You may have overheard the commotion about Nintendo launching a mini version of the Super Nintendo (surprise!) yesterday, but I am here with the exclusive news that the SNES Classic Mini will only be available on store shelves for seven days. Okay, I totally made that up, but you better hope your finger is on the pre-order button the second it's listed if you ever hope to get one.

Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer. The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated. Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.

I can't wait to buy one of these from ebay for 10x MSRP!

Nintendo is taking the "Disney Classics" approach to things maybe? Release "Little Mermaid" for a random month and then stop, start again, stop....

i guess this is either for stupid people who don't know about emulators or folks who really want to follow terrible ip laws.
Or maybe some investors who are waiting for Nintendo to make these then stop, then sell them on ebay for double or triple the price. That strategy is working for the switch so why not?

Why people do this?

A Pi Zero, a little how to and you can have RetroPi running in no time.

And then discontinue the sales completely after 12 months and the whole time, almost no one was able to track one down. :D

I'll grab 10 if I can.

People want this cause a Pi, desktop, or laptop with emulators doesn't have the cute console shell and controller.

Because reading a how-to guide and following instructions is more effort than 90% or more of the population is willing to bother with when they could just open a box and plug it into the TV instead. This is like asking why people don't do their own oil changes, it's not difficult on most cars just time consuming if you don't have a pit to drive over, already own tools, have a stock of oil and filters, and the time to have learned how to do it.

Many people I know just find it morally wrong.
As far as I'm concerned, once a product is no longer available for purchase all bets are off.

Nintendo went decades without selling their catalogue of SNES/NES/N64 games, if a company isn't willing to sell a product, I have no problem acquiring it through other means.

That said, you'd be hard pressed to find a good game from those eras that I didn't already own.

I have to say fuck Nintendo. They could easily increase quantities which would actually make them more money. They are just being dicks. Fuck them I will keep playing all those games on my PC. This coming from someone who was ecstatic when I first heard about it. For Nostalgia sakes I would pay 60 bucks for something easy to use that is compatible with new TV standards. At 250+ they can eat a dick. I can't believe the way they handled the NES version so I have no hope for the SNES version. For everyone that can actually get them at MSRP I envy the hell out of you.

Right. Maybe it's where I live but many people I know won't even consider it an option.

For those who have a Wii laying around. They are ridiculously easy to mod. From there you can play NES, SNES, Gameboy, even Sega Genesis games from there.

I'll buy it because that console pretty much defined my childhood. But I won't be happy about it :(

Fuck you Nintendo.
You and me both. I just have too many fond memories of the SNES. Chrono, Link to the Past, Mario World, FF IV and VI, Secret of Mana, and so many more great games.

I'm still not sure WTF they discontinued with NES mini. I'd, personally, rather have one of those than the SNES.

Hackers were having too much fun making all the games accessible with it.

I still have my NES with a gold plated cartridge holder but I don't have a TV to play it on unless there is something for LCD monitors.

Fuck Nintendo as a company -- sure, I want one, but I also wanted a NES classic, was perfectly willing to pay MSRP... but they shorted production and then just flat stopped making it after a few months.

Why would I get excited about this when they will do the same thing? They could rake in a lot of cash from the older (35) gamers that grew up with all this stuff and have disposable income, but they don't seem too interested.

I'd say for the average person android is a much better way to go. Way less hassle for the same price imo

I just got my portable console system setup, between this and an android box I'm a happy old nerd lol

Sure, but it doesn't look like a Super Nintendo.
They recently got composite 240p working on the pi, so on my old TV it's gotten a lot closer to the look of a real console. There's a bit of a problem with timings still, causing the horizontal pixels to be a bit stretched looking and there's a bit of a rainbow banding effect with some patterns, but in most cases it's hardly a distraction. Had you walked into a home and saw it up and running on a CRT screen you'd likely not know it wasn't the real thing. Even seeing side-by-side comparisons it's difficult to tell one apart from the other.

The biggest problem, and I have this with the Classic NES, is the input lag. Very noticeable on precision games like mario, which just feel a tad floaty compared to the real deal.

Just get this https://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-iBuffalo-Classic-Gamepad-BSGP801GY/dp/B002B9XB0E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492699157&sr=8-3&keywords=snes+controller+pc
Download a free emulator, find free roms all over the net and start playing.

If it's for investment, then sure, buy 100.
Controller is actually pretty cool, thanks! Still, people want the cute mini console box to go with that controller.

I'm totally happy with the EMU on my desktop and regular USB controller.

I would only buy these to flip them.

I want it for collectors reasons. I already have emulators (on multiple machines), but it's not an official Nintendo product that can sit on my shelf unopened that I have to dust every few weeks.... collecting things is stupid. Damn. Maybe I'm just hording.

Oh goody another console to scalp! Can't wait to see how much these will be sold for on Ebay. Forget Nintendo, Snes9x is where it's at!

The SNES is probably the best console ever made. That being said though, I'll be damned if I'm going to let them sell my childhood back to me.

I get it, Collecting consoles is fun. Heck I just purchased a PS1 and all the games I used to own. I've played it a couple of times since but really its just collecting dust. I'd much rather play the PSXE emulator I have at 1440p with the HD filters though. Does that cheapen the experience? Maybe a little.

Everyone buy 5, if you ever see them in stock, because they need the revenue to make the N64 Mini 12 months later after these are also impossible to find. (No Goldeneye007 though due to MGM and RARE copyrights.)
Oh, Nintendo! Bunch of fucking wankers.

Still own my original SNES. :) And most of the carts of what I want to play. Doesn't mean I won't try and buy this. HAHA. Try being the appropriate word.

I had the same problem until I moved to BSNES.

BSNES emulates the console flawlessly, frame rate slowdowns and all. You actually feels like you're playing on an SNES.

The major problem is that a raspberry doesn't have the horsepower to actually run it.

But what I was actually referring to with my comment above was the actual shape of the console ;)

Are they going to make a limited quantity available like the NES one from last year? That was stupid! They should know demand will be high. Get the sweat shops cranked up and start pumping these out now.

How many games do you expect to see on Nintendo's SNES? 50ish? Which ones? Casuals want the 1st party titles and a couple popular ones, but what about all the amazing Square and Enix RPG's? Disney and Konami platformers? All the late-gen Mode 7 / 3d games? Capcom's megaman and fighter library? Koei's strategy/simulation lineup?

either way it'll be a hot resell item
