Nintendo Switch 2 arrives June 5th, 2025

As we thought, because there isn't an OLED the much advertised HDR performance isn't great. 450 nits of maximum brightness with absolutely piss poor black levels (0,5 nits, definetly IPS screen) and no local dimming. This is basically the fake HDR image we get from cheap monitors that advertise to support HDR.

In docked mode it is fine if HDR is well implemented the game. Some games are fine, some are not and we get the usual washed out gamma and increased black level floor when HDR is on. The usual.

I think it depends on how many people will pay for modded Switch 2's. The only reason why emulators and mods exist for Nintendo products is because people will pay money for this. It's probably why Nintendo shut down Yuzu and scared Ryujinx into hiding, because this was becoming a profitable business. It's not likely to be less profitable with the Switch 2, so how many talented hackers are willing to piss of Nintendo? We shall see.

There's already been a number of YouTubers showing off their Switch 2. Nothing worth watching as they don't show any games or even using the thing. The UI looks the same, which is all I got out of it.
The Switch 2 is likely using Yuzu for original Switch games since it doesn't have the original hardware to run them natively.

Could get one from AAFES but I have to remind myself there is zero reason for me right now, and prime 4 is on switch anyways.

My Target online preorder still hasn't shipped but they've already hit my card with a real charge. That's some bullshit.
Nintendo shipped mine 2 day so it arrives today. Pleasantly surprised.

If I knew Target would have this many on the shelf I'd have canceled my pre-order and just rolled up this morning. Looks like it's too late to cancel at this point, though. Plus, I don't necessarily want to drive to one only to find that they don't really have them, too.

On their site/app you can reserve in store - or should be able to at least see qty.

Not great, but at the same time... I don't think this is going to matter much for most gamers. As it stands, I wouldn't count on an OLED version arriving quickly (remember, the Switch OLED launched in fall 2021). It's definitely better than any LCD iteration of the original Switch.

Got mine in from walmart early AM with a 20oz coke and sour cream and onion pringles for the gamer in me. Selling it to buddy at cost though, so wont even get to crack it open.

Meh.

Max brightness of 450 nits with contrast ratio of 450:0.5 = 900:1 is fine for an lcd panel in a device of this price class. Could be better, but most certainly not "very poor".

Most Switch 2 videos ("reviews") seem to be hot-take garbage to bait people into views at this point. Typical worthless youtuber behavior around a tech launch.

But then I suppose you don't win many subscribers by saying, "It's pretty decent, about as advertised"

Right now there are virtually no real reviews. I've seen a lot of unboxings, but that's mainly because what you could do with the Switch 2 pre-launch was extremely limited (boot it up and play physical copies of Mario Kart World, really). I don't fault YouTubers for doing those videos as long as they're not overselling them — they do have to make a living.

An example of good video surrounding the launch: Nintendo Life. It's going berserk with videos, but that's both the heart of their coverage and actually interesting if you want to learn more (gameplay, UI, accessories).

Except in this case it is objective, measurable facts and not hot takes. It is an IPS with no local dimming. It is not HDR capable even though it was advertised as such. It is something we videophiles were expecting but also cautiously optimistic that maybe Nintendo managed to deliver something better. Turns out, they did not. Again, not a hot take but a fact.

Walked into Target this morning, 2 hours after it opened, and picked one up. They had sold out of the Mario Kart version but still had about 8 of the non-bundle ones. I assume other targets in the area might still have had the bundle, as I went to a popular one, a less popular one would probably still have plenty.

Anyway was surprised how easy it was to get.

Was in the local Walmart and they had a display case full of both the regular and mario kart edition.

Prices are crazy, i have no intention of buying one, was just curious of availability.

$110 for mario cart world and $114 for newest zelda plus tax

There's still one of the non bundles left at the target near me, no bundles in any close stores though. The non-bundles seem to only be in stock at target, checking everywhere else everything is gone.

Only a couple units left at the Targets around me now. I have to give it to Nintendo for having a good stock built up for launch.

It's definitely very early, but it sounds like Nintendo is beyond an instant sell-out (i.e. very constrained supply) but also not worried that units will sit on shelves for long. I'm curious to see if Nintendo will share sales figures from the day.

Maybe the Switch 2 won't sell like the Switch 1? Maybe selling over 100 million units doesn't matter when you've pissed away your communities good will?

Bought mine over lunch from Target. Was fortunate that the closest Target to me had a few left - the other nearby Target was completely out.

The one I went to was completely out of the bundles, had 5 standalone Switch 2's, sold out of cases, had maybe 7 physical copies of Mario Kart left, counted 3 copies of Switch 2 Street Fighter and 5 copies of Zelda TotK for Switch 2.

Objective maybe, but insincere. I got one and, honestly, the screen looks great.

We nerds love to get outraged over pendantry, but those youtubers bitching about the display are picking at anything they can to use as fodder for views / crappy videos.

I fault the ones doing all the insincere hype and hot takes, it all just adds to the cruft and noise when you're trying find useful reviews.

Besides, don't feel bad, they could get real jobs :p

Sounds like the HDR implementation in games when in docked mode is all over the place. Some games don't allow displaying 0 nits, so can't take advantage of black levels of OLED displays. Other games seem to handle it properly.

Gotta say Cyberpunk looks surprisingly good on the Switch 2.

The whole channel is about HDR, analysing games (or in this case hardware) how the feature is implemented, what are the issues and if possible how to fix them. If the screen is good or not is irrelevant in this case, it still doesn't do HDR properly full stop.

In this case I say you have to blame the developers of the each game individually. For example, the HDR Cyberpunk looks exactly the same as on PC. The issues included like wrong gamma and increased black floor. On PC we can fix that with RenoDX or Liliums HDR shaders, on console you are at the mercy of the developers if they had actually bothered to do a proper color grading for their HDR mode.

The funny thing is that some of the biggest creators (Marques Brownlee, etc.) had fairly tempered unboxing vids. More "we know you want it, so here it is" than amping up Nintendo.

I signed up for the bundle through Nintendo, but I still haven't gotten the purchase email yet. I didn't sign up until the second day it was open, so it's probably like the evga queue system for the 30 series where my turn to purchase will be in about 9 months. ;-) It's fine actually, I'm not quite ready to spend $500 for a new toy for the kids right now.

My Target order eventually did ship and it's now supposed to show up on Saturday, so not too bad. I had to stop by a Walmart yesterday around 6PM and they had 5-6 of the regular models available. A guy who was buying one was chatting with the clerk and she said she was surprised they still had some. I guess the Mario Kart bundles disappeared pretty quickly, but they got a whole bunch of the normal ones. The Targets around here are showing that they sold out of the non-bundles, but that there are a dozen'ish Mario Kart bundles available within 30 miles of here.

Got a unit from the Best Buy pre orders when they went live at Midnight in April and this morning, Nintendo sent an invite for there store and got another unit for the wife. Glad to see stock on this launch not being a pain.

I did have a OLED Switch, so the screen is a downgrade for me, but nothing game breaking (still an upgrade if you had the OG switch). The performance is much needed (fired up Pokemon and the character zipping around was a welcomed surprise), hopefully it just holds for the next 5-10 years or whatever years it will take Nintendo to release a new unit. Dont need cutting edge graphics, but even the OG unit was struggling on indie games (at least some of them that pushed some level of graphics).

Most of the launch titles are on PC. Does switch 2 have any backwards compatibility?
