No 80 conductor cable installed...I'm stumped :/

I get that on bootup. Now, to the best of my understanding, that's indicating that I'm using an old old IDE cable, one that while it used 80 "pins", only used 40 wires, is that correct? If so, the problem is, I'm using the cables that came with my asus a7n8x(nforce2 chipset mobo for those who don't know), so I wouldn't imagine they could be that style of cable. My harddrive also refuses to run at anything other than UDMA 33, which is odd, since it's a maxtor 120gig 7200rpm ata133 hd :/ Any ideas?
 
one of the pins on the hard drive may be bent or the cable may be damaged. also the cable could be bad from the factory. try another 80 wire cable if you have one. the 80 wire cable has 40 data wires like the old cables but has a additional 40 ground wires (at least that is my understanding).
 
the weird thing is, I tried switching the cables between my cdrw and my hd, and I still got the message, but I don't get a message saying that there's no 80 conductor cable attached to the secondary channel :/
 
80 conductor, 40 pin cables are required by ata66, and were first introduced with ata33. The "old cables " are 40 conductor, 40 pin, and are still fine to use for cdroms and such. In addition to the additional 40 conductors that serve as grounds to reduce cross talk and emi/rfi, they added a method of detection to the cable, so your system isnt sensing the break in one of the lines. The drive running at ata33 is further proof of this. Replacing the cable should do the trick.
 
Seems odd that *both* cables that came with my mobo are bad :/

I guess I'll try replacing it then. Anyone have any recommendations on where to get a good quality cable? I've never had any problems with cables that came with motherboards, in terms of them breaking apart, but I've bought "generic" IDE cables from various computer stores in the past and they fall apart at the slightest tug, I don't want taking my IDE cables out to be like open-heart surgury heh.
 
What's on the same channel as the HD? If you put an optical drive on the same channel, that is most likely causing the problem.

Only put another fast HD on the same channel if speed is a concern.
 
I only have two IDE devices; my 120 gig hd, and my cdrw. HD is primary master, cdrw is secondary master.
 
well, you'll have to go process of elimnation

using the cable, hook your hd to the secondary channel and see if you still get the error

if so, swap the cable

still getting the error, try a different drive, or try the drive and cable in a different computer and see if it stays at ata/33
 
The A7N8x comes with two IDE cables. One of them is an 80 conductor cable for hard drives and the other is a 40 conductor cable for CDROMs. It sounds like you may have the two cables switched.

Get the 80 conductor cable on the hard drive and them in Windows, try to change the Ultra DMA to 100 or 133. If the hard drive had the 40 conductor cable on it originally, then Windows would have set the drive up as ATA33 and probably doesn't know the 80 conductor cable is there and still has the drive setup as ATA33.
