how would i use newsgroups i heard it from a friend but have no idea how, like what programs to use or what search engines to use and how would i get the files

yea i am a complete noob

this subject is very much like any P2P question here
and straddles the line of what is allowed and what is not allowed
like many technologies or services it can be employed legally or illegally

any facet of this subject that is illegal needs to be left "unsaid"

Newsgroups...I used to live on newsgroups before forums such as this one came along. Back in the day of my Voodoo3 owership, I used to read and post at alt.3dfx.products.voodoo3 or something like that.

Oh yeah, then there was the Packard Bell newsgroup. God I loved that one. I upgraded my old ass P133 to a K6-2 400 with a powerleap adapter with info and help from that newsgroup...just for Quake2 on my VoodooGraphics card.

One thing I like about them was how even tho there were no moderators, it was still a place where cival and clean discussions could take place. Good old school morals. I think it was because using them was more difficult than just opening a browser.

I find that XNews is the best free newsgroup reader.
One thing I like about them was how even tho there were no moderators, it was still a place where cival and clean discussions could take place. Good old school morals. I think it was because using them was more difficult than just opening a browser.

OMG remember the days of BBS systems in ANSI? Damn I'm showing my age now.

i have the program and know some stuff but when i try to get into the verizion group news.verizon.net
as a server nothin happens

can someone help me

I didn't get into the old BBS systems too much. I messed around with them on my old Tandy TRS-80 Model 100. All the BBS were long distance calls for me, so I didn't use them to much. I did get into Quantum online with my Commodore 64. Quantum later became AOL.
 
i still need help cause when i use new bin pro and put verizion as my server nothin happens can some give me step by step
 
I use Opera's Newsgroup feature that is part of M2 (M2=Opera's Mail Program). I also check my RSS news feeds in Opera. I used to use Outlook Express, but I gave that up.
 
here's an exemple: host: news1.sympatico.ca
username: _________ Pass:__________ (from your ISP)

Some ISP limit access to certain stuff
