No PC Dead Space 2

same here. It sucks, but oh well... their loss

Exactly. Some people won't see it that way, but when the last big publisher stops making PC games, all the underground ones will come up and take their money. There will be an awkward time in between maybe, but once all these indie devs take over, start making money because everyone else went console, the big houses will come crawling back like it was their idea...

At least that's what I like to think will happen. Of course it's anyone's guess. I'd almost rather that happened. It's kind of going on to a small degree already, but I'd like to see more of it.

As long as the PC is still viable as a tool for any purpose, there will be someone making games for it. Maybe just not on a huge scale. That may just turn out for the better.

DS was fantastic - great atmosphere and it really did have a lot of startle me moments. I really enjoyed it after I fixed the mouse control issue. Disappointed DS2 will not be on PC...I mean really does it take much to release a PC version? They develop it on a PC for goodness sake - if you don't want to spend any money hyping the PC version just make it a Steam exclusive - no packaging or other expense involved.

I agree. Even with the unfortunate high levels of piracy on the PC, they should still be able to make a profit on the PC and with not too much effort, especially given a PC's architecture and even if releasing it only digitally. I'm sure there's some other studio that wouldn't mind porting the game to the PC, right?

I remember a few years ago how many devs released multiplatform games late on the PS3 or not at all due to its low install base and different architecture from the 360. Even then, the PS3 version was oftentimes inferior to the 360 counterpart. Now that its install base has caught up, it gets a lot more attention and love from the developers, gets many more games, many games are now equal parity on the PS3 and 360.

I just wish the same would happen to the PC.

I would tend to agree. I think the only reason more don't do this is that they still have to do quite a bit of compatibility testing on the PC end of things. I see this being much less of a problem these days though. There are only two proper manufacturers of modern graphics chips, two CPU makers, and the chipset is pretty transparent. For a limited release like you describe, why not just only support NV and ATI cards of a certain generation and up. Cut off support at whatever DX level they're using, and call it good. There really is no need for a game of this style to cater to Intel graphics, single core CPUs, etc. etc. Some games yes, but limiting to the tech that's as good or better than any console is a quick, simplified way to get a game out. Then if they're going to be cool about it, spend a little extra time on the UI, and making sure plenty of graphic options are exposed. I would think it would at least make some degree of profit going this route.

Even the consoles are getting this issue with some models having smaller hard drives than others and with the Xbox 360, some not even having a hard drive whereas all PS3s do have one. This is one reason why many PS3 games have mandatory installs like PC games whereas almost all 360 games do not.

The only thing good about the PC version was the production values. Everything else about the game was fucked.

Personally I'm glad another piece of copycat shovelware from Visceral Games stays off the PC, really. The fact Dead Space is unplayable without tinkering with nvidia's display drivers and the game was never patched clearly shows the people currently at Visceral aren't capable of developing for the platform anyway.

You guys for realz?

After they milk the console crowd they usuall "announce" the pc version 6 months later.

Didn't the same happen with DS1?

Ahh ok I knew I might be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time a PC version was just "late to the plate".

I still don't think the sky is falling, but I guess time will tell.

well being that pc sales were so low on the first one its very unlikely they fool with porting Dead Space 2 over to the pc even at a later date.

Deadspace was a great game, lots of fun and scary sometimes. But I swear, there was ONE fucking room in that game that was straight out of hell. I mean, I had no ammo, no health, and was stuck at a save point. So I had to do insane maneuvers around the room, while dodging attacks from a ridiculous onslaught of enemies, all popping up and attacking me ferociously. Anyway, I did finally make it through the room somehow, after dying at least 15 times. Anyone remember that room?

I think this sucks pretty bad. I loved the game and have it as one of my alltime favorites. I hate that theyre not going to have the sequel for PC. Ive been a PC Gamer since my Commodore 64 back in 1983 and althought I did do PS1 and Xbox1, I have no desire to buy a console - especially with them at $300+. I could buy a 5850 for that and finally be able to play Crysis on Very High graphics! ;)

I'm not surprised by this. The original Dead Space sold under 40,000 retail copies for the PC. Unless the digital download sales were out of this world this would be a complete flop. Why would they port it only to lose money?

It was a good game too, I was really looking forward to the second one.

O well.......

Yeah thats not that great sales record, but how much does it cost to port the game over to PC? If it sold 40,000 copies retail, thats still around $1.5 million. Cant imagine it would cost near half that to port it. I have no clue though whats involved in porting console games over to PC so I could be totally talking out of my ass.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same way too. Even if many more copies sell on the console than the PC, if the PC version is simple and easy to make, you still make some extra money so what is the fuss?

Even when the PS2 and PS3 are difficult to code for some developers compared to the Xbox 360, they still do it because now they have a large enough userbase and potential customers not to ignore.

Its a shame the PC isn't in that position but I hope that porting games to it isn't as hard an affair as porting from the 360 to PS3 and so it would still be worth their while?

Jeez, all this bad news for PC, why can't consoles get any bad news? :(

The funny thing is that's why many console gamers feel the opposite way. Why buy an expensive video card upgrade when I can buy a whole 'nother console? ;)
It is a good feeling to be able to upgrade your PC down the road and then play games at higher settings you couldn't do before. :)
I have an Xbox 360 but only bought it for GTA4, if only I knew it was coming to the PC. Now its only used by my dad as a DVD player. :D
I'd like these games to come to PC for being able to play them at higher settings, with mods perhaps, on a laptop when I get one, etc. :)

Yeah this is really too bad... I hated trying to play it on my Xbox 360 because the gun movement felt so sluggish and weird at 30 FPS. I sold the copy I had and got it for the PC and used my Xbox 360 controller to play, and loved it. Playing this game at 60 FPS made a WORLD of difference to me. Sadly I won't be able to enjoy the next one if that isn't possible.

I'd like to do that with many games such as Gears of War 2 if it ever comes to PC. I'd still feel better if it was delayed rather than never coming to PC. :(

I liked DS but the controls sucked rotten. After a while you get used to them but they still sucked. I was hoping DS2 would maintain the quality aspect of DS but fix the control. Of course what I hear is that DS2 fucked up the quality aspect (atmosphere) and probably would not address the issues with controls so perhaps it isn't such a big deal that they dropped the PC.

The one thing that grabs me is that publishers are loosing money right and left. They blame piracy but I suspect it is poor corporate decisions (including treatment of pc platform, excess GSM overhead (i.e, ceo salary) as well as unwisely usage of advertising budget).

Look at atari which cripples their premium games (nwn series; refuses to release an add on for TWO years over drm issues, releases a bunch of trash outside of NWN, provides no support/updates on patches for MONTHS (KB-TL) and then blames piracy for their woes.

Then there is UBI-SOFT with their new anal DRM, release total trash like farcry-2 and also screams that piracy is the source of all evil.

Lets not talk about EA.
--
Anyways I think the obvious path is that independent publishers will continue to do well and corporate entities will continue to do their best to kill PC gaming while they bleed to death.

There are still excellent games out there without the DRM bullshit.

Some of you are taking this to personal. 'They' aren't out to get you. The first one sold poorly on the PC, what leads any of you to believe the 2'nd one will do any better. The world is trying to come back from this recession, companies (not just the gaming industry) are slimming up, cutting costs, and trying to push product they know they can make money on. DS sold well on console, so logically it makes sense to release the 2nd one there.

For some of you in here that preach "PC only, the day PC gaming dies I'll quit gaming" I pity you. Uncharted 2 knocked my socks off and was by far the most thrilling experience I received from playing a game in a long time. Games don't need to be in a billionXtrillion resolution to be FUN. When you people realize this, you'll understand how many great, FUN games you've missed out by sticking to this 'PC Only' way. By no means am I saying give up on PC gaming, but to only game on a PC is limiting.

The controls for DS1 PC were so awful, I think we're better off without DS2 PC.
But that's just my opinion.

if you set them up properly they worked just fine. game vsync off, control panel vsync on and there you go. yes the mouse movement tightens up in aim mode but its supposed too. this isnt a run and gun game.

That's too bad. Hopefully they change their minds, as it seems sometimes they do.I loved Deadspace and bought a copy as a gift for a buddy and one for myself soon after. We both thought it was good and scary as hell. EA probably won't make it because if it doesn't make an absurd amount of money they usually scrap it.

Me too. Slightly before even, but I officially started with the 64. Still play C64 games fairly frequently actually.

Agreed completely. Once tweaked a bit they work great. This REALLY bothers me when people complain about the controls. Ok, granted, if you buy something, it should work out of the box. BUT.... The people complaining often are people claiming to be hardcore PC gamers. What percentage of PC games have ever worked 100% perfectly out of the box? That's part of playing on a PC. I'm for improvements in this area, but to call yourself a PC gamer, and then complain that you had to force VSync in a driver control panel to make the game run right is just beyond me. "Oh no, I had to click an extra three times, set a profile for one game, and then turn off VSync in the game one time!!! EEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!"

I'm sorry, but whether it should just work or not is pretty much beside the point. If there is a way to get it to work, then do it, and enjoy a really good f'ing game damnit! I don't usually rant like this, but some people are seriously missing out because of a 5 step process that only has to be performed once. ACK!

Correct me if i'm wrong but are most of these games developed on a PC development enviroment then ported to consoles? Is it that much trouble to have it on all three platforms? Any developers here that could chime in?

I wish to know the same as well. Despite all the piracy and bad press PC gamers get, porting it to the PC should still get them some profit if porting it truly is a easy job. Developers before were reluctant to port from 360 to PS3 when the PS3 had a low number of users but that has changed and they put up with its difficult architecture for the userbase.

At least the PC should be easy to develop for. Why not develop games on Windows and then port down to the consoles so everyone is happy?

Maybe they want us to buy consoles instead?
:(

I am sure that is one of their reasons. MS would LOVE for all PC gamers to trash their gaming computers and buy an Xbox 360 where we are limited to their closed system, paying $100 for a wireless adapter and 60gb hard drive, $50 each year for online play, no mods so we have to pay for DLC instead (I'd like mods and DLC, not just DLC) etc. It is their wet freaking dream!:mad::mad:

If they don't want my money then it's their loss. There are lots of other games to play on the PC.

They didn't flat-out deny it though; sounds to me like they're keeping their options open so they can release a PC version after they milk the console versions.

Right, it could be a delayed release after the console versions, I don't believe its been entirely canned.

Honestly, im playing and enjoying gaming more on my 360 on my 50" Sony TV with a diet soda next to me, my cat sitting in my lap and my girlfriend in the next chair reading. I'm finding it alot more relaxing and enjoyable then me sitting alone, upstairs in my cramped chair in my small office trying to enjoy playing on 20" screen and having to fork over $200+ each year for a better vid card keep my visuals and framerates decent and a system overhaul every 2-3 years.

After 9 years since building my own pc rig, its getting old......my gaming PC is being relegated to web surfing, video encoding and email for work and pleasure more and more. With some porn here and there....

There are certain games I'd rather play on my console than my PC, and Dead Space was console all the way.

I agree, Mass Effect especially. Nothing like a 400+ watt booming surround sound system blasting away when something explodes  I'd rather play on Live most of the time as well rather then PC gaming and have to deal with asshat admins and their gay rules and hackers/cheaters in various games. *cough* Counter Suck*..Team Fortress 2 gag*

I still very much enjoy PC from a technical aspect, but my PC gaming days are coming to their last breathe. Even StarCraft 2 doesn't interest me much anymore....

Surround sound systems don't work for PC games?
Anyway, I'd sooner quit gaming altogether than permanently switch to something like an Xbox360. 1280x720 stopped being acceptable to me over 5 years ago, I'd say.

With PC gaming becoming even cheaper with increased advantages, and consoles not changing, I would worry about consoles being threatened mostly. However that's not the kind of culture we live in, I guess (PC's are for office work, consoles are for gaming).
Even a $500 system will destroy any console these days.

edit;
I was just googling around for some 1080p info and found this:

lol
There are some console games that run 1080p, but they're usually simpler games. Anyone running PC games at 1080p are going to be even simpler looking.

720p is a sweetspot this gen for consoles.

Most console games aren't even rendered at 1280x720. They are rendered at something weird like 960x540, or even lower, then scaled to 720p or whatever internally.

I loved the first DS on my PC. Playing in my recliner up close to the screen with surround sound being all imersed in the scary atmosphere. I have a PS3 but won't get that same immersion on the couch so far away from the TV and no M+KB. If it doesn't come out on PC i'm going to pass on it rather than play it on the console, just doesn't interest me.

The IDE/toolset is usually on the PC side (honestly, I can't think of many cases where anything is done on the console in terms of code/asset creation), but it's very rare that the game is being developed to run on the PC unless there is a PC port being done. The debugging tools and such just link into the console's dev kit to get back the relevant information and send builds direct to the console to be run that are compiled to be run on the console.

I loved this game and am really disappointed.

Just like Fable 2. I really wished that had been released on PC. I loved Fable 1 - so much fun.

Or Madden 2010 - just another disappointment
