No Post, No Boot

My rig is in my sig. It's the I7 build.

Just moved out of state. So I removed the vid card and CPU for the move.
Put everything back together and try to boot up. Nothing.

I'm getting power, all fans are spinning including the vid card.
Odd thing is I'm not getting ANY beeps at all.
The onboard POST code reads FF.
Which according to my X58 manual means: Boot

So, anyone know what might be wrong here? I tried reseating the vid card cables and double checked that all connections were solid.

The only other difference is I'm using a different monitor, but I don't see how that would cause a problem with booting.

this is probably obvious, but you did re-seat and apply thermal paste to the cpu?

most boards ive worked with lately dont have speakers built in any more so you wouldn't get beeps most likely anyhow unless you were getting a post beep before of course that is...

Yup, I cleaned off the old thermal paste, reseated the CPU, applied new paste and tightened down my HSF.

What gets me is the post code on the board says boot, but it's not

does the board have onboard video to test with? do you have another card in case the card got a static charge or something?

I really have no idea, just trying to throw out some options you may or may not have thought of.

I don't have any spare vid cards, nor do I have onboard video (I don't think, will check that).

I was quite careful handling the card. I made sure to ground myself before handling it, and transported it in it's original packaging, including the static proof bag.
Thanks for throwing ideas at me, I appreciate your effort to help. I'm pretty stumped here.

how about your psu connections. could one have come loose for your board not supplying enough power to the cpu?

The board does have a speaker on it. And I'm 99.99% sure that it used to give me a single beep when I booted.

I checked all the PSU connections, everything is snug.

I will dig out my windows CD and see if I can boot to that.

Honestly, I don't even know if I had my DVD drive set as an alternate boot. So I can't even tell if that's doing any good.

I put the dvd in and powered on, but still no display or POST beep

Do the usual, pull the battery, and reset the bios.....just an idea. And, reset RAM again...or, start w/ 1 stick of ram (especially important if your ram voltage is higher than 1.8, or whatever the base standard is for DDR2 or DDR3)

I had an older motherboard recently who gave me the FF code, which means boot on it as well but it was actually dead.

This isn't an older board. It's only a year old.
I'm not saying the board didn't get damaged somehow during transport, but it sure as hell isn't old.

Anymore ideas?

My point was more related to the similar onboard post code.
I did all the things you have done including, 3 different video cards, 2 different CPUs, 6 different sticks of RAM (individually) and 4 power supplies.

SO how do I determine if the board is dead when I don't have any spare parts to swap out?

If the board was dead would the CMOS reset be working? Because it seems like it is. If I power down, then hold the reset switch, as soon as I let go the system powers on.

ok, when you hit the power button dose it start at 00 and scroll up to FF, or dose it just blip straight to FF?

if it is going straight to FF. the board might be dead. i have had them come back, and i have had them never come back. things to try.

do a bare board boot. remove all drives (unplug the cables board side) take out your vid card and ram (and any other cards... sound, raid, tv tuners etc.) just the cpu and and a power supply. hit the power button.. this should give you a beep code no matter what and stop the bios read out before it gets to FF. It SHOULD read no ram. but some boards are weird and it may say no vid card... if it dose, good. if it doesn't, the only thing left to do is change out the bios battery. If you still have no luck, its a dead board.

if the board give beep codes, add in 1 stick of ram, and try again. it should give no video.

add a video card...

etc.

just read your edit... sounds like a dead cmos battery if you are getting it to boot like that, it would be the cheapest/quickest fix right now... if I'm mistaken and your just saying it turns on but no boot... then refer to my above post

Thanks Thor. It's still not booting when I reset the CMOS, it just powers up when I let go of the reset switch.

I'm pretty sure it goes straight to FF as soon as I power on. I will double check that.

I will try the barebones boot and get back to you guys.

Thanks a ton folks, I don't know what I'd do without this forum.
Cheers.

Ok I did a barebones boot.
Got no beeps, and it went straight to FF error code.
Tomorrow I will go get a new CMOS battery and pray that's the problem. I really can't afford a new motherboard right now.

I did have the tower sitting overnight in pretty cold weather, about 15 degrees or so. Would that kill the board? Kill the battery?

Ok, I swapped in a new CMOS battery this morning.

It still goes straight to FF without any other error codes showing and with no beeps at all.
Is it safe to assume that the mobo is dead? I'm going to go pick up a new one today, but it's like an hour and half drive to the Micro Center, so I wanted to try and rule out any other possibilities before I drove all the way down there and back.

Considering that you have no spare parts to test with or another PC to try those parts in, then yeah, your next course of action is to try a different motherboard.

Three hour car ride?

I'm not very good with long rides anymore but for a MB replacement....when are we leaving? :D

They will also take a good 2 to 3 days before I can get the part.
I need to get this thing back up and running asap so I can find a job.

I'm worried that it could be the CPU and not the board. But I suppose there isn't really any way for me to tell without a new CPU or Mobo to test.

You ain't left yet? Get moving! :D

Bad CPUs are pretty rare....bad MBs aren't.

It sounds to me like you have not tried reseating the memory (only the processor and video card). Do that before you try replacing anything.
