Normal heat range for Q9550?

As the summer months creep near my cpu heat seems to be rising a little by little. I just want to know what the safe ranges on this cpu are. So far the max I've hit is 53/54

that is normal, as the ambient room temp rises the abilty of your heatsink to cool is affected and in general you will see the same rise in cpu temp as you do in room temp.

Talking about core temps as reported by Realtemp/Coretemp/Speedfan and most others:

At around 100C the cpu will think it is getting hot and start to throttle. Most of us like to stay well under that temp at load and 25-20 deg C of margin seems to be the norm. So CPU temps under load in the 75 to 80C area is where most of us stop applying more voltage, or get more fans or whatever and try to avoid going any higher. You almost cannot damage the cpu due to heat, it will just throttle back operating speed and voltage and finally just shutdown.

According to Intel, maximum safe temperature for Q9550 is 71,4C. Keep in mind, that given temperature is called T case temperature, which means temperature on the CPU's heatspreader. Temperature monitoring utilities (like RealTemp for example) report T junction temperature (temperature of each core individually) which is always 10 - 15c higher than T case temperatures, so Q9550's maximum allowable temperature is around ~85 - 90C, meanwhile 54 degrees Celsius is perfectly safe.

And in the case of Intel's Tcase rating, it's measured dead-center on the processor's heat spreader.

When I had my Q6600 I never let it rise past 80c. You can set thermal preferences in the BIOS.

Most of what you say is correct, but you are making a big error in assuming the thermal spec is the maximum safe temperature. That is not true. The thermal spec is basically the maximum Tcase value the CPU will run at under normal operating conditions while the stock heatsink and fan are being used. It has nothing to do with safe limits. In fact, it is impossible to run an Intel CPU so that its temperature will exceed safe limits, since it will shut itself down long before that point is reached.

my Q9550 is running at 3.4ghz 55C max on stock cooling, I'll be slapping on a CM Hyper 212 plus in a couple days to get ready for the hot weather.
