Noob question about folding

I just downloaded F@[H] the other day and keep it running 24x7, even when I'm using my computer, since I can't tell a difference.

I was thinking though, since it uses so few resources running in the background, why isn't there a way for it to use like 100% of the CPU when I'm sleeping or at work?

If you just installed it it does. When you do other things it dynamically changes usage so not affect your other work.

so it does work faster when I'm not using the computer?

You can notice a difference when when Ctrl+Alt+Del for the Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. CPU Usage will show up as 100% unless you have HT enabled where it shows up as 50%.

Yep, that's how it works unless you explicitly tell it to run with a higher priority where it uses all more the CPU at all times, or if you've set it to use less than 100% of the idle time.

well it works good, I can't even tell it's running
no slowdown whatsoever

is there like a benchmark you can test your CPU with to see how fast it is at 100%?
does it run better on AMD or Intel chips?

The thing about F@H is that the client is just a gateway to each different proteins. If you look in your F@H directory, you will find additional .exe files such as FAHcore_96.exe, FAHcore_82.exe, etc. Each core corresponds to a different type of WU, there are gromacs, tinkers, QMD's, and ambers. Each core had different running properties per CPU. Tinkers for instance are crap on Intel chips, while AMD's slice through them in half the time. QMD's on the other hand don't yet even exist for AMD architecture.

The best is when you have 10 computers that you dont use, that all have f@h on them ;)

Yup, what ^^^ he said!

In folding, more is better!! And there are different terms to be used -- small garden, garden, small farm, farm. Check out the faq's at the top of the page where there is legend of definitions that we use.

Glad to have you on board. Now remember, borg, borg, borg!!!

So I guess my question is: What is the cut-off between calling your collection of boxen a farm instead of a garden?

I think this is one of the reasons I'm somewhat glad my systems are at a friend's house. If they are there and I'm home, nothing but folding is being done on them. I do miss my little guys, though. One of these days I will have cable and I will get my systems moved over.

I have three systems and a couple of borgs and all I call what I have are some potted plants. It just doesn't feel right to call it a garden. ;)

<singing> "Ol' McHito had a farm ei ei ooooo, and on this farm he had some b0xen ei ei oooo"</singing>

Nope doesn't work... :(

*ears bleeding* No more singing!! no more!! the dophins are beaching themselves!! Have mercy!!!! :D

I have 4 computers at home, finally got the dually up and running last night.... I'd call my collection of PCs a garden, made up of potted plants... and oddly enough, surrounded by actual potted plants LOL...

And yes, the more the better!

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Well, I'd classify it like this:
Small garden: 3-4
Garden: 7-8
Small farm: 10-15
Fa[H]rm: 20+
Of course, this is for machines you own; for b0rgs, it's like this:
b0rg: 1
b0rgorific: 3-5
b0rgtastic: 8-10
b0rg-0-r4m4: 20+
That's my scale, anyways. Feel free to adopt it, or mock me for suggesting it... :p

This does bring up a further question though... we've got gardens and farms... what about greenhouses? You know warm rooms that have nothing but a moderate amount of boxen in them like a training lab??? Just kind of dawned on me. :D (and quit making fun of my singing! :p )

I like to think of myself as a gentleman farmer. Of course, the real problem is that I can't resist a nice farm animal.

I'd tend to agree with that number system. I'd have to classify my set-up as 2 garden plots (2 x 5 boxen) and a kitchen plant (laptop next to the kitchen).

In any other context that would just be sick...

what about asses? we have some of those around as well ;)

I like to consider mine a small farm... 10 computers, 11 cpu's and always looking to assimilate more..

my girlfriend's neighbor has a llama... and a few donkeys... I can hook you up with them if you like, Hito :D

Would that be considered a borg opportunity?

not in my book! lol

I'm all for monogamous borging (and my girlfriend's laptop and desktop would be folding if they could get something other than dialup)... Do you think I'm KS or something?? LOL

Hmmm I know you are helping the enemy.

Therfore.. no boring for u!

BakedOn will still find a way to whip ur llama..

Is it Winamp that use to/still has that mp3 that says "Winamp... It really whips/kicks the llama's ass"??

What about 5-7

That would be negative two.

Basically, you round to the nearest, and if you have momentum one way or the other you can take that into account. So if you have 6, and you add one every three months, that counts as a Garden. But if you have 6, and your SO's nagging you to throw out "all that computer crap", then it's a small garden.

I dunno, just pick one close to you and stick to it. Then get more b0xen!!!! :D
