Now that the next generation cards are no longer next generation, what's next? DLI?

take it easy and just enjoy what we have now. There aren't really any new games being forcasted so why worry about next generation cards ?

the only thing that i can foresee in the future is dual-core GPU graphics cards. we already have PCI-E and DDR2, so i really don't see much else.

i think the question that should be asked is. whats the next big thing in 3d engine technology thats coming down the pipe that current cards DONT support yet?

Unreal 3.0? Btw, any chance someone can post some screens of it in action? It'll inspire us to come up with some next-gen ideas.

:p directx 10 perhaps?

most likely: intel will start making actual graphics cards... it'll still be the same intel extreme graphics 2 and intel graphics 900 or whatever they're doing now  just in a card.

when will see clothes that go on the character, instead of being the character?
does that make sense?

If it only runs at 320x240 resolution with minimum details and 16-bit colour on an Ultra, I'll be a bit cheesed off! It does look good, but I'm wary given how the requirements for Doom3 sneaked up over the development cycle.

Good point.. by the time the game on this engine comes out, it'll prolly require 6800 SLI at a minimum, or a new gen 32 pipe videocard :D

I have afeeling we'll see a point of deminishing returns with pipelines on graphics cards.

Of course i always expect to see a faster core speed and memory speed aswell as more memory.

I also wouldn't be surprised if we begin to allocate a lot more space for graphics cards seeing as they'll need larger coolers or a hairdryer on them.

or better cooling tech of some sort. it's only a matter of time before they become liquid-cooled using some substance that doesn't need replacement ( until after the warranty runs out) and is highly effective.

Am I missing something here? Doom 3 looks better than that. Not that those pics aren't excellent though.

look around you.

that's how detailed.

Heh, that's great. Load up a couple of games from 2-3 years ago. Notice how crappy they look. Remember when you thought they were practically photo-realistic? Some day, we'll be talking about how crappy Unreal 3 graphics are.

Interesting ?. I haven't heard anything on the development of clothes in graphics. I don't think the resources needed make a big enough difference to justify not using those same resources in the environment and in better character models.

Well, there is an exponentially higher polygon count in some of those pictures than you'll ever see in Doom3. I believe it was in the millions for that flyby scene of that courtyard with the angel statue fountain thing. In real time. So, this is going to outdo doom3 by far. Maybe not the Doom3 engine but the game itself...

This, for instance.

Try to find a screenshot of Doom3 that even begins to come close to the detail and beauty of that. It looks like a photograph.

yea, except for the straight lines on supposed-to-be-rounded objects (namely the arc above the doors.) the windows are exactly the same, except mirrored. and the lighting looks way too fake. its not as 'crisp' as natural lighting is. but other than that, yea, it looks like a pic.

I have a hunch my 256mb ram and integrated video card might not be able to handel that game ;)

But hey my graduation money will at least go to something usefull like a "School Only Comp"(at least I will tell my parents its school only ;))

That would be a next generation gaming engine, one which we won't see this year.

64 pipes might be over kill there is a point of diminishing returns.

Last May, BeyondUnreal interviewed Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, and asked him about UE3:

TS: Well, we are aiming at the kind of PC that we think will be mainstream in 2006. We will also be able to scale it down. Basically DirectX 9 cards will be minimum spec, so any DirectX 9 shipping today will be capable of running our game, but probably at reduced detail. If you only have a 256 meg video card you will be running the game one step down, whereas if you have a video card with a gig of memory then you'll be able to see the game at full detail.

BU: You are talking about dropping detail levels, what about a 3.2[GHz] or something similar?

TS: That will kind of be a low end system for our game if you look what's going to happen two years out. The technology is very scalable and will run a factor of twenty more detail on the highest end PCs currently available.

i serously doubt TS will be able to make his prediction stick. Hardware is too fluid and he has to adapt to what will be avalailable then, not vice versa ;)
