interesting. so what happened to Southern Islands? these are all Northern islands (NI ..)
 
From the random rumors and bits of information i had read i thought that southern islands were the 6xxx cards and northen islands were the 7xxx cards but i geuss this may mean its the other way around, but of corse nothing can be said for sure yet

Although i do like the idea that if there is somethign to do with the new cards in current drivers that they are going to be launched reasonably soon (i would expect within the coming months maybe)

"Southern Islands

The folks at rage3D went through the driver-files with a fine-tooth comb and found references to some unannounced graphics-cards. Among the codenames are Cayman, Turks, Caicos, Barts, Seymour, Whistler and Blackcomb.

For those who aren't up on their geography, the first four probably refer to the Caribbean nations of the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos and St Barthélemy - St Barts in English - while Seymour could be Seymour Island off of the Antarctic Peninsula. Though Seymour Island is certainly southern, the other three are technically in the Northern Hemisphere.

Northern...Mountains?

Whistler and Blackcomb don't seem to fit with the Island-theme as both are mountains - and popular ski resorts - in the Canadian Rockies. There are also references to Onega, Caspian and Antilles as a part of Turks, Caicos and Cayman families, respectively. While the latter probably relates to the group of Caribbean islands of the same name, the first two are lakes in Eastern Europe and Russia.

AMD has also thrown in a few other words to keep things interesting. Alongside the usual XT and PRO suffixes are a good number of GL versions - including GL PRO and GL XT - as well as Gemini variants. What these mean is unclear, but they could point to mobile, dual-GPU or workstation components.

There obviously isn't a lot of information that we can gather from these codenames, but it does give weight to the rumours of an impending announcement. "

Three of them are!? Lol, I only know Whistler and Blackcomb from the Window beta names :p Didn't know Seymour was in cahoots with them, too.

whats confusing? its desktop and mobile varients.. xt =xx70 pro=xx50, gl would be low end cards eg. x7xx x6xx x5xx etc etc.. the gemini's i have a feeling are the mobile varients and/or maybe onboard video for the bobcat..

but who knows.. wont find out for some time most likely..

true, i suppose when you count all the desktop, intergrated, mobile and fire gl cards of the 5xxx range there is proberley a simmilar ammount..... i think i need more coffee:p
 
I bet AMD engineers are sitting back and laughing their asses off at everyone trying to analyze these codenames and what happened with NI and SI. I wonder if they're bastardous enough to have stuck false product ids in just to confuse us. 10.9 drivers will probably reference GPUs called Hugh Jazz and Mike Rotch

I would hope that they assumed that no one would find them but then again i don't have a clue as to from where within the driver package these were supposed to have come from or how they were found
 
It probably just includes mobile variants of southern isles as well. But that does seem to be an awful lot of names.

pro is usually a basix version
xt is the top of the line version
lp is low profile

as far as gemini goes that is an astrological sign that refers to twins, so that might mean a dual gpu video card. but it also refers to the sun so it could be entirely meaningless.

Cayman has the most variants so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the video card that ATI feels they can sell the most. And that might not necessarily be their top of the line gpu though.
 
Could the gl refer to the fire gl cards? if so then i find it odd as i thought they had their own seperate driver package

"Bart" (after Saint Barthélemy island) is the codename for the performance/upper-mid segment GPU, a successor to the "Juniper" Radeon HD 5700 series. "Cayman" (after Cayman Islands) is the enthusiast GPU, successor to Cypress, and will go into making SKUs that succeed the Radeon HD 5800 series. Finally, the king of the hill is codenamed "Antilles" (after Antilles Islands), it is the dual-GPU SKU that makes use of two Cayman GPUs, successor to the Radeon HD 5970 "Hemlock". AMD partners will be in a position to sell graphics cards based on these by November 2010. The Radeon HD 6970 "Antilles" should be out by December 2010. The lower-half of the family will likely release next year."
