Nexus 6 speculation

And another day passes...and Moto doesn't get me any tracking info.

I suppose I get to live with my Note 2 through XMas at this rate.

Mine came a day early but no one was home to sign for it so they did not deliver.

Ordered Cloud White 32gb from Motorola on 11/12 with original delivery estimate of Dec. 2.

It shipped on 11/22 and estimated delivery was 11/26 and low and behold it was on the truck this morning and they attempted to deliver it at 10:40 AM this morning.

I called in to have it held at a local FedEx location so I can pick it up on my way home from the office but they did not have it by the time I was by so I have to stop and get it tomorrow.

My original delivery estimate is tomorrow. The only way that will happen is if Motorola is so inept as to not notify me, and FedEx is inept enough for my shipment to not get scanned and hit my Delivery Manager.

so far I'm loving mine. I just ordered a Dbrand skin for the back. The phone's very slippery. Bright Orange!

I've been using my Nexus 6 for over a week now and have found that the battery life is really not that good at all. Screen on time has been around 4 hours or less depending on what you're doing. Watching Youtube videos really depletes the battery quickly. All the talk about encryption slowing the phone down is true. Things just take longer to launch. Couple that with the super high resolution display and you have a phone that just doesn't feel fast. My Nexus 5 running Android 5.0 seems twice as fast as the Nexus 6 while navigating around the OS or launching apps. I'm hoping that Google finds a solution for this. The last thing I wanted to mention is that the phone gets hot to the touch with simple tasks like browsing the web and a piece of the chrome "Nexus" lettering on the back of the phone already fell off.

I guess I'll chalk it up to early adopter pain and suffering!

My experience is complete opposite. I have NO slowdown at all. None. I can't believe how fast everything opens and closes. Where are you seeing slowdown? Today will be my third day out and about with it. Yesterday when I went to bed I had about fifty percent left on my battery. It's not going to be a problem for me at all.

I would be in this camp as well. I have not noticed any slowdowns with my cloud white. It runs fast and smooth. Battery life is questionable but I have only has it for a few days. SOT, for me, has been 4.5 hours at best.

Running all stock.

Camera is surprisingly good outdoors in good light. Much better than my OnePlus One. Indoors and low light similar to other smartphones as pictures are a mixed bag.

Size is large but I don't have an issue with it as i have owned the Note 3 and OnePlus One but no case on mine. Tempered glass with a Dbrand skin on the back as even a Spigen Slim case adds just enough extra width that it becomes too wide to me.

Screen is excellent but colors tend towards Samsung type rather than Nexus 5 or OnePlus One which are both more natural.

Its definitely a keeper for me based on my first few days of use. If you like a larger phone definitely take a look as I do expect the experience to get better as they fine tune software and has more than enough horsepower under the hood to be a great phone over the next year

Decrypt the phone. It is a click a button process with NRT. Feels like a zippy phone.

As far as aesthetic wear goes. All handsets have some form of it. There are people on XDA in the Note 4 forums annoyed about cracking cases and so on. C'est la vie. The Nexus lettering wearing off is minor, and most people run cases anyway.

Further, the first experimental kernels are already out to try and optimize battery life. Give it time and battery life will get better. Browsing H in Chrome I don't feel the device get hot at all further.

I just downloaded NRT and decrypted. I'll report back to see if the speed and battery life improve once I restore my account/apps.

The only app whose performance is stuttery and crappy is Dolphin Browser, and that is pprobably an optimization issue of some sort. All others are nice and smooth.

So I installed my stuff and man.... what a difference!! To all those guys that were claiming that their Nexus 6 felt fast and smooth have no idea the performance penalty software encryption was causing this phone. Without encryption this thing flies! It's basically the fastest smartphone I've ever used now. I could tell right away when I rebooted the phone and it was ready for use in less than a minute versus the several minutes it takes an encrypted Nexus 6 to start up. Skripka I owe you a beer bro! ;)

I have not noticed any slowdown in my nexus 6 so far after over a week of use. I am curious though, is there any real benefit to keeping encryption enabled on the phone?

It was more of a political statement then anything...unless you keep stuff on your phone that you don't want the law to ever see (or if you ever envision yourself being arrested and having incriminating evidence on your phone), I would keep it unecrypted and take the massive speed boost.

That doesn't entirely hold up. True, the risk of a data breach on your phone is pretty low, but it's not just police and the NSA you have to worry about -- it can be something as simple as preventing thieves from doing something with your phone if they get their hands on it. Go unencrypted if you like, but do know that you're leaving yourself a little more vulnerable.

Hate to break it to you...but one way or another, if thieves get their hands on your phone it is gone. Encrypting or unencrypted won't get it back. Further most thieves just want to wipe and flip the device, they don't care about your mobile porn collection, unless you're an AAA-list celeb, and if you are odds are they already guessed correctly on "passw0rd1" on your iCloud.

Oh, I'm not saying that the thieves will return your phone... you just don't want them grabbing your contacts and purchase receipts to figure out where you (and your friends) live, or whether you have valuable things to steal. I'm not arguing that hard for encryption given the speed hit on the Nexus 6, but I say it's better to leave crooks with no choice but to wipe the device than to let them poke around in your stuff.

So anyone have a tempered glass screen protector installed? Over on XDA lots of problems because the phones screen is slightly curved and the protectors dont line up or stay on.

Also @stryderxx, I have some questions for you.
I read that after you unencrypt the phone if it gets a software update that you have to unencrypt again? Isn't this going to be a pain?

I read that as well. TBH I want encryption enabled but the performance penalty is just way to high with software based encryption. If Google doesn't figure out how to resolve this issue I'll continue to unencrypt my N6 manually.

That seems a little far-fetched to me, encrypted storage is just a default.

I have encryption enabled on my Nexus5 and you'd be hard-pressed to notice it without running benchmarks.

I got my Nexus 6 as well. Even though it's roughly the same size as the iPhone 6 Plus this thing actually feels bigger in the hand. It truly is massive! Feels more like a tablet. So far it's been OK. I loaded it up with a few games and apps, charged it to 100% and used it the entire day (took it off the charger at 7am). It's now 8:11PM (EST) and the battery is at 12%. Based on this I'd say the battery is no better or worst then any other smartphone I've used in the past.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. So with encryption enabled I was getting below average battery life on my N6. Now with encryption disabled things are a lot different. I took my N6 off the charger at 6am this morning. It is now 8:15PM (EST) and I have almost 40% battery remaining. That's quite an improvement!!!

Just to be clear here, having decrypted the phone, presumably that would A. void the return policy and B. stop OTA updates from coming through? Both my devices have yet to arrive, and I'm kinda torn as to whether or not I decrypt them primarily because I may return one/both if they aren't to our liking. If I did decrypt, it sounds like we would lose the OTA function (i.e. would need to reflash the phone once the update is posted online). I really wish Google made encryption optional....

Highly unlikely it will void the warranty since you can just reimage to restore back to factory default. And, I don't think it'll affect OTA since other Nexus devices without encryption enabled as default got the Lollilop update without issue. Wouldn't be surprised if Google made encryption a toggable option in future updates which would make the most sense.

Anybody buy the Sprint phone from Best Buy and put a Verizon SIM in it? I'm getting so impatient that I am getting ready to jump on it...

Lovin it
heres a better shot that shows the orange better

No reason it shouldn't work as long as it's unlocked (which it should be). All US carrier variants are the exact same hardware from what I've read.

...except ATT which is sim locked and has slightly different firmware.

Wtf are you talking about?

You can reflash to stock for the return. And yes, you have to reflash every time there is an OTA because it will reset your phone. I have no slowdown on my phone after two weeks and I'm not going to take the encryption off.

Wtf are you talking about?

I wanted to understand the effects of decrypting the phone, in terms of voiding my return policy and removing the ability for the phone to recieve OTA updates. I wish Google just made it optional as part of the stock rom.

Didn't realize I was unclear...

The only way you will receive future OTAs is if you have the stock ROM and are unrooted. You use to be able to receive the OTA while being rooted
