Hi, ive been having sooooooo many problems with my computer. i couldnt download things i couldnt update things and i couldnt run things. and i was just about to reformat my whole computer when i searched around and read about how the nvidia firewall screws everything up. so i uninstalled it and EVERYTHING works perfect now. and im sooooo happy. so if your having trouble doing the things i explaind above it could be the nvidia firewall!!!

Get a router if you dont have one, that way you dont need a firewall, just open up some port ranges for games and applications, and the best thing is - if you have to reformat down the road, those port ranges are stored in your router, so when you format and install windows, you dont have to reconfigure them  .

I have a hardware firewall on my router, but i like the extra security that a software one provides. Kerio lets me see exactly which programs are trying to access the computer from my PC, which a router/firewall would not.

Between NAT and the built-in firewalls on good routers, most people are relatively safe. However, this is not foolproof. It's not a good idea to run without a software firewall. I've seen things get through that my software firewall stopped. I use Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 and it's great. It uses virtually no resources and does a great job. It only allows things in and out that you say can go in and out. It doesn't have a pretty interface but it gets the job done and it's not complicated to get working. Also, it's free for personal use. It's hard to beat that combination.

The software firewall is also nice when I put my system in the DMZ when I need to do it. I wouldn't even think about trying that without a software firewall in place. My box is fully patched and I don't normally go to any questionable sites, but it would not be proof against what is out there. As soon as I put my system in the DMZ, Kerio started reporting several things trying to connect to my machine. It's just not safe out there anymore.

Nvidia makes a firewall?

wow, i guess you really do learn something new everyday

I discovered how bad nvidia firewall stinks a couple of days ago too... I can't believe they would release a product like this.

Had to turn mine off just to come to this website. I am behind a router, guess I should take the time to figure out the settings I need....

And I was just going to make a post about how I was surprised anyone even used it anymore, considering how many problems people have with it. Go figure.

Dude, that is so NOT true...

A router only directs traffic, it doesn't limit connections, like a firewall. I have an FTP server on my home machine, so that I can download data off it, from work. The router directs the specific port number to my machine, but this is all requests for this port access from all machines. I need the firewall to only allow specific IP ranges to have access.

Maybe, they need to get a router that also has a firewall inbuilt.

I love it when someone tries to correct another user with wrong information! :) Show me a home router that doesn't have a firewall built in. Every single one I've ever set up for anyone has firewall capabilities. We can debate all day how well they work...but the fact is, they have firewalls, and are 100 times better than not having one.
