NVIDIA Annouces Quad SLI

whats the point of releasing it in the spring when they will have a G71 well before then? that also means a few months after you drop 7 or 8 grand the G80 will be out too. what a waste of money.
Agreed. With the imminent release of the G71, anyone with even a casual awareness of new product releases will stay clear away from this system. Having said that, kudos to Dell and nVidia for producing such a monster, and pushing the bleeding edge.

hahaha, glitch! I havn't seen that in years. I really miss the old boot magazine. Maximum PC just isn't as, satirical.

That combination might be the minimum requirement to play Unreal Tournament 2007 or Solitaire running on Windows Vista.

An interesting product for the gamers having lots of money or rich parents. :)

I doubt it... ut07 will not require 4 gpu's

This is really funny to read all those posts :D

My thoughts on some of the "issues" brought up:

1. Is 32xAA not overkill?...
This is [H]ardForum...nothing is overkill!!!

2. The system costs to much...
Then don't buy it? Simple as that!!!

3. Yuck it's a Dell...
Brandname menas nothing, look at the preformance, not a bloody name...

4. How much power will this draw?
Who cares, the system is buildt to supply what is needed...

I for one find this system great, it's pushing the borders, but I guess some people will never like it, either because they don't have the $$$ or because they are stuck in some stupid brand-loyalty...

Terra - I would love to see how 32xAA/16xAF looks in real world gaming! :D

DELL forgot one thing the G80 in SLI, thier system will be obsolite in less than 90 days.

Somehow I doubt that G80 will be 4 times as powerfull as the G70...

Terra...

Not forgeting PSU requirements (130W x 4), 600W isnt going to cut it IMO minimum 750W and even then I doubt think the system will be stable without a new PSU ATX revision designed for QUAD GPU system.

It will be as the G80 will have a faster core, faster & newer memory and a completly new architechture.

You think the system is going to be sold without a sufficient PSU?

Terra - Does you envy come from the fact you can't afford such a system?

I have now bookmarked your reply, and will remember this for when the G80 is launched...

Terra - Untill then...

I can afford it, I just cancelled my 2nd 512MB GTX due to the G71.

The PSU will be fine I'am talking about the setup of a PC not from DELL, their system is way too custom made. The affordabilty isnt an issue however Iam not going to fork out $4000 on a DELL machine even though ive built PC's costing much more.

How does anyone going to watercool those 2 GPU sandwich in btwn. the PCB?

You can surely cool 2 out of the 4 GPU, i.e., the 2 that is exposed to the outside. No problem there, but how about the other 2? And if you don't water cool it, how noisy will it get? Yeah....very noisy.

By the way, that's not Quad SLI. IF that's quad SLI, what do you call this:

http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/nf4slix16-3.htm

Quad N71's when they come out, assuming they don't change the architecture. Plus did I not read somewhere that the Dual 512 GTX's reached a CPU bottlenecks, what or how are they aleaving the Quad bottle neck of the CPU? With Quad GTX 512's I'm thinking what 80fps in fully bloated settings on COD2 at 16x12?

So, where do i put my soundcard ?

Pray your Mobo has a good NIC and soundcard, cuz you don't have room for anything else!!!

Why do I get distinct feeling that cooling on the Quad SLI is sub-par? Look at that anandtech article and I see very little if any air flow capacity!!!! Will they be offering a water block option for all 5 processors? (CPU+4GPU's) Where would you even fit something like that? Well the good news overall is availability of an unlocked Pentium in the future!

OMG just read that the picture is just of a 2x512... NOt even quad... there is no way they are going to keep this thing cool with out some extreme cooling option.. water or phase change!

It is very interesting to say the least. It is also technically more brilliant than the QUAD-SLi Royale motherboard shown before. This nVidia option has more finesse instead of brawn which I like.

The cards themselves are 2 PCBs stacked on top of each other, BUT the pair only has "1" PCIe connector. It has custom logic and circuits to handle the communication with the PCIe bus since the pair is sharing the 16X PCIe slot. This is one of the reasons the cards are longer, they are a custom design and also accomodate better cooling systems (HSF).

So, in summary you need an nVidia SLi-16X chipset and each "pair" of cards uses "1" PCIe 16X slot.

They are SLi'ed like this:

Card A has GPU1 and GPU3
Card B has GPU2 and GPU4

SLi bridge connects:

GPU1 (A) + GPU2 (B)
GPU3 (A) + GPU4 (B)

It's like dual channel configuration used in DDR systems.

As air-cooling is dead then how the hell would you watercool these things, sorry but Iam not a fan of ultra thin high performance blowers.

I've seen waterblocks for the 7800 series and they are narrow as the aircooled versions with the plumbing coming out the top, which would allow you to route the 4 gpu's, but man I really think you would need two seperate systems feeding off a common resevoir. If you ran them all on one line I can't imagine the 4th gpu getting much of a cooling effect after the first 3 heat the water up!

Ultrawide:

Yes that is how I understand it too, which makes me think ok, these things are going to be even wider then what is shown in that dell pic at anandtech!!! So how do you cool them on air... I think you have to go alternative cooling!

Where does the sound card go is an excellent observation, as NF4 boards don't ship with HD audio support, let alone top flight sound cards (with the exception of the MSI boards that have SB Lives). I have a Chaintech AV-710, and altough it isn't a fabulous sound card, it is far and away better than AC 97 for listening to music. Anybody who has an X-Fi will tell you that they've never looked back.

I think Nvidia should start making dual core gpu's. Easier to cool, could be applied to one pcb, and possibly a faster data bus between the two cores. This solution seems like a temporary stopgap to me.

There is always so much confusion here on this topic. By dual core what do you mean? Cause GPU's are ALREADY multiple 'core'. Putting two GPU's on a PCB or two PCB's in SLI IS their 'dual' core solution. You can't think like CPU's with GPU's.

Reminds me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

"Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."

I mean it is just becoming absurd now...
What we really need is a 60chip p4 system with 7000 high end video cards...We'll fill a room...It'll be fan'f**kin'tastic.

It looks to me like "we did it because we could."

The Dell exclusive gives them am edge and a look for the short run that compares to other boutique vendors.
I wonder if any of us oridinary folk will ever be able to buy even 1 of these cards.....the single double looks intriguing and may be a neat solution compared to the "common" SLI we have now???? The quad we be outrageously $$$$$$

What I find most interesting is that there is no performance results. Drivers not working yet?

I think the pic is jsut an example.. Some random mobo picture that was 2xSLI ready. Ill bet the real deal has 4x PCIe 16x slots (8x8x8x8 when in SLI)

Did you read the pc perspective article?

"It takes the single physical X16 PCIe slot that is fed to the card and splits it into two full X16 PCIe connections; one to each GPU."

while "it" is referring to the chip acting physical PCI Express bus splitter. Anyway you can see the top PCB doesn't have a PEG connector.

I don't mean to mislead anybody and I certainly don't know as much about it as you do, but what I mean is have two whole GPU's on one die. Kinda like an Athlon X2. Maybe you could explain why we can't think like CPU's with GPU's? At least go into more detail as to "Why not?"

Again, I am not a technical authority on GPU's, Manufacturing, or anything else to have to do with this stuff. It just makes sense instead of spending the money on a second PCB and more elaborate or costly cooling solutions.

Yeah, somebody should sticky that because it gets asked every thread.

And for those who are complaining that they should focus on the single cards more instead of dual, you should realize that most people are happy to play their XboX & PS2 at 480i resolution and you can get a $50 video card that will do that in any game made today.

GPU's are already made up of multiple cores, ALU's, etc... on one die, the evolution has been to keep putting more and more on the same die, increasing the 'cores' so to speak. So they are already multiple core processors, that's the nature of them. That's a simplistic explanation, but it works.

that is a rather incorrect statement though. throuh that logic you would classify current single core cpu's as dual core as well, or multi core. a dual core video card would have 2 entire gpu pieces, which can run independently of each other, and you could shut one down and run on just a single one if you wanted. you starting turning off alu's in a single core gpu and you are going to have problems...
