i have thought my i5-2500K @ 4.3Ghz (need to set 1.26v in bios w/ LLC5) to get to even 4.3 CPU-Z reports vcore 1.28 ~1.32) was running to hot Intelburn test very high 80C on hottest core 70c on coolest.

So I went to fry's to buy more AS5 (LOL...really artic silver...perhaps i am slow just realized that could be read as ASS) of course fry's (does anyone else things it looks like fry's is really having bad stock ??? they seem to be out of everything..just not getting stuff?... wonder if they are having trouble?? anyways I digress). fry's was out of artic silver and just about anything else they had Antec formula 7 for $6 so i figured... meh ok.

got home took hyper 212 off clean everything.

Used different technique this time put thin layer on hyper212 base and then wiped clean with lint free cloth (to fill in cracks by heat pipes) and instead of pea method spead thin layer on cpu.

now either the formula 7 is much better or my appication of AS 5 had been terrible because hottest core on intelburn test (very high) is now 74C. I thought the AS 5 looked pretty decent when i removed the hyper212+ ...but a 6C dropped is kinda awesome

I wonder if i can finally get to 4.5 now.... i have not been able to get 4.5 tried more volts but still bsod'd and temps where not going to be ok with me (mid 80s) before bsod .. before reseating it..

I may have to have a go??

this Antec stuff is a PIA to spread however.

This is why i always spread. Pea method is good on paper, but unless you 're expert working with a specific paste, the installation is guessing. How much paste? Not all pastes spread the same under pressure. Did you put too small or too big of a pea? While installing, did you incline a bit the heatsink, making it spread more towards one direction? Unless you 've done a lot of practice with a specific paste, all this becomes "apply and pray".

While with the spread method, you know what you 're doing. You can still do a bad spread by using too much paste. But once you understand that the layer must be very thin and even, it's much easier to control. Spread= guarantee that the spread is optimal.

Besides, with Ceramique and 3 coolers i 've tested, i saw no benefit from pea method. On the contrary, i 've done some bad spreads with pea method, due to difficulty of installing the heatsink.

Pea method is fine for youtube, where you have a transparent plexiglass to press on and you can see what's happening.

Pea lovers could do the "combo" method. Spread very thinly and add a small drop on the center. Just to make sure that it will have no "air pockets" in the middle.

Also, the spread method, helps spreading the heat also horizontaly on the heatspreader, before trasfering it vertically. Heat travels better through the same metal, so the larger the surface that is "optimized", the better the heat transfer to the heatsink. This counterbalances the eventual loss due to the infamous "air bubbles".

what is weird ...is the paste (Aritc Silver 5) from before didn't look bad... seemed pretty well spead / not too little or much i thought

but 6C drop don't lie.... must have been air bubbles or something going on i guess?

In theory, it can't be air bubbles, since the point with the pea method is to avoid bubbles. So, either the heatsink was off center or the pea method didn't spread it really well (often when you remove the heatsink and specially if you move it left-right, it spreads more and you think you had a good mount while in reality it wasn't).

That's the advantage of spreading the whole surface. You get to see before installation how good your spreading was. With the "pea", is guesstimate.

The Hyper 212 isn't the type of heat sink the single dot method should be used on. The grooves between the heat pipes will channel the paste out and away, the outer heat pipe on either side will basically be untouched by paste with the dot method.

For the Hyper 212, if you want to apply paste to the CPU, just spread a thin layer across the whole thing. If you want to apply paste to the Hyper 212 itself, lay a long thin line along each copper heat pipe, it will spread until it reaches a groove, and the excess will be channeled away.
