True. But the same people then compare their flagship Android phone full of bloatware to a WP8 or iPhone which has none of the crap. The carrier doesn't care, they make money either way.

This is what happens when you have monopolies in the market.
 
The Verizon-Controlling-Everything-On-Their-Network will eventually die when VoLTE comes around in full swing. Since by definition LTE is OPEN (which they have recently violated with the Nexus 7), if it has the bands to be on the network, they have to support the phone, end of story. Verizon trying to control LTE/VoLTE will probably result in them having so much shit rain down on them from the government.
 
Don't count on it, they have very powerful and well paid lobbyists. They are trying to throw out net neutrality as well.

They are walking a fine line with the Nexus 7 - basically they won't activate a SIM card if you tell them it's for a N7 but if you lie and say it's something else, they will activate it. The whole "we need to run tests and certify the device for our network" is fucking bullshit - it's like buying a laptop and getting it certified by your ISP. If the phone follows FCC regs/IEEE standards, it should be allowed on the network - no bullshit.

I really hope the government comes down hard on them though but I doubt it will happen. Too much money and powerful people vieing to show who has the bigger dick.

The problem is, we probably have people that support Verizon in doing this (via lobbying) and pay them off and so on. We have way too many corrupt people in the government that would rather kill off the FCC in favor of putting Verizon in that spot.
 
What's the chances of this thing having an AMOLED screen? Particuarly with the G2 having LCD.

I'm long overdue an upgrade and if rumors are true I really like the look of the N5, but I think I'd miss my lock screen clock & notifications too much to go back to LCD.

The Nexus 5 chances of being AMOELD screen, are slim to none, as in zero chance, if it's indeed based off an LG phone.
 
Only rumor I am disappointed in, and hopefully not true, is the downsize battery compared to the G2.

The Nexus 5 is said to be based of LG's G2 hardware, which has a 3,000mAh battery, and all reviews saying the battery life on the G2 is outstanding and amazing, best in class, with the Note 2 and Motorola MAXX line.

But the N5 rumors point to a smaller 2,300mAh battery. I know Google needs to cut corners to keep the Nexus phones cheap, but please, don't cut the battery life to save money, would love to see it come with the same 3,000mAh battery as found in the G2.

You don't need to cut the battery. The cost difference is not that much and most people will be quite willing to pay the difference.

Consistency has jack shit to do with the color scheme. Different apps *should* look different. If all the apps on the OS have the exact same color palette, the UI designers screwed up or were lazy.

This has always driven me crazy about iOS. Everything has that same ugly grey theme, and you're pretty much stuck with that. I'm sure there are plenty of people who like that theme, but I don't. The only time the phone looks even remotely good is when running 3rd party apps.

It is about consistency. There's no reason why the contacts list uses different color schemes in the dialer vs People app. Settings are dark themed (ICS Holo), Google Now isn't, dialer is. Google Voice doesn't even follow any theme, it looks ancient.

All Google apps should use the same theme and be consistent in use of color.

The color scheme used in contacts should match the color theme of the context in which it is currently in. The contacts list in the dialer app looks like the dialer app, while the contacts list in people looks like the rest of the people app. Continuity within an app itself is vastly more important than continuity of a similar menu. Of course, you could make the argument that the dialer app and the people app should look more alike, perhaps.

Apps representing Google services are generally light colored. Settings and the dialer are not Google apps, because they don't represent Google services, so it isn't inconsistent if they don't match Google's apps. What is most important is that those two apps match each other, because they both represent built-in device functionality.

Google Voice is no more, so it doesn't make sense to complain about it's appearance. It makes more sense to look at Google Hangouts, which replaces Google Voice, and if you do, you'll notice that Google Hangouts follows the same theme as the other Google services.

All Google apps are consistent in use of color. They all follow the same theme and pull their colors from the same color palette.
 
I see your point and generally agree, like you said this is what I meant - "you could make the argument that the dialer app and the people app should look more alike, perhaps."

Also, as much as Google would like it to go away, Voice is very popular and I use it daily. Google have in fact been promising updates and integration with Hangouts/SMS.
 
Google Voice is gone ? I use it daily and rely on it for voice-mails.

Since I have a Nexus phone, and run on Straight Talk, I don't have a carrier supplied Voice Mail app, so I use Google Voice for all my missed phone calls that go to voice-mail, which are extremely important. How else do people get their voice-mail messages without Google Voice ?
 
I also use Google Voice for texting and save the $10/m ripoff that Verizon would charge. Apple has had sms integration in iMessage forever, how hard can it be for Google to do so in Hangouts/Voice ?!

And yes, nothing beats GV for voicemail/forwarding etc. Google once again is trying very hard to push people to hangouts and ignoring voice.

Google Voice (the service) still exists, however the Google Voice app has stopped being updated (Last update was in April) and the functionality has been merged with Google Hangouts. From my understanding, the purpose of Google Hangouts is to encompass the functionality of both Google Voice and Google Talk into a single, tightly integrated experience.

So do I install this Hangouts app, and use that instead of Google Voice for voice mails and texts ? Does Hangouts replace the Messaging app ?

They *promised* to merge the *some* of functionality at some point, but for now they are completely separate. Hangouts does replace Google Talk. Voice hasn't been updated in years (the one in April was minor and meaningless).

Voice gives you a phone number, voicemail etc. Hangouts doesn't claim it will ever do that. Most it'll do is have sms integration and that'll be huge. But it isn't intended for phone features like call forwarding, VM etc.

Okay, that made me really nervous about the price tag for this phone. I really hope it stays between $299 and $349. Its gonna suck a lot if its gets priced at $500+ or something.

Aren't those specs even with a Note 3, which is $700 off contract? This is weird that Google would seemingly abandon the pricing scheme they were using for the Nexus 4. I thought it was successful.
 
Google is willing to take a loss on the Nexus phones which is how they were able to sell them for so cheap last time.

This happens every year, the rumor mill hypes up the specs to godlike levels and when it's released it's somewhere more back to Earth. I'd take those rumors with a grain of salt.

I agree, but keep in mind the Nexus phones are always pretty close to top of the line at release, and sold crazy cheap @ $349. Thing is their release time in Fall, is quickly overshadowed by the new next gen phones shown at the big trade show in January. So the Nexus phone is typically top of the line, for like 4 months, then the next gen Android's come out in the new year, and are better spec'd.

The Nexus 4 was better spec'd than last years Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, same with this year, the Nexus 5 will be better spec'd than the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, but soon the Galaxy S5 will be revealed in Feb / March and kill the N5
 
'Kill' maybe in terms of specs but not in daily use. The only issue people have with Nexii in general is they tend to have poor cameras and bad battery life compared to other flagships. But they do get updates and because of that generally manage to hold their own.

If true, I don't see Google selling these phones for $300 - $350. Even then this phone is going to be an eye popper with those specs. Will give little reason to go with a Note3, slightly larger battery and screen size.

I still think, LG G2, lesser camera and battery.
