Nintendo Wii @ [H] Console: Nintendo is back with a vengeance and is going toe to toe with the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Can the Wiimote nunchaku continue to successfully fend off the competition or is it just a whole lot of flailing?

Nintendo has always been a family friendly company with the majority of their titles being targeted towards the Teen and E rated crowd. So far, the company’s efforts to cater to the casual gamer has been a huge success and, if current sales numbers are any indication, the Wii could easily be the console to catch.

You didnt mention that the Wii's wifi wont work with Belkin routers. Unless they fixed it and I guess I need to go look that up then.

I have a Belkin wireless router acting as an access point.

no connectivity issue at all.

Too bad that it does in fact work....

I have a Belkin wireless router and have no issues what-so-ever.

I have tried each and every setting in mine but it refuses to connect ever. When we got it, their forums were full of my belkin wont work threads. Nintendo's list of compatible routers even said that they Belkins were the only known ones to not work. Granted our isn't set as an access point specifically. We have it set up as a wireless router.

I bought one of these little guys 2 days after xmas for $150 bucks. Fun little system, I don't game much anymore but it's a blast to play especially bowling when drunk. I recomment it to anyone looking for somwthing different. :D

What is your model # and version? See your thread for more info.

I posted it in the other thread. I will end my troubles here and keep them to my post. They updated the list since I last checked hence the guess I better look that up part of my post.

I've had a Wii since release day and I enjoy it very much.

One thing that I did notice about pointing it that it works a lot better when you are aiming straight ahead at the tv instead of up or down towards it. At least for myself, if I am playing at the level of the tv instead of sitting at a downward angle from it, or standing at an upward angle from it, then it seems to register my pointing just fine.

Not a bad read.

Personally I think you should have commented on how games feel in multiplayer on the Wii. Meaning none so far or even what is planned. Also how the Wii's connection to the net is pretty slow or the annoying Mario hitting coins for downloads. That tells me nothing.

Little tired of the "Con: No dvd playback" but that's just me. Who doesn't have a dvd player these days? They are like $20 bucks at walmart and I'm sure if someone wanted one they have one by now.

Would have liked to see a little more thoughts of how the gaming was for you with other games unless that is planned for more articles later ;)

Oh and I can now comment about the stupid retards throwing wiimotes at their tv and breaking shit. I dont see how they could possibly so retarded to even come close to doing that. Nintendo couldnt have possibly seen that level of stupidity when they designed the wiimote. You dont have to use your entire body to use the motion features. A simple flick of the wrist is all it takes.

I have had one since launch day, and still loving it. Latest fun is WarioWare! Looking forward to Mario Party, Smash Bros, Galaxy and Metroid!

I do have a question though, is for those of you who keep yours connected to the internet24/7 how hot does your wii get? {insert pun here}

thanks

Now that the initial novelty has worn off for me, I am kinda meh on the Wii. The kids absolutely love it, and that is after all, all that matters to me.

I wish there was a way to just cancel a connection try. Sometimes when I steal someone wireless signal to get a VC title the Wii takes 10, 15, even 20 minutes to try and connect without any way for us to cancel it until we turn it off and then back on. Some areas connection tries do eventually seem to timeout, but in other areas they never do.

There's one issue with your review that I noticed: The Wii can upscale older Gamecube games with component cables. Other than that, I don't really have any complaints.

Had a Wii since launch (actually, this is the first system I waited for on launch day...).

Fun little system, but I just recently got broadband where I live and have just started using the online parts of the Wii.

I must say, the friend code system is aggravating.

Would like some more stuff for the Miis...

Mii, Mii, Mii, its all about Mii isn't it? Sorry, had to. What kind of stuff for the mii's? I dont really see a point to them, other than to add a bullet point for feature.

We did address the need for component cables versus composite / S-video. But, the Wii will only display 480i GC games in 480p if the game supports it. There is no actual upscaling to 720p or AA added like the Xbox 360.

Mmmm. While I agree that the Mii is a glorified bullet point, they did take the time to integrate the Mii into the Wii, so I would like to see more thought go into them.

What kind of stuff? Tattoos. Alien/Fantasy/"And Such" heads/bodies and the like. I mean, come on, I have in my hands a controller capable of being used as a paintbrush, and I still can't be any more creative than what Nintendo tells me I can be. Granted, you can make a lot of Miis with what they give us, but, as a company that wants us to make our Wii our own, this seems a bit...limited.

Can the Wiimote nunchaku continue to successfully fend off the competition or is it just a whole lot of flailing?

Nope. The novelty and solid fanbase is what brought them into the light this time around, but we'll see this erode as time goes on. They will have to change their gaming strategy to keep up, compete, and meet changing needs for the gamer/consumer. I am guessing Nintendo realizes this, so what they have going on 'behind the scenes' is anyone's guess...my theory on the Wii is they wanted to get something out into the market (a showing since the 360 and PS3 was stepping out), but there is not a lot of innovation in the product (outside of the controller).

I bought one for the wife, and like a couple said in this thread...the whole nunchuk controller novelty is wearing off...now she's grabbing up 360 time...again.

I don't have any consoles but I would have to disagree. While the initial fad of the controller may be dying off for some people since that may have been the only reason they got it in the first place; I think it will gain much of its appeal back as long as new games come out that make proper use of it.

There is a lot more to it than just a controller I think. Once developers start doing new things you could not previously do, things will change again. I would not get stuck in the mindset that you have to adapt the controller for games that have been played. I'm betting there are games to be designed specifically with the controller in mind that can now be realized.

The controller has a chance to create new types of games rather than just changing the current types of games out there.

One word: Madden

For all those that think the novelty of the Wii is wearing off... go grab Madden.

Madden on the Wii is really an experience. There are many _layers_ to the control system, but after spending a couple of hours it will all start to feel natural. At this point I don't even have to think about what I want to do next... my body just involuntarily moves in response to what's happening on screen.

To power move your way through the line, throw a stiff arm then juke out a DB for a 20 yard running touchdown is just sheer joy. Since your physical motions are being interpreted connecting all the moves together and ending up in the end zone is beyond satisfying!

Seriously... if you like football, even a little bit, go get this game!

PS - Zelda is good too ;-)

Wow, I was getting worried - an hour for a reply ;)

I agree with what you're eluding to...but, the controller was not 100% of my focus on the Wii - just an additive.

There is no longer a need for a GameCube, a SNES, NES, Sega Genesis or TurboGrafx 16. If you didn’t own any of these systems before, you now have access to most of the games from each system right at your finger tips.
um... this is kind of misleading. there are only a few games out on each system for virtual console. most of the best games haven't been made available for download yet...

other than that, great article. I thought that [H] wasn't going to review the Wii, but I stand corrected :) Kudos for a really detailed evaluation (and the thing about the wireless sensor bar is useful, I haven't seen that in any other reviews)

tbh it's just a last gen console with a fancy controller which while great has limited use. The PS2 has lots of *fancy* additions - eyetoy, dance mat, sing star, buzz quiz, guitar hero... these are just as original and fun. Hence I've got to say if you like the wii just buy a second hand ps2 and a load of these party games. You'll get much more variety and long term playability and it's half the price (for the games and the hardware these days).

1. It's NOT stereo, its Dolby Prologic, and it does work great in my home theater.

2. Wii points for games are NOT priced according their original system. The prices you list is the base price, some are higher some are cheaper. It all depends on how greedy those who owns the rights are.

Anyways, I'm VERY happy with mine :) And happy with the 'Gold' medal it earned at [H]

Still lovin it. Left it with my mom one day and when I went back to check the time spent in the logs it was about 4 hours, she was up playing the thing till like 1am. She's pushing like 57 years old, so I'll bet she was sore the next day. It's a great system.

Even my wife - who is "the anti-gamer" - loves the Wii. We got it for Christmas and play just about every night.

Got Warioware yesterday...talk about a great (and VERY weird) game!

Well, this weekend some buddies and I got together to watch the UFC fight. We always meet several hours before to get some gaming in. I brought my Wii over and we played it for 4hrs. We stopped because it was late and we needed to watch the fight we bought.

They loved it. We got some golfing and bowling tourney's on. Played some WarioWare and it was just a complete laugh fest. I wish I would have brought Trauma Center as that game was a big hit the previous weekend. Can't wait for specific developed games are brought out. Would love for developers to think outside the box.

I got my tax refund from the federal and I was like..."fix transmission on car or get a nintendo Wii."

Of corse I made the latter mistake and got the wii.
The transmission is not too critical but it'll get it's justice soon lol.
I bought a Wii system, 1 extra controller+nunchaku, Wario ware.

First impression: WOW is all I have to say.

My room mate and I have been playing bowling all weekend.
He'd walk in the room when I'd be finishing up a game and he'd join in for some instant frontroom bowling alley action. Not to mention my Superbowl party, everybody was BLOWN away how you could play a game while throwing a controller around. Very innovative.
It's funny how you can get people that NEVER play video games to actually enjoy the Wii. That says ALOT!

My only con is that we had to relocate the Wii near the front of our front room so that the sensor bar could be where it belongs.
I have a 9 foot projected screen, so it was a huge pain in the ass trying to figure out how the hell everything will cable out.
Not to mention the "media switcher", amplifier, and other components in the opposite corner needed the AV input from the Wii as well.
Basically I had to run RCA extenders to the media switcher so that the projector could get a feed.

Thankfully the Wii can be turned on and off with the remote or I'd be pretty pissed. The only downfall to the whole setup is that we have to walk to the corner of the room and feed the Wii a game disc. Other then that, it's not bad at all. It's almost like the Wii does not exist in my front room. I'll tell you one thing that really stands out...
My arm, shoulder, and wrist hurts something terrible from hour after hour of bowling during the last 3 days.

For those looking for Wii systems... may I suggest SEARS.
I got mine without trouble from SEARS.
It seems that people forget that SEARS has a video game department.

Good writeup on the [H] though.
In all honesty I really don't care that it does not play DVDs as a con.
I think a good CON for the system would be, NOT PROJECTION ROOM / HOME THEATER FRIENDLY.

I'll post some pics of how we jerry-rigged our front room with projection system. It works rather well although 2 player can get rather cramped without getting in the way of the projection beam path or taking a Wii-mote in the face.

Yeah, the reason this took so long to come out is that Steve's Wii was one of the ones that bricked during that first WiiConnect24 update. Did you notice the pics of the error message in the section he mentions the update problems? Those are genuine first-hand pictures from when his Wii got borked. :(

Steve, I wonder where that second Wii came from, haha.

YOU!

This is actually the THIRD Wii to get the review finished. FedEx totally crushed the second Wii:

http://www.****************************/fed_wii.jpg

Notice the one side of the box is 1/2 the size of the other side. Since that had nothing to do with the review, it didn't warrant mention. Look at it this way, it is next to impossible to find a Wii....and this is my 3rd unit.

1. It's NOT stereo, its Dolby Prologic, and it does work great in my home theater.

Dolby ProLogic II takes a stereo signal and emulates surround sound the best it can but it is still not true 5.1 sound.

I wonder how Nintendo knows whether a particular Wii is from the USA or Japan or Australia.

Reason being that I bought a Wii here in America, and I plan on moving to Australia next year, and I'd like to take it with me. I have no interest in re-buying all my Wii and virtual console games. I understand I will need a new power brick, but those can be had from the Nintendo website or eBay.

All I got to say is....

Drunk WII Sports bowling rocks the block.
I'm hosting a party this weekend with over 12 people already though my myspace connection.

Just for bowling, drinking, hanging out, and staying out of the Chicago cold and snow.

ROCK AND ROLL Wii!!!!

Good review, I definitely agree with many of your points...

but anyways the novelty has pretty much worn off for me, and the only game in wii sports I really like is Bowling, although gold, tennis and boxing are nice distractions as well, although boxing has probably the worst controls of all the games I played, today I played twilight princess for the first time, and although the controls where kinda annoying at first, I am pretty much used to them and playing threw it now, so far so good, will probably take me awhile to go threw it as I only play games a max of 2 hours a day unless it's the weekends.

Anyways... so far I'm happy with the wii and am also eagerly anticipating Nintendo's top titles for it, I will admit Zelda doesn't look great, but it still looks damn good for a gamecube port and I'm sure the wii has the capability to do quite a bit better.

The technical aspects of Dolby Pro Logic II and Stereo aside, when I was playing Zelda, the quality of the audio struck me immediately (hooked up to a standard 2.1 audio system). So even tho it wasnt a true surround sound setup, they did an excellent job with the prologic.

I have a question for the adventureous Wii owners, as I wasn't able to test it while I had the wii in my possession (bought it for nephews, had it around for a week while they stayed over).

Has anyone gotten divx/xvid/rm/mov encoded videos to run on the Wii? I noticed that the avi files (not divx/xvid encoded) that my digi-cam takes ran perfectly fine in the photos area. I didn't get a chance to test out the other, more proprietary formats like real-media, quick-time mov, divx/xvid, etc.

The other thing is, does the opera browser for the Wii support streaming video (specifically WMV)? Meaning if I setup a win2k machine with a streaming video server, and dial in my local IP on the browser, can I use the Wii as a pseduo media center, albeit with a browser frame around the video?
