally point out how sometimes the difference between a card like the 275 and a the 285 may justify the extra expense, but I don't think that is the case with the 275/285. Get the 275 and don't look back. Even the el cheapo vanilla XFX version for $200 or whatever it was has serious muscle.

If you are at a resolution above 1680 you might want to wait for the new ATi. 1680 and below, the 275 is golden.
