Pricewatch - There is trouble in Nvidialand. AMD’s new graphics cards apparently have surprised Nvidia, forcing Nvidia to sharply cut prices of its new cards. Sources told TG Daily that Nvidia is adjusting its marketing strategy to GeForce 8800 cards to avoid what has all the signs for a big sales decline on the high end. Of course, that means that it is a good time for graphics cards shoppers. Here’s some insight in what you can expect to find on the market.

Nvidia fanboy here and its about time Nvidia got a well deserved spanking.Taking advantage of market dominance by shafting customers on price, nothing innovative, and telling industry no 10.1 support.
They made their bed so let them lie in it

Yeah, looks like NVIDIA has screwed themselves in a corner this time, looks like ATI won the performance crown and price this time. Maybe they will learn from this mistake this time and not screw up the next time.

What's going to be intresting is what nVidia comes out with after the 4870x2 and how quickly they can respond.

If they can respond well in the fall refresh or sooner I'd be impressed but we may have to wait Q1 2009.

And then its starts all over again with R800. Hope Amd/ATI will keep this going with that gen and not slump

Not gonna happen I'm afraid. As soon as Nvidia get a card out that is significally faster (20-30% or so) than ATI I'll bet we will see sky high prices again. :(

I hope the money that AMD make from this rounds win goes towards powering their next generation of GPUs and gets Nvidia off their ass, I believe ultimately Nvidia make better products but they've become lazy and greedy with the 8800 success.

With the prices that the GTX280 are at now, had I not got my 4870's I might have gone for 2 280's in SLi at this price, overall very good value for money considering the powerhouse that the GTX 280 is.

No prob for me as long as the ATI card is less than 50% the price.

Nvidia deserves this - they kept re-releasing the same card under a different name for several years instead of innovating and coming up with something new. Then when they finally come up with something new (still no DX 10.1), they think they can charge $650 for it.

I don't get why people talk about DX10.1 like the differences between DX10 and DX10.1 are as vast as the differences between DX9 and DX10.. From what I could find on it, DX10.1 is just the addition of a few features that were supposed to be in the original DX10, most of which nvidia cards already had.

This makes me happy..
it says to see the best deals in august...and ill be buying my new card august 25 when i get back from vacation...how perfect

nVidia is in a tough spot.. they took the "Brute Force" approach and didnt streamline it until the G92...

Now they are doing the same thing.. G200 is huge.. It will take a major streamline to make it competative, as the die is probably costing them a fortune.

ATI started this round with an elegant solution and further streamlining it will make them even more competative in the next round.

(Next round being the "toc" refreshes that even video card companies follow now).

Ahh there comming out with DX11 soon.. Time to get a new card again to keep up :)

This DirectX support has become such a marketing term. Useless. Absolutely useless. Almost like those people advertising FX5200 with... 512 MB of onboard video RAM. So to any video card buyers, I think it's safe to not give a damn about what DirectX version is supported. They'll all play the same games anyway, more or less.

By the time DX11 comes out and is in use, the hardware will be cheaper.

Today.. A person that had a "7" series card is ready for a real upgrade.. Buying a DX10 part is Uber cheap for those people now..

Its not going to be an issue.

This is far too cynical. While DX 10 is not as big a leap as DX 9 over DX 8, its a change that its starting to have impact. We're talking about an API, and those tend to change very incrementally over time as it takes time to develop the skills and techniques to use the new API.

Its a Catch 22 in a lot of ways.. Devs wont make the games until there is a hardware base to support it. One or two "advanced" titles will test the waters.. eventually the hardware base becomes feasable for the next API, and the title will still offer previous API compatability..

Hell. Windows XP first shipped with DirectX4 !!

It shipped with 8.1, not 4. 4 was never released.

Are you certain about that.. (Im asking seriously).. I installed a copy of XP last week on a PC and then went to install a game that required Direct X9c, It told me my current version was 4... Unless I was really sleepy.. Which I may very well have been..

I understand that. What I'm trying to say is that graphics card companies can easily use the version numbers of the DirectX API as a marketing tool. The benefits from support of such a version can be great or they can be limited. Quite frankly, most end-users won't understand (and I'm not entirely clear on the topic either, given that I've never programmed to the DirectX API). They'll just be drinking the marketing and advertisements. In essence, what I'm saying is, Microsoft is providing the fodder for nVidia and ATi's marketing canon.
