I recently bought a Nexstar 3 ide enclosure to use with a spare 80 WD drive I have. its a WD800 7200rpm model. Nothing fancy.

No matter how I set the jumper, I can't seem to get windows to recognize the drive when hooked to the enlosure. It works fine when I hook it directly to the computer, and the USB enclosure is recognized by windows by itself. I don't have any other drives to test out, and my next guess is to try a different cable inside the enclosure.

Has anybody else had any issues with the Vantec Nexstars? I was under the impression from reading about them that they are good units. This is the first time one of these enclosures hasn't "just worked" for me, and I'm almost out of troubleshooting ideas.

On the WD drive, for the jumper setting, do you have it set for master? Sometimes there is a 'single' jumper setting.
I have 2 of the Nexstars and was messing with an older 6.4gb and had to use the 'single'
jumper setting to get it recognized.

Yeah, I've tried every single jumper setting on the damn thing... I replaced the cable inside it too. I'm just going to have to try a different drive.

I'll probably swap it back into the PC since my 160gb is starting to throw up data loss errors something fierce, it's also starting to dissappear and reappear after reboots. I'll just have to get another seagate 300 sata drive instead.
 
I have two of these enclosures. I do remeber on one of them I had to use the drive without any jumper at all for some reason even though the drive spec calls for a jumper on the drive.

WD drives setting for a single master is no jumper at all
 
I have a nexstar and it is a POS. It will eat drives if you use the firewire port, and it gets very hot. I'm not surprised you're having problems.
 
Hmmm, the plot thickens

I've tried all the jumper and no jumper settings the drive has. Another thing I failed to mention is that it will hang my system at startup for no agood reason as well.

I'm just going to exchange this one for a different brand. I'm going with the venus DS3. It's black and has an 80mm fan inside.
