No audio through DisplayPort

Hi,

I just recently set up a new monitor (Dell U2711) to use also as my tv/playstation gaming setup along with my desktop. (I have speakers hooked up to the monitor and I get great sound from watching tv and playstation)

The PC is hooked up to the monitor with a DisplayPort cable (straight DP to DP) going to an Nvidia Quadro FX 580 video card.


I am getting a perfect picture, but the problem is that there is no audio.

I've contacted Nvidia tech support several times over the past week and they have been of little help. I was told that they were sending my issue to "level 2 testing" however they never got back to me. (I've followed up a few times and I keep getting the same generic reply of "soon you will hear back.")

So, I was hoping that the great folks of [H] might be able to assist me.

Nvidia claims that the video card supports audio and that it supports it through DisplayPort. However, when I open the Nvidia Control Panel on Windows (7-64bit), I do not see any areas that address sound. (I've read on other forums that there is supposed to be a section called "Set up Digital Audio." I don't see that on my screen anywhere. I have all of the latest drivers as far as I can tell.
 
hmmm... is there an option in the windows sound control panel for an nVidia DP audio device? I've seen posts of other computers (macbooks) working with audio output via DP on the U2711. I don't know if those peoeple used a soundbar or anything, but it shouldn't matter.
 
I think I saw a post somewhere else saying you have to connect something from the video card to the mb to get audio via DP on Nvidia cards. ATI/AMD does this much better than Nvidia on their cards.

Gnasher - Yes, I learned about that recently, too. I went ahead and plugged in that little cable from the video card to the mobo (SPDIF OUT). Nothing changed after plugging it in. I searched but never found any further instructions that I might have to do after plugging in the cable.

Jeremy - Here is a photo of my Windows Sound Control Panel. Nvidia Audio doesn't show up as one of the options. I don't understand why.

Ah, it's a G96 card, it might not work at all.... :( DP connectivity isn't that great on these old GPU cores.
 
Get a belkin cable normally sold by Dell. It should work as it got 19 pins

hmm, as in the hardware itself has some faults in connecting up with DP? The brochure for it claims that it can support passing audio.

I had been under the assumption it was something wrong with the drivers or something related to that since none of the audio settings appear when it is plugged in. If it turns out that it just simply won't do it for the reason's you suggested.... What might be my options for getting sound from the PC, Playstation and cable tv box? The Monitor does not have a SPDIF IN. It only has the 3.5mm jacks for Front, Rear, Center/Sub.

Ah, so you think perhaps my display port cable is at fault?
Is there something particular I need to look for in a replacement? All Belkin cables will work or just one with a certain feature?
I really have little experience with DP or HDMI.
 
Well, I'd recommend trying a HDMI cable, first, HDMI can support the higher resolutions, in the later specs, at least (1.3?? I don't recall, actually).

Otherwise, try a cheap modern nVidia card or AMD card with DP. It could simply be related to the audio passthrough functionality on older nVidia cards being limited to the HDMI output only? nVidia audio doesn't show up because the G96 core in your GPU uses your motherboard's audio device (the cable you drew between your mobo and GPU).
 
My video card doesn't have HDMI out. It has 2 Displayports and a DVI. It's a workstation card which I use it first and foremost for 3D work. It's just frustrating not to be able to work with sound.
 
Not sure if this will help much but...

I recently went through this same scenario and had to get audio to my GTX 280 so I could output it through an HDMI cable to my TV. Basically the same scenario you have here. My sound control panel looked just like the one you have in your screenshot and I wasnt able to get any sound. A few minutes of googling gave me the result that you need to enable output of SPDIF through your motherboard via your bios. Once I did that, a new option showed up in Windows 7 and it worked like a charm.

Granted you have a Gigabyte and I have an Asus, but if you havent checked there yet - I would.

The only sound options in my motherboard BIOS is for "Azalia Audio" and I have that set to [Auto]. There is nothing specific for SPDIF. This thing is really driving me crazy.
 
Nvidia tech support has been a joke through this entire process. Not a funny joke, either.

Contacted them again today, since it has now been 10 days since I was originally supposed to receive "level 2 tech support" from them.

Speaking with the exact same person I spoke to on March 8, actually... she tried to get me off as fast as she could and it was obvious. She kept suggesting things like "restart the computer, it will work, thanks" and after a few minutes even tried to convince me that the card doesn't support audio. Which I find funny since the brochure and the SPDIF channel kind of prove otherwise. Also, the fact that none of the people I had spoken with before told me this (and they spent 30-45 minutes with me troubleshooting)

Once again I was told my issue was being escalated to the all powerful, all knowing, Level 2 tech support. The phantom level of support that never contacts me back.

Think I'll shy away from Nvidia next time I need something.

So, I'm still having the same trouble. I sure wish these quadro cards were more popular. Finding any support on them is minimal.
 
try a DVI--HDMI adaptor from ATi, it could be the audio device passthrough on earlier (G96 - 9500gt equiv) nVidia ASICs only supported HDMI audio passthrough.
 
Thanks Jeremy, I will pick one of those up and give it a try. It will mess up my configuration (HDMI is already being used by another device) but I will try anyways.
 
You won't get audio using a DVI>HDMI adapter because DVI does not do audio.

yeah, they use several of the ground pins of the DVI port to do the audio hookup. Most adaptors won't do this, but some will (like the one bundled with my MSI GTX460 768MB TWIN FROZER II - WHY they included a DVI--HDMI adaptor with audio passthrough, I don't know why, but they did, despite the card already having a mHDMI port and bundling a mHDMI--HDMI adaptor :p)

and many ATi cards from the HD3000/HD4000 lineup did this, too.
 
I have one of those adapters, thing it came with a 4870, but thought it was purely for video.
 
Thanks everybody for the help and suggestions. Haven't decided which route to take with this.

Very upset with Nvidia, (still never contacted me back, first contacted them March 8th). Don't think I will ever buy anything from them again.... at least not until ATI treats me worse.

I have the exact same problem, The PC is hooked up to the monitor with a DisplayPort cable (straight DP to DP) going to an Nvidia Quadro k4200.
My the monitor doesn't show in the playback list its shows exactly same as your pictures!
