I am trying to build something that will last for awhile.
This is what i'm thinking of now. Trying to build something tried and true so to speak.

Since you're not overclocking at all, zero reason for you to get that RAM. I recommend this set instead to save $15 and the same performance:
$75 - G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333 RAM

You can save $28 and get a significantly better quality PSU and faster hard drive:
$145 - Corsair 650TX 650W PSU + Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive Combo

Case wise, that Antec 300 case is not worth $63 shipped. You can get a significantly roomier, better cooling, and better overall case for $7 more:
$70 - Cooler Master CM690 II Basic ATX Case

$245 for a GTX 460 is too much IMO considering that for $10 more you can get the slightly faster HD 5850:
$255 - XFX HD-585X-ZAFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB PCI-E Video Card

Thanks for the reply. Are you saying the card is too much money or the card is more than I need? Anyone else have any ideas?

Actually, the card that you originally chose costs too much money, especially since it is priced way too close to a card that's in the next-higher performance class for its own good. Simply put, the $245 GTX 460 is a poor value at this point. (In fact, I checked the prices of other 1GB GTX 460s at Newegg, and found none of them that are priced any less than $230 shipped.) There is no reason to choose an NVIDIA card at that $250-ish price point unless you're using or planning to use Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 or the forthcoming Sony Vegas 10 Pro (in which case an NVIDIA GPU is required for GPU-accelerated editing and/or rendering - with most video formats in Adobe or with Sony AVC encodes in Vegas 10).

And the reason why we changed the HDD and PSU is that the ones that you originally chose have a relatively poor performance-to-price ratio. The WD1001FALS, for example, still has a relatively slow sequential (physical) transfer speed compared to 1TB hard drives of newer platter designs (in fact, most samples of the WD1001FALS that ship even today still use three 334GB platters while the Samsung HD103SJ uses two 500GB platters, which directly impact the physical transfer speed). And the EarthWatts EA750 is just a poor value, especially since it provides barely more capacity on the +12V rail (56A) than the average 650W PSU.

Well as E4g1e somewhat noted, it's actually both: It costs way too much and it's way more than what you need. The HD 5770 I chose is well priced and well suited to your small resolution.

thanks for all the help, but I have had some isues trying to get this order through newegg. they shipped me the wrong items, so I called them and they said they would be shipping out the correct items over night. That didn't happen either. So I canceled the items i did not get, which leaves me at this point.I have a case.COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case and hard drive SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive.

You just had some very very bad luck.

Can you narrow down when exactly you're gonna get that 24" monitor?
Can you decide whether or not you're gonna OC?

I wil be getting the monitor for christmas. and I do want the option of overclocking.

$340 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Asus P7P55D EVO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Motherboard

$100 - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM

thanks for the quick repley. one thing i forgot to mention is that i want to try a tv tuner card. wil this change any thing?

eh, i bought the SC EE card from evga for 249, came with free copy of metro 2033 so i feel like i got a good deal. i wouldnt say that card is overpriced, especially since i havent heard good things about the xfx 5850s, i also would not rely on a MIR for that low price. i have personally been screwed and known a lot of people that have been screwed by MIRs. in my opinion that is still a $280 card, which paints a different picture.

At the time of posting, the XFX HD 5850 was $255 shipped without a rebate factored in. Unfortunately that was a sales price. In fact, if you've spend a resonable amount of time in this subforum, you can see that we rarely factor in MIR for the reasons you mentioned: They're not guaranteed discounts.

While $250 for a GTX 460 1GB + game is a decent deal, the GTX 460 1GB that the OP chose only comes with a SC2 trial coupon. Nothing else. As such, it's basically just $250 for the card itself. At least with your situation, you got the card + a game.

Thanks for all the help Danny
Is there a reason for the psu you chose this time over the one you picked in the first build. I found this combo with the Corsair 650TX 650W .

$87.00 G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Ripjaws Series 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$299.00 Corsair 650TX 650W PSU+Gigabyte GV-N460OC-1GI GeForce GTX 460 1GB PCI-E Video Card

Didn't see that Corsair combo deal :) So go for that instead. Saves you $20 over my setup.

So, I got all the parts from newegg and they were the right parts and on time. 3rd time is a charm I guess.Got it all put together and it runs like a champ. It had been 8 years since I built the last pc and wow this build was way over due!!

Can't get any work done for playing the hell out of bad company 2::D

thanks once again for the help.
