nforce2 cooling patch

looks like a good idea for dvr/pvr setups that are on all the time and are cramed in small
cases with quiet cooling but like {OC'n}Cyborg said load temps should be the same.

ps, the folding crew may take offense to you having a computer idle for an extended peroid
of time :D

I'm glad you guys find that useful.
As soon as I saw the patch I thought it was a good idea to send the news to HardOcp :)

heh, someone better check their temps with a HARDWARE temp monitor. this thing might've just screwed with ur thermo sensor.

i mean, if this thing rEALLY works with no ill-effects, why weren't ANY of the manufacturers smart enough to enable it in the first place? i don't think some no-name mod group can enable something as good as this, when all the hundreds of engineers or whatever that gets paid big bux to design mobos can't.

There may be a REASON they do not enable it. This is probably akin to halting the CPU when idle, which DID cause problems for many users .. especially notebook users.

my drop in temp has averaged 8C at Idle. NB has gone down 2C. both CPU and NB temps drop quickly after full load which makes this quite useful.

Is there a known way to undo the patch if you decide you want to go back?

I made a thread about this MONTHS ago because it is something that has been on AMDFORUMS.COM for almost a year now...this is old news.

Shutup, seriously.

Why don't you try learning exactly what it does first? It just enables a cooling method that MANY other mobo board manufacturers already use. Once you doing anything but PURE IDLE, your "idle" temps are the same. It just turns off cpu functions when at PURE IDLE.

Also, Epox definately has this turned off on their boards due to some "instability" which really nobody with an Epox board has experienced. Other mobo manufacturers DO already have it enabled...so your results will vary.

you can uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs.

Hmm...what is PURE IDLE...never heard that term before? And what is the difference between PURE IDLE and idle?

And what motherboard manufacturers DO already have it enabled? ASUS? How do you know...like what can a person do to check if this is enabled or not?

imo:
idle = moving mouse around, surfing, etc
pure idle = away from computer, and it's doing absolutely nothing

I'm gonna install it right now.

Well, my CPU dropped 2C, and that's it. Took a few mins to drop, and my water is still the same temp. Although, I think that 4C above water temp is fine as it is, and it's kinda hard to drop it more than that. I like having my rad fans on low.

Pure idle is doing NOTHING. Most people think idle means being on AIM, surfing the net...

Oh, and here is proof that this trick has been around for over a year, all your answers are in this thread...

hey dude, why don't YOU shut ur hole instead? ur the troll here telling anyone who is not a freaking computer nerd who goes on interenet forums all day and knows all about chips etc, to shut up. Did i ever say it won't work? NO i was just being skeptical, moron. Maybe it is because i don't have the credulity to believe everything on the internet, and risk my 1000 machine on it? not everyone is as rich as you

"EDITED: I edited it so I dont seem like such a jerk, but my OPINION still stands" - from mrface's other topic

LOL you even admit ur a troll. or oh wait! ur must be a 12 year old kid who still lives with ur parents! lol "my opinion stilll stands" LOL grow older and you'll learn that the world doesn't give a **** about ur opinion.

Yes, I'm a troll with my HUGE post count in well over a year of being a member on these boards.

Yes, I'm a 12 year old kid who lives with his parents. I'm not sure about your standards, but if being 21, living in my own place and being a systems engineer for a medical company is living with his parents and being 12, then I am.

You are a hypocrite.

shut up, more post count only proves a) ur a nerd b) you like to troll, ur 21 proves a) ur a puerile adult.

i'm not gonna come back to this topic, cause a) i don't wanna waste my time arguing with some moron b) people have screwed up their comps with this patch while using the A7N8X. I have basically the same board, so i'm not gonna use this.

good bye have a nice day

well i was gonna try this thing but my new A64 shall be here tomorrow

oh well

and as for all the kiddies in this thread, i hope you know the [H] rules well, you might be taking a vacation from posting for awhile

You just proved me right by saying "More post count only proves you're a nerd or troll"

Thanks for proving me right kid!

thenerd & MrFace why don't you both STFU and quit flaming each other and the thread, and keep on topic, you both are acting like my 3 year old.

Back to the topic: I have installed this on both of the systems in my sig and it did in fact drop my temps idle and load on both the Abit and Epox and I have not seen any ill effects as of yet.

I don't wanna get in on the flamewar..... but I find it funny that someone named "thenerd" makes fun of other people for being nerds

I just don't understand all this concern over the temps when at idle. Idle temps are so low the way it is, why introduce posible instability to get more of a thing that doesn't matter anyways.

Question: Does this actually increase the maximum overclock for any of you? If not, doesn't that sound a bit like the Cholesterol medication that hasn't been shown to reduce heart attacks or death?

Well it didn't lower my idle temps at all, so I guess I'm going to remove it.

As for all the "improving idle temps doesn't matter" comments, I guess I see that, but there is some peace of mind in having a cooler box, even if its only some of the time.

Installed and reboot, drop the CPU idle temp 5C, no side effects so far on system nor gaming. It's keeper for me.

Thx for the link.

Like I said before, some Nforce2 mobos already have this feature enabled.

What's the point in arguing here? There isn't.

Anyways, this patch hasn't messed up my A7N8X-X, but I wish I knew about this issue beforehand. My temps dropped slightly, but not enough to write home about. I guess Asus has kept up their standards once again, which makes me happy for sticking with them for so long. Asus reports temps 1C lower than my Aerogate2, and given the margins of error on the sensors, this is more perfect than I could have ever expected from a mobo.

I can't get into the advanced display settings anymore. I never tried between installing the 4.9 cats and this cooling patch, so I'm not sure who to blame. Reboots every time.

I uninstalled the patch, the ATI control centre, and the ATI drivers. Reloaded the 4.9's with the control centre, and I could access the advanced display settings right afterwards. Just came out of Doom3, went to set my card back to "stock", and it reboots again. Tried again, and it rebooted.

So now I'm off on my search for which 4.9 cat ogl file to stick in my Doom3 folder, so I can run the 4.8 cats. Hopefully this patch hasn't pooched my mobo.

edit: Wasn't the patch. Radlinker just hates the new ATI Control Centre. Installed the new Radlinker, and all is well again. :) Time to put the patch back on.

hahaha. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread.

Pure idle is a heap of shit. Even when you are away from the computer your processor is still doing stuff. And what is the big deal with idle temps anyway? They aren't a limiting factor of anything, so it should not affect overclocking. Only thing I can think of is less heat in the room. And who the fuck thinks that surfing the web is idling?
