Hello Guys,
Im just after some peoples opinions of this.
Some guy is offering me a E6600 Engineering sample for US$340,
heres the cpuz screenie

What do you guys rekon, in your professional opinions :D ? It's a pretty early stepping and revision would you expect any defects with it and also im thinking its pretty old, like almost 1 year old (does anyone know what the revision versions change)? Should I save my money and try to get a B2 rev cpu for cheaper etc?
He says it runs around 35-45 C , what are the pros and cons of a ES
-thanks in advance
-lantal :)

looks like its one of the chips with unlocked multipliers.
6-40!

So you could overclock it very easily by just multipulating the mulitplier. This keeps all of the other components in your system cooler & stable. (northbridge, ram, etc.)

Thanks for the info mate,
Yea I do believe it has unlocked multi, but the revision number is so low!!! Am I gonna have compatability problems down the track, and what has been updated since revision A1 through to B2
Do you rekon its a good deal?

its an e6600 with an unlocked Multi jump on it

Thanks for you opinion mate :D so you wouldnt be worried about the earlier version of it?

I would be. Some earlier ES chips were of an earlier revision from before they did a respin to fix a few major bugs.

Also, the older revisions didn't overclock that well. It was Stepping 4's that overclocked well, and then retails.

\Ahh I see,
thats the kinda inside information I was after
so basically the the pros are low temp and unlocked multi
cons are no warranty possible bugs possible poor OC
would a B1 or B2 be more to my liking.

B2 is retail. B1 is still engineering sample. If you could ask the seller if he could tell you the week of it, or I guess just everyone on the ihs itself.

I just got an ES e6400. It's F5 B1 week 17. Multi doesn't scale like that (only normal 6-8 it seems). But with mine I'm seeing 8x450=3600 currently.

Guess that is an early revision so it'd be possibly hit or miss.

Not really worth the price for that IMO unless you want to have your own INTEL CONFIDENTIAL. Then what the hell :) Even if it doesn't overclock well, you'd probably still see x6800 level without a sweat by just changing the multi

Dude, you're asking on the supposedly [H]ardest forum there is. You should expect to take the biggest risk in order to have the best stuff.

If you can afford losing the money, do it. If you can't afford throwing $340 down the drain, don't do it.

I think that pretty much sums it all up.

It's not really down the drain. I suppose even if it's a dud, you could resell it around $300 just based off the ES name.

But stallion has 2 more e6600, which may very likely be es if you're interested. Going to sell out today I'd imagine

edit: the stallion es's tend to be the preproduction ones that more people got ahold of, namely f5 b1 models that are in the late teens for week.

Just make sure intel doesnt find out, they have every right to force you by law to give it back to them, and your out of $340. Not really worth it imo, I'd buy a retail.

$340 U.S. with that kind of money you can get a retail chip and still have some cash left over for a good aftermarket cooler. IMO it's not worth the risk just to get an unlocked multiplier when you're going to hit the same clocks with good cooling on a retail chip.

qft.

Also, it doesn't even seem that all ES now are unlocked 6-40. Most ES I've seen except for one still has just the normal range

OK guys just an update
thanks for all your opinions
due to your thoughts I held off and bought a B2 stepping Engineering Sample for about $50cheaper on my local forums in Australia.
Very happy :D
