NT06-E with PII 710 - High Temps

I bought an NT06-E originally for my SG02. The SG02 was regulated to firewall duties, so now I'm using the NT in a mATX tower.

My temps are horrible! I've got the BIOS set to shutoff at 70c.

I was playin Red Orchestra and my system just shutoff, I popped the side panel off and the thing was burning up. The weird thing is though, it works fine without the side panel.

I have a Coolermaster fan on, it runs about 750-800rpm, is that to slow?

I've considered jumping to ATX anyway, but for the time being, whats a good HSF that bolts in and sits vertically ( like this " | ", not like this " -- "). Preferably a type that bolts through the board.

I've already considered the Mugen 2, since its bolt through, and sits the way I want. Plus... its freakin huge and at a good price.

BTW, my 710 sits at 3GHz, so its mildly overclocked.
 
try a higher CFM fan first.. and see if that helps the temps more.. if a higher cfm fan doesnt help.. then check to see if its mounted correctly.. that heatsink should have no issues with the 710 unless you have the voltage turned up way to high.. but at 3ghz it should be running the stock voltage..

I'll have to order a fan first, sadly I don't have anymore other than the one I'm using.

Far as I can tell it's mounted correctly, but I'll pull the board to make sure and possibly back off some of the screws a little, I did notice it was making bad contact (just along the edges of the CPU cap), so maybe it needs lapped or something?

Yes, it is at stock voltage, all I did was boost the FSB.
 
That's really not that great of a CPU cooler compared to any of the larger tower coolers. I think that Scythe you linked to would be a much better cooler if it will fit in your case.

My guess would be bad case airflow. If the case isn't getting rid of the heat fast enough the cooler becomes saturated. What case and fans are you using?
 
I think when I get the money (poor *almost* college student :p ) I'll order the Mugen and sell the NT on ebay.

Sadly I have everything stuffed in a Gateway mATX case. I think when I order the Mugen, I'll get a couple 120mm fans and move everything to my P180m.
