I have a GeForce 6800 (not ultra or gt just normal) and i was wondering what would be the quietest and best cooling solution for under $40. Thanks in advance.

nv silencer is too noisy for me.. one of my friends started up his pc and i said what the hell is making that noise... i then put my finger in all the fans.. and the least expected was the reason.. the nv silencer... no fans all the way for me.. my friends 6800 ultra extreme(modded 6800gt) runs with no fan.. same cooling i have and im pretty damn sure it runs cooler then the nv silencer does at least from what i have seen people report for temps

no lie i have seen it in person.. gets no more then warm to the touch.. like my card.. we got decent case cooling tho.. his pcs a bit louder then mine

we sand the blocks and stuff to make them more efficient.. both our cards top out at about 60C without the 'optional fan'

hes perhaps not running at ultra extreme voltage.. but hes running past ultra for core and memory clock... i belive he said he couldnt get it past 500 core and 1.2 ghtz ram without it artifacting.. and thats why hes gonna buy a x800 xt-pe with phase change

he sure got a lot out of that card for what he paid for.. i did too... i bought a 5900 and got past 5950 speeds... perhaps were lucky bastards when it comes to getting chips that run cool/fast... i dunno

lol, its hilarious when people get off the subject..now back to my question. so you say the nv thingy is too loud? then what is there thats under 40 bucks that isn't loud and is worth the money?

To help the dude on topic. Buy an NV5, they work really well and make no noise. Don't believe what the other dudes saying, cause hes the only person i've heard on the whole forum who reckons its loud. I bought one and it makes pretty much no noise at all (i could hear my 7000 zalman at 5v over it) so that says something heh.

i have a NV5 its not loud at all.. makes a very very slight hum.. otoh it doesnt cool as well as the delta monster BFG put on my card.. its about 5c hotter on idle and about 10hotter on load.. not a big deal since its well under the threshold and overclocks well

the zalman looks like a rather nice option.. but it requires you to glue the ram sinks on.. making it difficult to change later on

So from what you guys are saying, its a half and half decision on what I should get. After looking at the reviews for the Zalman VF700-Cu and the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 , I found the decision to be quite tough. Right now my card is overclocked to 431MHz/842MHz (originally 350MHz/600Mhz), and its Ambient temp is around 37C, its Core temp averages from 54C-60C, and its Load temperature (when im playing full screen games and apps) is around 75C-78C. Right now I am more concerned about overclocking that loudness due to the fact that I can just buy some acoustic padding and put in some bigger fans.

hmm 80 C shouldnt be a problem.. my 6800 GT threshold ( like anyone elses) is 120 C.. im 40 C under that.. i think im ok lol

120 - 40 = 80C

...

i want something cooler than that that will possibly end the noisyness as well and will let me overclock even higher

so which should i get?

Well i Just ordered a Nv silencer 5 and a few other things

if i were you i would get NV silencer 5 and be done with it

No fan, but it runs like an FX5200, except for about 2 moments each day :D

50C Idle / 65C Load

... still call bullshit?

How about no noise whatsoever? That's what I was aiming for, and then I got the Zalman Dual-Heat Pipe, screws from home depot, and sand-paper for maximum effectiveness.

Actually yes, you'd have to throw up some in action video or something. Its easy enough to remove a fan for some pretty pictures.
Where is the side panel or window? Or are you making this claim with an open air case?

I'll get the action video up, and yes it is open air.

people underrate the ZM80D-HP because of the modestness of zalman.. zalman says the 5800 and up needs a fan for the complete noobs that put it on a video card that goes into a dell case that has literaly nothing but a power supply fan

Then that defeats the entire purpose.
we cut the window just days ago.. it ran for months without any window at all(yes.. sealed case) in reality.. open air actually gives the zalman a disadvantage, i open my side panel.. my video card goes from 32C idle to about 36C idle.. cant even imagine what a 6800 will do without a sealed case

load temp on my video card is about 50C tops after about 8 hours of heavy gaming (goes up real slow) and thats without opening the pci slot cover under the video card to get that 2-5 C drop zalman says happens from doing that.. kind of hard to do that on a dual slot card

How so? You get better cooling if the case is closed.

Not with the thermalright. That with the fan moves more air then the 80mm fans can take in or exhaust. What it does is push air over the cpu, down over the card and out the case. Like a mini U-turn.

Why imagine, he just said it was an open case.

Thermalright makes fans? Also, at 60% speed the thermalright doesn't create enough air to cool the card at all. I don't see how having a passive cooler would be benefitted by a open-air case? Wouldn't a wind-tunnel effect be much more efficient? I certainly have one set-up.

The design of the thermalright, with the addition of the fan. If the fan didn't create enough force to reach the card then it would have troubles cooling the cpu as well. The air has to go somewhere, and only having an 80mm exhaust isn't enough for a CPU. Even if you did have an additional unseen intake fan blowing air over the hot hard drives. I see the bottom fan blowing in the bottom of the case, out the PCI covers, but that still leaves the top of the card to to the air blowned down from the thermalright design.

all this verses the 70 mm fan that artic cooling puts on that blows how much air? and we can put as much air as we want going across out 1350 cm2 of surface area

AND the memory isnt getting baked by the big plate thats also connected to the gpu

Also, any cooling issues are completely dependant on the case... I have a praetorian and it SUCKS for everything, but I do have triple 80's in the front, and usually I have a 80 mounted to the empty PCI backplate area (I have an Audigy 2 ZS mounted there at the moment along with a Realtek 8139, so it no longer fits anymore) in addition to the rear PCI fan, I have a fan near the CPU and the blowhole fan. I'd have to be foolish in order to say that wasn't enough cooling. Ideally, I'd want something with 2x out and 2x in, along with not looking like ass... but coolermaster discontinued that line a good time back.
