I moved from the US to Italy back in May. I'm just not getting around to hooking up my media server and found out that it won't boot.

The PSU is dual voltage, the CPU is an AM2, the motherboard is an ECS KA3 MVP, nothing physically has changed about the server from when it was put in a box in May to ship here.

I plug it in, turn on the power, all the fans and drives spin up, the video card fan spins up.

The onboard NIC's don't light up, the CD drive light never goes off (is usually off after POSTing), there are no beeps.

I removed all expansion cards, memory and video card. Booted with same results. One stick of ram, nothing else, same results.

This thing has a massive heatsink. Did it crush the CPU in transit? Would a dead CMOS battery cause this?
 
Hit up the stickied "Basic Troubleshooting Guide" on what to do when the PC does not post. Report back when you've gone all through those steps.
 
Since the computer won't boot with all the stuff removed, and I already cleared CMOS, I think I have all the guide covered.

Anyone know if a heatsink that is properly mounted can break a CPU? Can a bad CMOS battery cause a PC not to POST?

I can't really test anything out by swapping parts around because I don't have access to spare parts.

Dead CMOS battery is a highly unlikely culprit to a non-POSTing system. The battery is only there to keep your CMOS settings. If those are reset, then the default settings should still pass POST.

No beeps without a vidcard nor RAM? Did you try re-seating the CPU?

Did you ship the machine with a massive heatsink installed? If so, it may have damaged the motherboard.
 
No beeping with video card and ram removed.

I haven't tried reseating CPU because it will take two weeks to get thermal paste here.

I shipped it with our household goods (not USPS, UPS, etc.).
 
Sounds like a dead PSU. Since you moved to Italy...make sure that the PSU is set back to 200V instead of the 100V they use over here in the US...should be a switch on the back

I just had a bad PSU. Would not produce a monitor signal or beeps. Replaced the PSU and my system is fine

I would expect not to see a switch on the back on a modern power supply. The supply should specify an acceptable input voltage from ~100V to ~250V.
 
Eh just in case. My current PSU doesn't, but theBFG 650watt SLI PSU did and it's not that old
 
It is a 110-240v PSU. No switch. Most stuff now a days is auto switching.

Can it be a bad power supply if it's capable of spinning up about 8TB of disks, a video card and 5 120MM fans?
 
heh, simple test, unplug all the unnecessary stuff (everything except cpu/mobo).

Re-seating the cpu without replacing the TIM is possible, just don't run it long without replacing it. If it works, then you're good to go and just need to wait for new TIM. If not, then you'll have to wait for replacement parts anyhow, so might as well order TIM now. :rolleyes:
 
i would remove / reseat the cooler

I just had a nopost after swapping stuff about...turns out wasn't paying attention and had hsf mounted incorrectly (had cut out on one side of bottom to clear caps..i had it wrong way..so it was shorting out)

fixed that posted fine.
