I have heard a rumor  that nVidia was really pissed off last fall when ATI got the HalfLife2 bundle. So now nVidia plan to get back at them by including the next hottest game compared to HL2, and that is Doom]l[, in their new GeForceFX-6000 code named NV40 :)

This way nVidia will actually have their new cards ready in April, and Doom]l[ will REALLY be in the box, no fuking coupon.

opinions

UPDATE;

Take this with a pinch of salt but Faud at the inquirer says there is a strong indication that NVIDIA will include a DOOM III voucher for NV40 cards.

WE NOW HAVE very strong reasons to believe that Nvidia is going to make the pact with the devil and going to ship a Doom 3 voucher with its latest cards. This comes from a few conversation that we had in the last few days after the NV40 and NV45 storm that we created and some of them suggested that Nvidia already won this deal.

Oh man, I just bought my 5900. :( If I had waited a few weeks, it would have gone way down... :p

Doom ]I[? Interesting. I'm not particularly interested in that game, but it's not a big deal. :p

Any info on the FX 6000 at all in itself?

Due to the fact that Doom 3 was a TWIMTBP title while it was still indevelopment, nvidia adding "ultra shadow" technology dedicated basically to stencil shadowing (the biggest part of doom 3) I'm pretty sure it's safe to say the 6800 ultra or whatever it will be called will have a shiny case with doom 3 inside. Especially since they're both set to debut at the same time.. Feb or march.

Either way, it's a definate smart idea to do.

Ironic that Doom ]I[ has interested me more than HL2 has. :p

I might just have to go for another new card... Man, a 5200, a 5900, and now a??? 6200? :p

Wonder what new technology they're going to pull out now. Hope it isn't like the GF2 -> GF4 changes. GF2 had more raw power, whereas ghe GF4 split up it's power so much that it couldn't keep up with a GF2 when it came down to the basics. :p The GF2 GTS card had a better fill rate than any GF4 MX or my FX 5200 cards ever got. :p

Uhh we already knew this, why else would nvidia pay activision all that money for marketing?

and nvidia's strong point was always open gl, carmacks choice.

crap, I pre-ordered DOOM 3 at best buy. ;()

I preordered Doom 3 at EB and have 5900 in teh mail.. oh well, I'm not made of money and wouldn't have money for the 6000U or whatever anyway... besides, I'll have a 5950U with 128MB RAM for $150 =D

NVIDIA is probably waiting for a firm release date before they announce anything officially.

I don´t really care...

I just bought my video card...
I´m not buying a new video card till the middle of 2005...

not really, they've just never given an official release date for it

There has been no "debut" date set for Doom3. Especially not this month.

i find it ironic that i bought my geforce 3 because nvidia was raving about how it was going to own at doom 3, and all these kewl demos were going around showing off the lighting. that was only what, say... 2 or so years ago?

lets not forget when they said the geforce 3 might not be powerful enough to own doom3 anymore.... then started hyping up the geforce 4 with the same crap..... the demos, e3, etc....

not that they didnt hype it enough during the geforce 5x series with all their pr disclosures and claims, but they're shipping the game with a geforce 6x series? thats not very comforting as a consumer.

even though its not nvidias fault for the game not being out already, its definitely their fault for blowing smoke up the worlds ass, and the same goes for ati and half life 2, and its our mistake for listening.

i'll end my whine with this: i'll believe it when i see it. this whole packaging games with cards thing sound great, but i've come to dislike talk and promises and all that jazz. all i want to see is results.

Remember when the Voodoo 5500 came out and it had Halo on the back of the box as a picture of what a game would look like on a VooDoo5? That was a good 4 years ago if not more and Halo just came out 6 months ago. I think that is worse than the GF3 and D3 thing. . . . . . . espceially since Halo was nothing special at all on the PC (nothing new over XBox)

But if they hadn't hyped the technology, would it have gained a foothold and made our modern games possible?

Either way, I am with you on the wait and see thing, look at poor ATi right now, lots of coupons…no HL2. I just get a new card when my games start felling a little sluggish and I have an extra $400-$500, usually about every 12-18 months. I figure PCI-E will be established then and it will be a perfect time for an upgrade.

you're totally right, but i think the hype is coming down the wrong pipe the game developers should be delivering the hype about the software, not the video card companies. it seems almost like ati and nvidia started wearing their penises right on their foreheads, just to show us how big they are.

i feel that its just wrong to push hardware as being the best for a given game, giving people all sorts of incentives to buy that hardware, then coming out with newer better stuff before the game is going to be released. sigh. i guess i got it all wrong. they'll never stop doing it, i just have to stop listening.

i agree with the whole upgrading when the games are in your boxen that you cant run perfectly. THAT'S when one should upgrade, fully ;)

yes poor ati who is only doing really well  more like the poor users who dont have the game because it was delayed

id never has and never will give release dates guys.... EB and Gamestop are just estimating them.

I would suggest that people stop buying cards for games that are not out yet. I don't care if it is ATI or NVIDIA offering them. You are just setting yourself up for a big dissapointment doing so....not to mention wasting money.

Buy cards for today's games. If you must, you can venture a guess at how a card "might" perform on future types of games (like D3D or openGL), but even at that, your card may have the technology needed but lack the horsepower demanded by the time games(good games) come out. But, do not purchase a card for a single non-existant game.

voodoo 6k anyone? that would be so messed up o_O

if i were nvidia i'd skip the 6000 name altogether...

min specs for d3 are going to be in the realm of 1ghz cpu and gf1. and this is with the lighting on because in that engine the lighting is going to be as central as the polygons or the textures, and it will be treated as such (first class rendering citizen as carmack calls it), chances are you won't even be able to turn the shadows off.

The video cards have to be sold before the video game companies know which card to optimize for.
Obviously they want it to run best on the most popular cards, some go the extra mile and fix it for all if funds allow.z

edit: to clarify, more or less which generation rather than card. DX8 vs DX7 rather than 8500 vs Geforce 3.
If there are few DX9 cards out, developers wouldn't spend time programming for them.

I believe the opposite. They like to take advantage of new features. But since games are in development for so long, you cant just go re-write a engine to take advantage of a new DX when it comes out mid development.

Games take 2-3 years to make. Developers don't think of what people have now when they make games. And oh yea, id has never missed a release date because they never set one.

Since it's in activision's second quarter of 2004, I do think march is a perfect timeframe with nv40 coming out and it being the whole second quarter thing

i know i'm just venting, sorry to sound so sour.

just like you said, the developers focus on what features are available through the latest microsoft directx software (although there is openGL and a couple scarce others), as opposed to focusing on specific features of a geforce X or an ati X, etc.

however, the features available in the latest software are available through microsoft (or whatever development team would be applicable) at the same time they become available to the vpu engineers. while you are right that they always will have to optimize / fix things for each vendors respective cards, the raw features a game will have is moreso dependant on directX features and which ones / standards will become available. at this point, its safe to say that vpu engineers will follow suit with whatever directX makes available within software, and game developers generally know that these features will be available for their use at some point in time.

i've venting because to the average person, all this hype materializes into a notion that a particular piece of hardware was designed for a specific piece of software... followed by the harsh realization that the hardware becomes outdated or even obsolete by the time the software is available. i know thats the way everything in the computer world works, i'm not in denial, i just think its really f'd up when one feels like its totally rubbed in one's face.

/end rant :)

I hope they don't call the new cards "FX" because if they're actually good that's still not going to reflect well.

I agree, but its too late, I just read somewhere last week, that the NV40 high end card is to be named "GeForceFX-6xxx" Which is totally fucking lame
I thought for sure the GeForce4 would be the last one named that, then the gay GeForceFX name, etc.. When will it end.

I mean the NV40 is supposed to be a brand new card, it should be called Rampage or Eclipse like 3DFX planned

Damn and I expected them to call them GeForce XP's or XT's :/

I don't want to see them call it the FX because after how the current FX series bombed, why would you apply that to your shiny new and (hopefully) good card?

Hell, even Rage was a better name than GeForce. :p

The name doens't bother me that much... It would be nice to get away from it, though. :( TI was better than FX...

GeForce
GeForce 2
GeForce 2 GTS/TI
GeForce 3
GeForce 3 TI
GeForce 4
GeForce 4 TI
GeForce FX 5
GeForce FX 6?

Lame... Just revising the same card...
