Well, ladies and gentlemen, it's been a long road getting here, but I finally have my SR-2 up and running. Thanks to the help of many [H] members, as well as funding from my summer job, my new Folding@Home beast is complete!

Specifications:

2x Intel Xeon E5530 processors
2x2GB Corsair XMS DDR3-1600
2x Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU coolers
1x 640GB WD Black HDD
1x Seventeam 850 Watt PSU

Setup:

Basically, the SR-2, while not for novices, was fairly easy to set up compared to some server-style boards I have worked with in the past.

Since I was using two ES E5530 Xeons, I had to flash the BIOS of the SR-2 with a modified one in order to get it to post, as these chips are not on the HCL for this board.

As such, I removed the Xeon-style CPU backplates and attached the traditional Core i7 style ones included in the SR-2 box. This step required a torx screwdriver/allen key and is easily overlooked.

After that, I installed the E5620 and one of my CPU coolers, booted the machine, installed windows, ran the driver installation from CD, and then flashed the modified BIOS using the included command-line tool.

After that, I removed the E5620, installed both E5530s, and booted back into windows.

I did not have time to do much for an overclock yet, so I just cranked up my BCLK to 180 and called it quits for today. That gives me a processor speed of 3.2 GHz for the moment.

I have started running -bigadv and am pulling around 40K PPD as seen below. I hope this will be significantly improved with higher clocks.

Tomorrow my Mountain Mods motherboard tray should arrive, providing my SR-2 with a slightly more secure home.

Future plans:

As suggested by Musky, I will be purchasing a Core i7 970 in the near future and water-cooling it in my Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R-SLI motherboard under water cooling. This should net me another significant chunk of PPD.

I will overclock the SR-2 some more later, but please note that I am hitting upper 60s at my current frequency.

Wow, awesome setup... However.... If you dont plan on selling this setup, which im thinking your not..... you posted it in the wrong sub-forum! :) Much-Love to you bro!

Talk about deja vu....that is the twin to mine, right down to the HSFs. It also is only doing 7K ppd less than mine on a P2684, and is probably drawing 100W less. Nice build!

For the braindead moment of the day, I didn't realize that the Xeon backplates came off. My HSFs are rigged on the board using the Xeon backplates, which makes them a real pain in the butt to get on and off.

You posted no price so I'm calling dibs if it's free...j/k ;)
Looks very nice as do all SR-2's

Please forgive me mods; I was browsing [H] in waay too many tabs. Please move this to the main DC forum.

I will get power consumption figures later; right now my only kill-a-watt is connected to that whole rack.

I bought those coolers from the CM store because they were dirt cheap at $20 a pop. Unfortunately one of them was missing an LGA 1366 bracket so I just emailed them about it.

Huge congrats on your successful build and major kudos for a fantastic choice in hardware.

The Cogage TRUE Spirits bolt right on to the X-shaped backplates that were already installed. The TRUEs on my i7s install the same way. Are you guys installing the rectangular backplates that come in the box?

Congrats man!

Which work unit are you crunching at the moment? I guess I thought that you would be doing way more than 40k ppd since you have 8 physical cores running at 3.2ghz.

And T-Shirts....

Congrats mate, a world of multi-core goodness awaits you!

yes do tell

i noticed you and a few other's with sr-2's have the front cpu blowing warmed air over the back one. is there not room to turn the front heat sink? And if the case has both top and back exhaust fans i would think it would work just a little better. congrates on another kickass rig for the horde!

In theory it might work better. It depends how one manages airflow and positioning is everything. With my Skulltrail, I arranged a single air flow direction: dual front case fans > dual ducts > push fan1 > CPU HS1 > pull fan1 > passive NB HS > push fan 2 > CPU HS2 > pull fan 2 > dual exhaust case fans. However, this is the only system I arranged a single flow. Most of my other systems have two air flows (front and back exhaust) because their arrangements and positioning of components is different. Each system has different requirements and possibly different arrangements need to be employed.

I'm getting about 1-2C difference tops between the CPUs, so for my setup it isn't a big deal. My SR-2 is working on P2686 at the moment.

The video card kind of gets in the way if you do a bottom to top flow. I may switch mine around to use the bottom PCI-e slot the next time I tear it down, but I really don't see a huge difference between the two processor's temps with one HSF feeding the other like Noble's.

Nothing like waking up and checking [H] to see some nice Harware Pron :)

That's what I do every morning as well, nitrobass24. My mountain mods motherboard tray arrived today; I will mount the SR-2 to it later once its first work unit is in.

And another 5530 setup, looks like we started a trend Kendrak

Glad to have another beast on board, were really bringing out the big guns now.

And Tshirts? I like that idea lol..

O yea, and my TS's mounted on the default plate, no need to switch

Lucky you. I was tearing the house upside down on a Friday night looking for a 4mm allen key. Nothing worse than a build stopped dead for lack of tools. Thankfully I have great neighbours.

Serious overclocking attempts will be made this weekend. If temps get too bad I might just go out and get some more secondhand watercooling supplies and WC the CPUs on the this thing.... Maybe I'll mount two 360mm rads directly to the rack.

That would be hot...or cool

My heat sinks blow opposite from each other. They have fast fans on them, and temps have stayed under 70.

I'm using the included back ate with ny hyper 212 and the evga 1366 back plate with my true. I was halted by lack if tools for a day or two. That sucked.

Damn, I must stop reading these SR-2 threads I MUST

Haha, I'm in the same boat as you.... Its sooo tempting... my biggest problem though is if I were ever to do it, I would have a hard time holding back and not getting the best of the best processors...

Very nice setup. I'm proud to have helped fund it with the Droid Eris I bought from you in FS/T. I can only hope to have a setup so [H] some day.

Tomorrow I will post some updates and new pics. Thanks for the support everyone!

I was for a bit, but one of my H50s seems to be running at 1/2 speed.

Make sure it's plugged into a fan header that isn't being throttled down with CPU/NB temp. You want it running flat out at 100%. :D

I went though all of that... there is a thread floating around about it....

Hehe, a bit before your time ;)
