Nostalgic Gaming

Waiting on amazon to drop off copy of return fire2 for pc, might look around for the original on 3do which I keep around for Slayer/d&d which I still have two saves for two characters, mostly looking for all the +4 equipment. They don't make games like that anymore. :(
Morrowind comes kind of close.

snes, sega genises + cd, 3do and up. Still got the first final fantasy nes cartidge just need a nes.

If we're talking nostalgia, we're talking the original Zelda and Zelda II. I loved in Zelda II how you'd go to a town, and people would be all "I'm actually a fucking bat" and then they'd fly at your face, but worry not because an old woman will be all "Come. I'll heal that shit". Yes. Needless to say, I bought that madness for my GBA, and now I kick ass all over.

While I'm not quite old enough to have owned an systems from the times of the Odyssey, 2600, Colecovision, etc., (I was born in '86) I did own an SNES (and later an NES) and I still play it. It's a real pain in the ass hooking it up though, due to the old cables it used which are wearing out, so I have an emulator on my computer with all my old 25+ SNES games. When I hook up my SNES the two games I always play until the end are Super Mario World and Aladdin, also a little bit of Earthworm Jim and Mortal Kombat 2. The SNES is still history's best system in my eyes.

ya... I got Ninja Spirit... good stuff... And tha Jag? Playing AvP on it was damn smooth :D

OMFG I love ninja spirit. I used to play that all the time on my cousins Turbo Graphix 16. That was like my favorite game for the longest time. So fun, and so many memories :). I always wanted to play AvP on the Jag. Never had the chance though, no one I knew had a Jag64. I wasn't about to buy one just for AvP..

I'm 1/4th the way through Secret of Mana right now (SNES) and ordering Secret of Evermore and Chrono Trigger when I get around to it. Not to mention a little F-Zero action to see how fast I can complete the very first level.

FF3 is good? I don't remember it (do you get washed down a river at one point in the game?)

Looking (lazily) for a Nintendo, SuperMario 3 and FF2.

Chrono Trigger is awesome. I beat that last year. So much fun, and the story is superb.I'm working my way through FF5 on the SNES. I haven't played it in a few weeks though since i've been busy with work and the woman. But i'll get aroudn to it sooner or later. I'd recommend that game too. It's awesome.

I was playing some Super SF2 the other day. I play my SNES a lot. I'm working on Secret of Mana and next will be FF2, Secret of Evermore, and Chrono Trigger for an estimated 48,532nd time. The SNES is still, in my opinion, the king for fighters and RPGs.

My SNES is the oldest system I still own...that's still in one piece. I took apart my NES and can't remember where I put the parts.

I found a store in Lafayette, IN that has a Sega Master system, a couple Atari 2600s, and an Odyssey II and had games for all of them. I was impressed. Anyone that lives there that wants to check it out should go to CD Land on Teal Rd by the Tippecanoe Mall. There's another one on 52 in West Lafayette, but I've never been there.

I love the CDs they sell in Wal-Mart with the Atari 2600 games on them- brings back childhood.

Does anyone here have a Super Famicom, a Mega Drive, or the one I really wanted: PC Engine with Fighting Street?

heh We made front page ;)

I keep my SNES and a few games in my 30 yr old battered hardside briefcase. I drag it out every once in a while to play Super Metroid or Mega Man X. In fact I dropped about $50 on eBay a while back buying Mega Man X2. Not as good as X. I'm still trying to decide if I want to drop a C-note on Mega Man X3.

I just picked up an xbox 2 months ago. It's my first console since my 2600. :D

Once I discovered emulators for the old games, nostalgia here I come. I found all the 2600 ROMS,over 400 of them, and the total size of the download....1.7Mb. :) Man the hours I wasted on Yars Revenge. And the scary part is it is still fun to play in a simple kinda way.

My wife about flipped when she found out she could play Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers again.

Yeah I do it occasionally, I've been playing Grim Fandango lately. I think I might play through FF7 again, I just have to find it in my pile of old cds hehe :)

Grim Fandango was one of my favorite older games, and i'm replaying it right now as well. I've also been replaying the original Unreal, the original Quake and Hexen, and a few other old time favorites. I guess i'm just wasting my time till the add-on for Doom 3 comes out :)

Heh. Fighting street. I still have that game. I don't know why for pc engine/turbographx cd it was called that then just street fighter. It was fun playing that when everyone was way into Street Fighter 2 (which yes was WAY better, but still much fun)

Still own my turboduo even though for some reason it doesn't turn on :(
I think it's just the AC adapter though (need a 10 volt while universal ones are usually 12)

Oh man that jaguar makes me laugh! I got hooked into buying one of those because it was "64-bit". So it HAD to be better than a PS1 and the same as the N64 right? What a piece of junk! But I still had fun with it.

The game I used to spend the most time playing.....Aces Over the Pacific! Anyone else remember that? or AOE (Aces Over Europe). I played those games every night for hours!! The dogfighting action was soooooo addicting. I wish there was a modern ww2 flight sim that was as easy and fun to play as that one.

My best old school gaming memory.....The first time I played an old Leisure Suit Larry game on my buddy's dad's 386. It asked questions to verify your age before you could play. Like, "who is the current president?". We thought we were real bad-asses for playing that!

Here's another one that used to be a favorite:

Haven't seen anyone with a Saturn. That was a really good system because of very few games such as NiGHTS

I was and still am a huge fan of all the old lucas arts games. Full Throttle, the Monkey Island series, The Dig, Grim Fandango, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle. I loved all of those games. I may have to go on a monkey island binge, soon.

Does anyone still play MegaTF for quakeworld? I was hardcore addicted to that.

OMG.... Now I feel old. I've played (and enjoyed) all of these games, including Decathalon on an old Apple IIe.

Can I get an amen for my all-time favorite PC game, Star Control 2? Or my all-time favorite console game, Phantasy Star (the whole series, for that matter).

While I had atari and NES, I made the jump directly to PC (386! woot!). I played all of the kickass SNES, Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast, etc on friends, but PC games are where my nostalgia truly lies.

Some of my favs:

Prince of Persia 1, 2
All King's Quest
All Quest for Glory (these take the cake for me. I'll NEVER forget them)
Some Space Quest (never really got into them)
Generally anything made by Sierra (may god have mercy on them :( )
Lemmings
Veil of Darkness (look it up, it's awesome)

I had all of the early FPS games as well and I still every one.

How about Star Control 2? One of the best games of all time.

I've been playing Urquan Masters which is a freeware port. It's not too bad considering it's still in alpha. You can find out more about it here:
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

I just bought a new 72-pin connector for my NES. I can't wait to go to my parents and pick it up! :D :D

My mom sold my old Atari 2600 sometime after I got my NES. :(
I loved Pac-Man and Moon Patrol. Not to forget Missile Command!

Sigh

Starflight and it's mystic codewheel... I'm still amazed at how much *content* was generated from that game. All the planets and terrain...

Jet, a true classic flight sim. I remember with great glee taking off from the carrier, immediately pulling up on the flight stick and then ejecting the stick figure back onto the deck.
My sister (her bf more) used to play Starflight, and I was really surprised at its complexity. Then, they introduced me to -- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text game! Those two wasted some months of my life, and it was fun as hell.

Damn...there was a game for the 2600 where each player (it was turn based/hot seat of course) had a space empire. You had to build ships, send off fleets...what was that one??? I'm having a mental block.
That wasn't Master of Orion, was it? I thought it was PC only.

..., sometimes Racing Destruction Set. That game rocked.

By far the best game EVER for the C64. Tried finding it when I was into emulation, and no one had ever even heard of it. All the old 5&1/4 floppys have been long gone for a long time....

My personal old time favorites: X-Wing (PC), Warlords (Atari 2600), Soul Calibur (Dreamcast), TMNT (NES), Duke Nukem 3D (PC), Pong (ColecoVision, first game I ever played back in 1980)

Sooo much time spent on these.

Matt.

The other day I pulled out my old copy of Diablo (the first one ;)) it used to use the CDrom to load the levels from as all the data is kept on the cdrom (the install folder is only like 3mb) so I made an ISO of the cdrom and loaded it with Daemon tools, it was awesome having levels that used to take up to 1 1/2 minutes to load (cd spin up time, access, etc..) now loading in about 3 seconds. Makes a big difference when it has to load from CD whenever you go up or down a level (or go back to town, etc...)

Wow, I feel outdated. I still use the SNES for my main gaming console, though I still have way more games for the NES, so that gets played a lot too. Ice Hockey is fun when you have friends over and stuff. I bought a PSone when the price came down to 40 bucks, but the only games I have for that is Suikoden, FF9 and Chrono Cross. And yes....I still have my Atari too. I am looking forward to buying a PS2 when that falls below 50 bucks, but I will probably still have to wait a while for that to happen. I am always about 3 generations behind as far as gaming consoles go.

No it was long before Master of Orion was even a glimmer in the eye of PC users. We're talking maybe 1983ish when I played it with friends.

Yay, more old folk like me :)

First system was the 2600 and Pac-man. Played it for hours, even though it was just a bad, bad game...

And for those that want to be taken back - a little online Nintendo/Sega goodness

I'm just a little flabberghasted because if developers once put that much effort and from what I could tell, a little bit of love in their products, why aren't they doing it now?

It's because art and design employees, along with the documentation resources, are considered extra money that could be spent paying the people who are working 80 hour weeks to do the modelling, textures, physics, map building, etc.

With games as big as they are now, they have to stretch your $50 pretty far to built that 1.5GB worth of game files. Back in the days of $29.95 buying you 5 floppy diskettes, you got a really nice color manual. Today you get a CD key, game summary, and the default key layout with your 3 CDs.

I have spent considerable time trying to get older MS-DOS games to work properly on my Windows XP PC. I found an easier solution: I bought a new Apple PowerBook G4. All of the games I used to play for hours on the PC five or ten years ago are starting to appear for the Macintosh. Sure, I could spend a tenth the cost and build an older MS-DOS or Windows 95 PC in order to play those games, but would it be as pretty?

;)

Does anyone else take time away from todays games to play some of the older ones?
In all seriousness, I do take time to play some of my old games. I have not thrown out or given away any of my older games, and on quiet weekends, I go through the collection and just pick a random game and sit down for an afternoon playing. Most of my games work with Windows XP but it takes considerable effort, but I find it worthwhile. I was serious regarding the Macintosh, though. An example is Duke Nukem 3D. I have tried to make it work with Windows XP for a long time with very little success. Since the source code was released, there are several versions cropping up for Windows XP, but all seem to have some flaws. I found one for Mac OS X and it works fine. There are many other examples, but I think you get the idea.

Me and my fiance own a GameCube, Playstation 2, Xbox, and an original NES. (I own a Super Nintendo, but it is still at my parents' house, in storage.) When we have guests over, people spend more time playing Super Mario Brothers 3 and some of the other NES games than they spend playing games on the newer consoles. I think a lot of it stems from gameplay: before flashy graphics, you really needed to concentrate on gameplay in order to make a game entertaining. Don't get me wrong: for their time, these games sported some pretty incredible graphics and sound. But a beep was still a beep, and I don't think any of us really thought otherwise. But the games drew us in and made us part of themselves. Today, manufacturers tend to just slap '3D' or 'surround sound' on the package and pray that is helps sales. Does anyone remember the oversaturation of crappy full-motion video games when CD-ROMs first became popular? Most of them were horrible and you knew that the publishers were hoping that 'full-motion video' would sell people on the game.

We still see gems nowadays, but they are very rare. I think that is why a lot of people like to go back to the good ol' days and check out these older games and play them for hours.

^^

Being the Graphics whore that I am, I dont go back and play old games. Im all about the leading edge and playing the newest thing out.

Wait, your idea of Nostalgic gaming is a Playstation? Man, when I feel like doing this I break out my Atari maybe a little Commodore 64 action...
I remember the excitement when I was younger and my parents took me and my sister to the city to an electronics wholesaler my father dealt with. They had just brought in a shipment of Atari 2600s, and I do not think I had even heard of them at the time. Mom and dad bought one, along with a dozen games, and we went home. I was completely amazed, and spent a considerable amount of time on it, along with the rest of the family. It gave us something to do. We didn't have a lot of money, and I was surprised that my parents would make such a purchase, but I think it benefited us a lot as a family. A lot of people accuse video games of making people more anti-social and more prone to violence, etc. but I think it brought our family together.

Ah, Oregon Trail.....still one of my favorite games...

HeeHee, one of my favorite pastimes was to try to get to Oregon in like Late April, Early May- starting out in February, strenuous pace, everyone but me dying from blizzards, cholera, dysentery, typhoid or my personal favorite, drowning while fording every river....:) Shooting 1200 lbs. of meat and only carrying 100 back.... god, what a fun game.

I may have to bust that game out again....Where's my Macintosh or Apple IIGS?! :)
