Nvidia 980/970 Availability Thread

No problems. I just didn't care for the way the entire front feels flimsy, being plastic instead of metal, and not attached very securely.

Should have went with Asus because its a better built heatsink and comes with a backplate. However the MSI is slightly better when it comes to power delivery to the card which means more overclock, and i believe the card is slightly smaller due to the dimensions of the heatsink design

Indeed, and I always chuckle a bit when I see the prices, in addition to ridiculous comments like "Limited stock, buy while it lasts! No cancellation or returns accepted once ordered"

And I'm just like bitch please who the fuck do you think you are, and how desperate/dumb do you think I am?

supply and demand can be nasty

All i have to say is the sticker on the msi g4 970 scared the shit outa me taking it off wtf man really.

I plan on using a heat gun at low heat to peel off the sticker with ease.

Reports have come in from MSI that they have made a change in production that the sticker will either be replaced or a different glue used.

I checked nowinstock.net and ordered two evga gtx970ssc from NewEgg after cancelling my pre order for two Asus strix gtx970 from Amazon. It's amazing, when they have them in stock they allow 5 per person. No wonder they vanish the way they do.

That nowinstock.net worked for me today. I did not receive a instant email from newegg when the 980 gaming MSI card came into stock. Basically got the nowinstock email checked newegg and it said out of stock , did a refresh boom its in stock. Added two into my cart and checked out 5 min later. Checked the GTX 980 MSI gaming again and boom out of stock.
Funny.
Ordered around 230-3pm mst and now it still says packaging but my card was charged. Expecting a tracking number soon. oh i hope this is not some newegg return i will be pissed.

I am returning my G1 Gaming , great card and does 1550 boost however id rather have pure silence and higher idle temps with 2 cards than have 6 mini fans running in the future at 1k rpm idle. My corsair 760t has a bunch of 120mm cougar fans and a H110 with cougar fans . Plenty of air movement. I could care less if i do not hit 1500mhz boost on each card as long as i can get 1450 i will be very satisfied with this SLI setup. I love silence and efficiency
forgot to mention on the plus side my MSI gaming cards should be short enough now that i can access my 10 sata ports on my Maximus VII versus the G1 gaming which is quite long and will have to be removed if any maintenance needs to be done with my hard drives cables

I talked to B&H Photo on Sunday 10/19 and they said they had the 980 Superclocks in stock and would ship to me on Monday 10/20. So I ordered two of them for about $15 more then what the card is supposed to cost. Not to big of a difference. Anyways, I got an email from them Monday afternoon saying that they didn't actually have them in stock and mine were on back order and were expected to be back in stock on 11/03 and would ship that day to me. Kinda lame.

I do think I would like the build of the ASUS, however, they are out for me due to the power limitations. Size and sound do not concern me, so I am ordering Gigabyte 970 G1 Gaming cards as soon as my RMA is processed and I find some in stock.

yeah that is a good card too i own the 980 gaming however its going back due to the fact i want a shorter card and MSI cards overclock just as good and they are alot quieter

good luck

They do however the software that controls the fan to cool the GPU and i believe the vram are independently controlled. One fan will turn on and vice versa to cool each part of the card The 970 operates slightly differently that is why more reports are coming from 970 owners with coil whine .

I don't give two short-and-curlies about the software. I would probably run a custom fan curve anyway. Also on the MSI the VRMs are perhaps not cooled as well as they could be. The outstanding issues I have with the MSI are no backplate and the cheap feel of the fans and their housing. They really cut some corners when many would've gladly paid $10-$20 or more for a bit more metal and a classier appearance/build.

Here's a comparison I found that once I had the MSI cards in-hand helped me to make my decision to return them and go with the GBTs:

Great! Enjoy your card
I like the description you made in the first sentence " two short-and curlies
funny

MSI is on par with gigabyte they will overclock the same from all the reviews i have read . Under the heat sink on the MSI is a black back plate which helps dissipate heat. They did not cut corners besides not adding a back plate in my opinion the heatsink is a lower profile . I believe the twin forza cooler is a great cooler even slightly better than the aging windforce which is longer , noisier, and less efficient for cooling. This could be due to the big 100--mm fans that are larger on the MSI and move lots of air.

looking forward to this new 0db technology even while doing mild gaming .
I would only go gigabyte if my case was small, not alot of airflow etc. I own a 760T corsair case with plenty of 120mm cougar fans to move air on my hard drives and exhaust. Also the gigabyte gaming card is extra long which blocks my access to all my 10 sata ports

I am not trying to get a super overclock i just want 1450-1500mhz boost and from the reports i have seen for some reason MSI has been doing very well achieving 8000mhz on the ram again could be to the cooling fan or backplate being used. When i took off my gigabte gaming heatsink it had some mushy pads . I was able to get 7864mhz on the ram. Let us know what you get when you get your card. I will be sure to report on the MSI gaming

Thanks, it's from this week's episode of "The Walking Dead." :p

On the MSIs I got 1500 core and 8000 memory easy. I expect the GBTs to hit those marks--if not 1550 on the core--and be cooler to boot.

Interesting opinions, and thanks for sharing.

loli will have to look out for that quote . Been watching walking dead as well i am on season 5 episode 2.

Yeah you should be able to hit those speeds with a custom fan profile, i am not sure about the ram though i had bad luck on mine. since i was about 150 mhz short from 8k

Looks like my 980s just shipped out from newegg . I cant believe i was able to snag 2 yesterday as they went out of stock in less than 5 min. I hope these are not someones return or RMA. :(
I can usually tell if it has been repackaged. Looking forward to SLI since this is my first time having it. I figured what the heck just go with the best out there and in 6-12 months sell or upgrade.
I am looking forward to broadwell cpus for my next upgrade i am very satisfied where i am at now . I think for me though it will be at least another 2 years before i upgrade to 4k depending on how the prices come down and so on.

I forgot to mention on my G1 gaming 980 when i boot up my computer the fans go to 100% which to me is a annoying having to wait until i get on the desktop for them to spin down to 18-20% 1k rpms. I was thinking well what if i get 2 x g1 gaming omg might be loud and at load while on SLI. So i figured what the heck i will try out MSI 0DB tech seems to be the best card out there for power delivery comparable to the G1 gaming. Must be the big 100mm fans help alot to move air. I will report back in a few days when i get them

update:

Newegg order for 2x MSI GTX 980 gaming shipped 1,159.98 no tax

had a 75.00 coupon code for newegg business purchases over 750.00 did not work . Told customer service about my incident and was issued a 40.00 gift card today heheh
used 5 % cash back on online purchases this quarter

out the door

1061.98 for both cards
or 530.99 ea

Great deal hehhe

It's early in the episode. Abraham says it to Gabriel the preacher.

Grats on your 980s. I'm sure they'll be new. I don't think they can sell you previously-opened ones without notifying you first. Have fun!!!

The Asus Strix 970 was literally in stock for 10 minutes. I was able to snag one before it went OOS. Either these things are being bought by the truckload or retailers are getting 5 cards every few days.

Word-of-mouth has spread around the internet that the STRIX is the best 970 to get, so I would bet that resellers are buying them up to sell on Amazon or eBay at a premium. There was a ~2 week period when NewEgg first started getting them that they would be available for around an hour before being sold out. I think the Gigabyte G1 is most desirable to overclockers, so the MSi 4G GAMING sits right in the middle with the biggest complaints against it being the shroud feels cheap and no backplate.

Funny how just a few months ago there were threads here about how crappy ASUS cards are, how they all catch on fire, and ASUS refuses to warranty them. Funny how times change! ;)

And I would argue whether they are "the best 970 to get" as they suffer the worst from throttling no doubt due to the single power connector.

I know! Many people have lynched ASUS over a few RMA horror stories, too. In fairness I have only seen pics of GK204 DCUII cards catching fire ;), but have also heard this about some GF100 cards.

"Best," in this case, is referring to there being the fewest reports of problems compared to the MSi and Gigabyte variants. Even with the power being the limiting factor, I've seen some reviews say the STRIX can still hit close to 1500MHz Boost.

Depends what people are going for, not everyone sits there for hours trying to get 1550+ core/8100+ mem overclock on a GTX 970 (only to then have the driver crash anyway when they play less demanding games). Personally I am happy as a pig in shit since my Strix 970 doesn't have ridiculous coil whine like the EVGA + MSI Gaming 970s I had previously did.

Well, they should be! This is [H]ard|Forum, after all!

Asus and Gigabyte 970's in stock at Newegg. Take 5% off your entire order with promo code: NAF140671 up to 50$.

Just ordered 2 Asus Strix.

Don't know about warranty practices at asus however it's true and proven they are the worst overclocker for a non reference card due to the power delivery being only 8 pin. The heatsink also extends more off the card vs MSI card which I did not care for due to my sata connector being right there

I will look out for it. The beginning of season five was gruesome , terminus

Should have them by Thursday will post pics of my case and overclocks

I am curious to know why not one single reviewer has complained about or noticed coilwhine

Coil whine is purely subjective, some people can't even hear it. I suspect when review cards whine, it just gets chalked up to normal behavior unless the car is fantastically loud. People have been complaining about coil whine on various GPUs and power supplies for years.

I can walk into a room with my eyes closed and tell someone if a CRT monitor is on within about 15 feet of me, most people can't.

That's a great excuse to return a product my electronic device whines. , my tv buzzes etc yeah I know what you mean been a plasma fan for a long time . So many people returned sets due to the motherboard capacitors buzzing . If you have case fans going , nice psu , and clean sinewave ups like I do I will be surprised to hear anything when the fans are off. I will be posting an update in two days

Ha, I returned 2 Panasonic plasmas last year for buzzing, ended up with a LG plasma :). Total pain in the ass to return huge TVs with glass panels!

Yeah I agree l went with Samsung f8500 and still laugh at 98% of the sets out there. Next upgrade will be 4k with deeper blacks and response time of a plasma.
I was a panasonic fanboy since 2007 they have gone done the drain as a company. Almost a billion dollars lost last year it's no wonder their warranty and return process is a bitch . I would stay clear away from them . In the mean time Samsung is taking over best buys selling products etc. intel is supposed to be renting space soon in best buy to sell its products. Just goes to show you best buy is on life support. Not to mention they use the retail equation to ban people from returns for 90 days

got lucky and grabbed a strix - finally retiring my 6950.

@bbbrad - thanks for the code! helped negate tax for me somewhat...

The Strix 970 seems to be about the worst overclocking 970 there is.

Still, I think it has some things going for it:

1. A decent OC (1400-1450) is possible
2. Great temps under load
3. Silence when idle/web browsing/email/etc.
4. Price

I'm still leaning toward the GBT though as I want to OC [H]ard! ;)

I just found it was not worth it for me. My GPU temps right now for my G1 Gaming are sitting at 41c with a 24% idle fan speed. 1k rpm on each fan. My I downclock mine back down to 1373 gpu clock, memore 1953, boost 1474 "boost to 1500 though under load"
I do not think i was fully stable at 1550 boost unless i ran a custom fan profile. I am going for pure silence in SLI now with the MSI. I really do not see it being a huge impact maybe 3-5 fps if that keeping the cards at 1475 boost vs a single card running at higher gpu clock. Also from what i hear is that your clocks will drop anyway when going SLI . The G1 is a great card . Maybe there will be a bios mod coming out for it. It does have dual bioses.
