NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS Preview

NVIDIA’s GeForce 6800 GS takes aim at ATI’s recently launched, but yet to be sold, ATI Radeon X1600 XT. We evaluate the gaming experience NVIDIA’s new mainstream performance GPU provides in today’s top four hottest selling games.

"We are very impressed with the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS as it seems to be more than worthy of its $249 price tag. NVIDIA is simply offering a ton of performance at a very attractive price. "

Going into the holiday season, it looks like ATI is going to have quite a bit of trouble. Although the 6800GS is only an overclocked 6800NU PCIe, it's a solid card at an attractive pricepoint. Having the memory bus bumped to 6800GT levels and the core clock bumped to 425MHz seems to have done the 6800 well.

Right now, the 6600 "DDR2" seems to be trumping the X1300Pro pretty nicely, the 6800GS is nailing the X1600, the 7800GT is faster and cheaper than the X1800XL, and the 7800GTX "Unannounced until Nov. 14" edition should beat the X1800XT quite nicely.

I didn't know whether big green was going to launch new products or simply refresh old products - now we know. But that's OK - there was nothing wrong with the 6800NU a year ago and there's nothing wrong with a clock-bumped version today.

Your move, ATI.

Lets hope for an AGP variant...to think I just bought my 6800nu.

Well, seeing as the 6800GS is the same thing clocked higher, I wouldn't worry too much. The 6800NU is still a bloody fast card.

While the 6800GS is certainly a good value, at $250 it's not a great value. The 6800GT, for example, goes for around $250-$280 on the Egg:

Now, if we start seeing 6800GS cards for under $200, then we're talking. Of course, ATI still has the X800GTO, which, at $150-$170, is hot competition for the 6800NU.

OK, I did look around last night before making that statement. And first off, that Albatron is about the only GT I could find that cheap, most were $320 and up. I am not going to let one sku at Newegg dictate what is a good buy or not. If you want to save a few bucks and put an albatron video card in your box, that is your call. But a single Albatron GT that is cheap hardly devalues the 6800 GS as a whole.

I can't seem to find one to purchase.......

Well im lookin at some of the 6800GT's on newegg. the cheapest go from $254-285 (and im including mail in rebates) I just dont think the 6800GS is a good buy at $250 when GT's can be bought for $10-20 more...

Refurb (you take your own chance)

I think the GS is a good buy....if you got the money hit up a GT..but overall the GS i think in the $250 mark is a good place for it...plus it will drop in price before a x1600 will even hit the shelves...

Now i just found this....i did not know this existed......kick ass....imo

Well I never talk about refurb

All I do is a search for 6800GT's and i come up with 5-6 brands

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814170089 (254 after MIR)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122209 (265 after MIR)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133140 (269)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127158 (278 after MIR)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150091 (279)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130215 (284)

So you spend roughly 10-30 more dollars on a product that is faster and has 16 pipes compared to 12.

I still think the 6800GT is a better buy

Any AGP Variant? I'm still looking at one more AGP upgrade....

I'm hoping this will bring the 6800nu's down in price some to $150 or less.

Or maybe if they make a 128Mb version of the 6800GS for <$200, so this would be really good gaming card for cheap.

Over $200... and its not really mid range any more.

I'm trying to get one of my friends to upgrade so he won't have any more excuses of "lag" (weak videocard) when I'm kicking his ass in BF2.

I am not a fan of the MIR either, and I think it is interesting that the first GS we see for sale is at the $230 price point, 20 under MSRP. I would say that they are going to be at 219 pretty quickly.

It is only 8am in California now, so lets see how things stack up after lunch.

^^^ it will as time goes on....this is only MSRP we are talking about...

I going to agree with kyle here....they will probaly show in the 210 to 230 bracket....

Why is it people always compared street price of one card to the MSRP of another? I'll be willing to bet that the 6800GS will be below $200 by christmas. And at $200 it is pretty darn good card. For the less than $200 crowd, this card may become the new staple.

I think this review lacked a lot of real comparision. The $250 range right now is the x800xl that cvan be found under $250 or the 6800gt ~$250-300, not the 1600xt. I would pick either of these cards over the 6800gs. Like the review said its old tech and compares more to the x800pro or x800gto maybe with the 12 pipes which can be found under $200. I don't think ATI will ever really release the 1600xt fully cuz it doesn't have the performance to compete well or will have to drop the price to $200. I just don't see how this is "Must Have" tech. Other then that the review was good and showed nice preformance for the card's price if it comes in a little under MSRP.

Take a look at some of the other reviews - the 6800GS seems to be a bit nippier than the x800XL, and considerably faster than the x800pro.

And while we can argue over whether the 6800 has Shader Model 3.0 "done right", the x800 series doesn't have it at all. Or, for that matter, HDR or PureVideo.

For all you guys griping for an AGP version under 200, I picked up a 6800LE from Newegg for 124 a month or so ago. Yes, I know, it only has 8 pipes, but I can't find a singe person that wasn't AT LEAST able to get 4 pipes unlocked, most can get 16. True the mem won't clock up as fast, but you get 16 pipes opened up you'll see bigger performance from that than you will a few Mhz mem speed. Anyway, just thought I would throw out there the best AGP card going for the budget minded....

I agree with you 100%! The 6800 & 6800LE are still fantastic cards for today's games. I have an unlocked vanilla 6800! I'm not ready to go to PCIe just yet..........

if/when this card reaches the under $200 market, would it be a better buy to purchase a single 7800GT or two 6800GS in SLI?

One 7800GT, Anandtech did a small revie of 2 in SLI, and they were pimped buy a GT easily. Which is kind of wierd because the GT is only 20pipes and 2 of these would be 24 and these are clocked higher. SLI would help higheten the min numbers on 1280 and 1600 reses but outside that the GT is better by far.

Agreed. I bought a Canon printer from the Egg. While I did get the MIR, it was at least two months after the initial purchase. It was a $20 MIR, and after having done it, it was barely worth my time and effort. Here's one vote for the death of MIR's.

Ahh! The gf needs a new videocard.. her 6600GT is beginning to get artifacts in shadowed areas. Torn between this 6800GS and a X800GTO (Connect3D, supposedly able to flash to X850XT PE).

I wonder how the 6800GS compares to a 6800GT. I know it has 4 less pipes but I want to see some numbers.

$418 dollar SLI soultion....really can't beat that....

Unless absolutely necessary... one 7800GT will squash the two, for $100 less.

:D you know it's amazing when Kyle says wow!

Well, I figued they would come down to the 220 level quickly, but 210 on the first day paints a picture that this will be a 200 dollar card really quickly. Yeah, that is worth a wow. That is going to bring some quality gaming to a LOT of folks.

Yeah, but if you want to line up multimonitor support that is still pretty darn sweet, and you also have to remember that SLI is more about upgrade path that, buy it today path. At least in my mind specifically for the reason you pointed out.

We are waiting to overclock a retail card....

But the GS is nipping at the heals of the GT. They would be hard to tell apart in a blind taste test according to what Brent has shared with me.

Seems this is merely makeshift castrated 6800GT with four pipes closed and the core clock increase to compensate almost fully for those closed pipes. Why not instead make the GT cheaper, and not introduce yet another confusing combination of letters to the lineup?

Perhaps I'm just getting more upset by the ever-diminishing value of my 6800u.

I wonder, since it's all based on the same core, could we pull a 6800v move and unlock those four extra pipes with nvtune? It must be possible, unless they decided to make different dies and call them by the same name...

That maybe true....But what i have heard from the rumor mills that nVidia is working on Dual/Quad display for SLI setups....well tri to quad monitor gaming would be AWESOME for $418 dollars...

like i said...this GS is rockin the x1600 and is also nipping at the heals of the GT...

Also at this point...imo i think it will force the GT to drop in price faster...but who knows...

Either way....the GS is a GREAT bang for the buck...

C'mon dude, Not all of us have $700 to upgrade to PCI-E... give some some slack :p
This video card looks pretty good... If it comes in AGP it might be worth buying.

And... Nvidia has done it again. ATi is falling by the minute.. They need something big to get back in the game.
