Nexus-Five thread

Considering the Nexus 4 came out in November of 2012. I could see the Nexus 5 come out around the same time.

Good point. But it seemed like each new nexus phone release was on an 11 month schedule, not full year ?

HTC Nexus-One = January 2010
Samsung Nexus-S = December 2010
Samsung Galaxy Nexus = Late November 2011
LG Nexus 4 = Early November
LG Nexus-Five = Late October ?
Asus Nexus 6 = October 2014
Asus Nexus-Seven = September 2015

Everyone I know has cracked glass backs from mundane things. A Phandroid editor had his crack in the car, droidlife had theirs crack setting it on a cold counter, etc, etc

That is horrible build quality. I'll take a plastic phone over something that can't handle gentle use any day. Especially since I tend to hold on to phones until they're on their last legs.

My Nexus 4 is sitting on kitchen counter, unusable again, due to cracking for second time, and I refuse to pay for a second repair, for $199 can get a brand new 8GB version, where the glass replacement runs around $125.

First time I dropped it on tile floor, from like 3 feet, cracked the glass, made phone unusable to the touch, could still see it turn on, but couldn't use it. I have dropped a million other Android phones in a similar fashion, and nothing happened to them, except a dent / scratch.

I just dropped it again, while sitting on a lawn chair at my birthday party, it's a low sitting chair, close to the ground, it fell like 2 feet, cracked the glass again in a different way, now the phone won't get past the lock screen.

Now I am back to my old HTC One X, which has fallen down the stairs before, and flew across the room like a hockey puck a few times, and it still works.

My nexus 4 overheats and has a discolored orange dot in the top left of the screen. Also charger malfunction destroyed the USB port on it. I'm using a wireless charger but idk if I'll buy the nexus 5 because of this.

My Galaxy S is still defect free after going on nearly three years of daily service, despite the "cheap plasticky back" that all those tech site reviewers cry about on their Samsung reviews.

Why didnt you get a case for your phone the first time you cracked it :confused:

I have the Ringke Fusion case on mine and have dropped it several time from above 4 feet.
The last time it landed flat on its face and sounded like a brick hit the floor but to my amazement it was fine.

Good find :). So just a month away, October 14th ? Makes sense with all the leaks lately, seems like it should be pretty close.

This Nexus 5 body material, looks near identical to that of last years HTC One X, with full Polycarbonate body shell, with matte soft touch finish. And that's not a bad thing, I think the One X was the best looking Android of 2012, and was a very tough phone, could handle heavy abuse, I know, I have two One X's, and my Black X and the leaked N5 FCC pictures, the two phones looks like the same materials, which is much better than the glass construction on the Nexus 4.

I still think my international HTC One X in white color, is one of the better built Android phones I ever owned. It's a sleek looking design, and surprisingly tough, and feels great in the hand. And from the early leaks, the Nexus 5 looks very similar to the matte black One X build, which is great, and make it the best looking Nexus phone to date.

Most tech sites keep repeating Oct 14th as the Google event for Android 4.4 Kit Kat and the Nexus 5 reveal, with the phone going on sale shortly after that date.

But Spigen did say this officially regarding the upcoming Nexus 5 "Due to recent leaks we’re anticipating a Nexus 5 announcement shortly so we’ve put up place-holder listings in advance... 10/31 is just an estimated date that we’ve decided upon since we believe the Nexus 5 will be announced early October."

So two things tell me we are getting the Nexus 5 soon, next month. #1 the Nexus 4 is sold out on the Play Store and not coming back in stock, and #2 rumors up the wazzo about a Google event on Oct. 14th from every tech site out there lately.

I just want this thing to hurry up and release so I can finally invest in a decent off-contract phone that I actually afford and isn't over 2 years old (I hesitated with the $199 Nexus 4, and I'm still kicking myself for it). I want to get off of Virgin Mobile, I don't want to get on-contract to do it.

Totally agree, I dropped my old Nexus 4 last week, cracked the glass, now I am on my HTC One X again. For $199 was about to pull the trigger on another Nexus 4, but they gone now. Please hurry up Nexus 5, and don't be over $400.

I am looking to move to Android and I am seriously considering the GS4. I like the SD slot and the removable battery in addition to what is already a great set of features.

I have hesitated because I am in it for the long haul.

This Nexus 5 looks to be very close to the G2, which is also a great choice.

I guess I missed out on this whole nexus business, could someone give me a moron version of what is so great for an average non-developer in having a "Nexus" phone over any other phone especially if a non-nexus phone is rooted? (I realize that the S4 has not been cracked yet, just thinking ahead)

It comes fully unlocked, with the latest stock android version (i.e. no bloatware), and is first in line to get official updates (i.e. no waiting for Samsung, then the carrier, to create and approve new updates).

Someone more motivated than me can paste the link which highlighted two variants that went through the FCC, one which apparently covered GSM plus Sprint, the other which covered Verizon.

But that is not truly official by any means, just rumors speculating. The Nexus 5 will be on;

AT&T + T-Mobile + International GSM networks = 100%
Sprint = 50/50, but most likely yes
Verizon = ?

All depends if the rumors are true, regarding the 7 different radio bands going into the N5, supporting GSM and CDMA variants.

I thought that was a mistake?

They pushed through some change they made for VZW's G2 before it was released...but accidentally used pics of a Nexus 5.

Last I saw, the CDMA variant that they pushed through supported Sprint's LTE bands only...not band 13 which is what Verizon currently uses.
 
Fuck knows - in reality it's ALL rumor and speculation. Maybe I'll just close my eyes and wait for the release event :)
 
VZW will never get another Nexus phone. They don't want it and Google doesn't want it. AOSP doesn't even have CDMA support, and VZW is never going to allow quick updates or lack of bloatware on any phone they sell.

It's really fucked up how they care more about control and locking shit down more than money and people being happy. We all know they love money, but it seems being a control freak is more important.

I hate Verizon, but to be honest how much of % do we make up as customers ? Nothing, barely a blip on the radar. I bet majority of Verizon customers have zero clue what a bootloader is, or what being unlocked means, or having bloatware pre-installed. Most people buy a phone from Verizon, walk out of the store, and do nothing else with the phone, other than standard use.

Us tech geeks reading smartphone websites, and the [H], make up maybe 1% of sales.

They do love money, but the money isn't in niche stock Android devices like the Nexus phones (at least in Verizon's opinion and I sort of agree with it), it's in the phones that are highly marketed like the Galaxy line, iPhones, and HTC flagships. Plus Verizon obviously wants total control over everything on their network, including the software running on their devices.

Nexus phones go against their need for control and they aren't highly marketed. This, coupled with them not allowing phones on their network outside of their store (excluding dev phones), forces them to sell you the phone through their store (and 3rd parties) at $600+ full retail prices or $200+ on contract, despite that the exact same phone is available in the Play store for $300-$350 off contract for the unlocked/GSM version. This is exactly what happened with the Galaxy Nexus and it was absurd. It took one of the major incentives (cheap retail price) away from buying a Nexus phone.

So even if the Nexus 5 does become available for Verizon, it's almost guaranteed to NOT be available in the Play Store and cost $600+ through their store off contract, almost (but not totally) killing the appeal of buying a Nexus phone. :mad:
