Nforce2/AMD cpu trick...

You guys all hate me...but here's a little secret..You probably already know and will flame me, but I got this from another forum. It contributed to my arrogant post that has finally been locked...

"Just tried it for the first time..It works GREAT
My idle temps are now 26c, down from 34c. That's 8C. I can have Winamp, IE and messenger running and CPU temps don't get by 29c. Once i fire up, SETI though...I get back my regular Load temps at 39c.

Some of you probably know about it, already....here's for thousand others that don't.

This tweak can drop your idle CPU temps down as much as 8c, maybe more...depending on your system.

First thing you need to do is download WPCRSET & WPCREDIT.
They're both in this zip.
http://rh03.hostreflex.com/~pacman10/Drisler/wpcredit.zip
- Extract to a directory.
- Run "INSTDD.EXE". Click Install. When done, you will be prompted for restart. Hit Yes! -
- Then go back to the folder with extracted files, and open "WPCREDIT.EXE"
- A ms-dos like window will pop-up. Move the blinking block (with arrow keys or your mouse pointer) until it says Offset 6F at the buttom. Now, click on the two digit number where it says "HEX", and change it to 1F (The Hex for Offset 6F would have previously been 9F, 8F or something else). Hit Set.

Your idle temps should now start falling.
You would have to do this hack/tweak everytime you rebooted your computer if it wasn't for WPCRSET.

- Go to directory and run "WPCRSET.EXE"
- Look at the top of the window: Enable select "Start" and make sure Device is on "enable"
- Then click Add. Enter 6F for the register, and 1F for the data
- Click Ok and you'll be prompted to restart.

Once, you rebooted, open WCREDIT again and see if the 6F register is still on 1F. If it is, then that's it..You're all done."

It turns off certain unused parts of the CPU. Only "problem" I saw with it is that prime failed in the first test, otherwise my computer has been 100% stable for over a week now with this tweak.

My idle temp also went from 39c to 28C...

Nice hijack ;):D

so specifically, what does it do?

It lowers you IDLE temps by enabling certain built-in functions of the AXP. Most mobo makers disable it in the bios because it MAY cause instability especially when overclocked. I've done this on many nforce2s ...and I have had no problems.

It will not affect your performance or anything like that. It just disables part of the CPU when it's not in use.

FOR nFORCE2 ONLY.

Why is it nForce 2 only? Is there something on Kt333 motherboards (specifically the Epox 8K3A+) that will cause problems?

You can try it, it's just that the Nforce2 boards for some reason have the commands NOT in the bios. I think your mobo may already have the command, it's C1 or something?

Is your board an Nforce2 board? I'm only familiar with the Epox8rda+, which it dropped temps a lot.

its only for IDLE, as in youre doing nothing or next to nothing

Dunno about you guys, but my hex value was already "1F" so I didn't install anything, other than install that little prog and change my registry.

Running on a Shuttle SN41g2.

As for idling....that almost never happens. If it's on, I'm usually doing something with it. :D

lowered my idle temps about 10C. Cool trick

GET IT? IT'S A PUN! I ITALICIZED IT SO THAT YOU COULD FIND THE PUN MORE EASILY

I left WinXP with as little as possible running (no monitoring utils, no explorer or any services enabled) with the CPU at 0% for atleast 20 mins, came back, checked, same temps.

Did nothing. How come?

I think it may be majorly for Epox boards, because Epox disabled the function in their bios due to possible stability issues.

Other mobos already have the function, so thats probably why you dont notice it.

Also, the program that is supposed to set it automatically for you when you restart, doesn't work for me, I just manually do it.

shuttle's have that already

How 'bout just using a program like CPUIdle (I use this...like it better than CPUCool)? Sends the halt command to your proc when it's not in use by something else...without it running, I usually run around 33 - 37 degrees celsius on my 2.0 ghz p4 (clocked to 2.2 ghz) - with CPUIdle Pro running, I stay between 24 and 29 degrees celsius.

Just a thought...

avg 5 C drop, but it makes a noise in my rear speakers, so i won't be using it. (A7n8x dlx rev 2)

This isn't the same thing, thanks.

Nice, lost 8C from the current idle of 50 C (hot day) I can't wait to see it actually get under 40C tonight though.

Fun trick.

intersting.. id seen this before and thought it was just a messed up temp reading, and it was just adjusting a pre-added amount to the temp. Anyone care to try this with an external thermometer to see if it actually lowers temps?

It really lowers temps. I know because the rpms on my TT smartfan2 drop much lower than they used to when idle.

went from 40c to 33c... pretty cool trick. Wish it wasn't so hot in my room... used to get 30c idle in my old cooler apartment.

I haven't read the whole thread.... but what's the point of lowering idle temps?

Just make your room cooler?

ehh, I run F@H.... nice spatial heater.

My thoughts exactly. I guess lower temps might extend your cpus life a bit, but I don't think it would make much of a difference, and it is rather rare that cpus die of old age.

Yeah, thats about it, but lower temps never hurt eh

Run F@H. :p What is idling, again? I haven't seemed to have done that in a few months... :D

you're so cool.

I don't understand the point of lowering idle temps. Your system should be stable at idle if it's stable at load.

No kidding. Its a shame that there are this many idle computers...

Well then does this drop load temps as well? Also any OCed computers have any problems?

This does not effect load temps in the least. This effects the temps when your CPU is idle. It simply turns voltage off to certain parts of the core, as I understand.

the reason is to reduce total heat output, if you live in a confined space and your computer is heating up the room.
