I know this has been discussed before, but what is the reliablility of the newegg refurb mb's. I need to replace an intel 865 mb, and id really like the asus p4p800se, but i just cant spend $93 for a new one, but the refurb is $51. Im not concerned with the accesories, though the backplate would be nice.

basically, is it worth buying a refurb, or should i just go with an affordable new board? i will likely do some overclocking to push my 3.0c

Over the past few years I have purchased at least 6 refurb boards. All have worked great out of the box. For the price you can't beat them. If you get an Asus and it doesn't have a backplate, just email support and they'll send you one. They did that for me on a refurb that didn't have a backplate in the box.

do you ever play the lottery? :) While i have never purchased any refurbs from Newegg - I have heard several positve experiences, but have also seen some negative experiences. Someone posted a picture of a video card that had a loose capacitor taped to the back of the (nonworking) card. A good friend just recently bought a refurb video card from newegg and it seemed to work fine but it would lock up with graphical corruption after exiting games. So buy with caution - and take note of their statement:

Newegg.com does not test any product, including refurbished items. Refurbished components are therefore only tested by the original manufacturer. Due to the varying quality of manufacturer testing, YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING REFURBISHED PRODUCTS.

I've bought refurbed vid cards and they were fine. Haven't tried the mobo's yet, but I've heard both good and bad. Another route would be to try buying used in the FS/FT forums. Usually, you know exactly what you're getting that way.

It has been speculated that refurbs are simply returned goods that did not do what the buyer intended to do with them...

Overclock the snot out of them...

So the board goes back to newegg...

yeah ive heard all great things from people about the refurb video cards on newegg, but never the motherboards (no one i persomally know has gotten one anyway) i figure it might be worth the crapshoot to get a board for $51, anythings gotta be better than this intel mb that lacks features

I ordered a Gigabyte GeForce 6200 about six monts refurbed from Newegg, haven't had any problems with it. Running with a pipeline unlocked and overclocked. Came in the box with all acessories. However, I ordered an AOpen i915GMm-HFS refurbed from Newegg, came in a brown box with no acessories, and the board wouldn't even post. No beeps or anything. So YMMV.

well crap, now they are out of the refurbs. maybe i should just shell out the cash for a new one. the p4p800se is the board id really be happier with. im also slightly worried about refurb even with the great things ive heard, because this system has had so many problems from the get go.

i'll flip a coin :)

I've only gottem 1 refurb mobo from them and it works perfectly. I've also bought refurb'ed hard drives, memory, video cards, and optical drives and I've NEVER had a refurb'ed item go bad! They're all in friends' and relatives' computers that I built for them and anytime ANYTHING goes wrong with them, I hear about! :p Newegg rocks!

went ahead and got the refurb, hopefully it works well, newegg said the refurbs are items sent to them by the manufactuer, and id find it hard to believe that asus would send out a refurb motherboard that hadnt been tested and verified.

I've bought many refubs from the Egg over the years and never had a problem with them. Most of my folding farm is running on refurbed boards.

So far, I've purchased several refurbished items, including motherboards, from Newegg.

All of them work fine, except that I was sent a Gigabyte GA-7DX+ motherboard that wasn't stable with a 133 MHz bus speed CPU. While I could have returned it, I didn't bother, since the board was fine otherwise, and I simply dumped an older Athlon 1 GHz CPU in it. It's running quite nicely at this time, as my FTP server.

I was just going to make a post about this ...
just recieved my refurb board A8N premium from newegg.

The only thing I got was the board :(
I know someone else that bought this refurb and got everything with it. So if I spent 50$ I could of gotten like 5 sata cables and power plugs and other misc cables; driver discs; and manuals.

I'm probably going to return the board; I thought I was going to save some money buying refurb but instead I ended up losing ie all that stuff costs over 50$. And let alone the resale value if I ever decided to sell the board would go way down without any manual/box/cables etc ...

It's too bad I have been waiting to put this system together for a week or so.

Not sure exactly what I am going to do. I dont really want to spend 160$ on a mb.

Do you suffer alot of speed degrade if you run SATA II drives on sata I mb?
I just bought 2 new sata II hitachi drives.

Newegg boards are guarenteed to come with nothing but the board. If you get the accessories then you are ahead of the game. But you shouldn't buy one planning on getting everything that came in the box. I believe ASUS will sell you the complete accessory kit for $25 + some shipping if you call them.

yeah, i dont expect any accesories. i really only need the backplate, and as someone said, if you email asus they'll send you one. i dont need the cables, since all my drives came with cables, and any drivers i need i can download from asus's site. and manuals, who reads manuals

ya I probably shouldnt of ordered a refurb if I wanted the back plate, and cables.

my drives came oem so no cables.

i do have one question, when you email asus requesting a backplate, do you just say you bought a refurb and need one, or do you pretend you "misplaced" it

not sure but I just got quoted 35$ for the accessories for the a8n prem (she said the premium has more so it costs more.

So technically the mb was 109 and then with 35$ accessories its 144$. Let alone I didnt even test if the board works yet.

I may just sent it back and get some cheap mb.

there is an Ebay seller that specializes in Asus parts.
Let me see if I can find him again....

Edit....sorry that guy is now listed as a former Ebay seller.

both.may be you "misplaced" it will better.the cs of asus doesn't care which kind of mobo you buy,new or refur

A "refurbished" item can be a result of various situations; a customer returned the item because they changed their minds, it was missing an accessory, or it was the wrong color. In any case, all items are tested and repackaged by the manufacturers themselves for resale at a discounted 30-60% off the retail price. :D

Newegg and refurb is a big NONO. Newegg refurbs are just defective products newegg has received back from people they've sold the product too. Newegg and the product manufacturer don't test these products at all once they receive them back to sell as refurbs. I would never buy a newegg refurb product. The ONLY refurb products I would buy would be directly from the manufacturer where they have a stated implicit guarantee that the thing will at least turn on...

Have you ever bought one? Did you read the other posts in this thread? If you need something cheap then Newegg refurbs can be a great way to go. If you don't think so then please don't shop that section and make it easier for the rest of us to find good deals. I guess the 7 running motherboards I have right now that were newegg rufurbs were from 7 morons who couldn't install a motherboard correctly so they sent them back.

I'm going to buy a lottery ticket today since my luck is that good. ;)

I guess I will too, as I am 5 for 5 now with refurb boards. The last two were AWESOME.

To the OP: I just installed the newegg refurb P4P800SE I got today and it works great. $50 for this board is a smokin deal. I am going to bed now, but with just a few tries, I got my 2.53ES to 3.15, and I bet it will go higher. I say do it. Oh, and remember that the P4P800SE has both 20 pin and 4 pin power connectors. My old board only had a 20 pin, and when I first hooked up the new board, it wouldn't post. I thought that my refurb luck had finally run out. But alas, I broke out the pdf and found that the 4 pin connector is not optional(first time I've ever had to use the 4 pin). I wasn't even sure if my ps had one, but sure enough, I had the 4 pin connector tucked away and hiding. Hooked it up and away we went :D

I got a Newegg refurb'ed Biostar NF2 mobo last year. I'm still using it.

Newegg specifically says NOT to expect to get any accesories with a refurb product.

I'm pretty sure you can exchange it if it's DOA.

my board in my sigs refurbed from the egg

my old gigabyte ga-8ipe1000 pro-g was refurbed from the egg

just as good as new :)

The refurb products are returns form the manufacturers that NewEgg can not sell as new. It works like this. Jethro buys a "whizbang ultra 8748xx" board, doesn't work for Jethro. Jethro RMA's it to the egg, and the egg sends him a new one. NewEgg then sends Jethro's board, along with a bunch of other boards to the maker. When they come back, they are no longer "new" and can not be sold as such.
From time to time, companies will offer NewEgg a shipment of repaird parts that they can not sell as new either, everyone is happy.
Every refurb part I have bought from newegg has been in perfect working order, and many are the complete retail package. Not always, but most of the time. If the refurb product is bad, they'll take care of you - ship out another one if they have it or credit you if not. No, they dont' test anything they get back - but they don't sell "refurb" as the part Jethro couldn't get working prior to sending it back to the manufacturerererer :D
I'm a cheap bastard, so I buy refurb from time to time, but not everyone is and doesn't need to - :)

Peace,
Tim

just got my board in from newegg, thing looks brand new, every accesory the new one comes with, this came with, ill have to wait till tomorrow to test it.

Everything refurbed I've gotten from newegg has worked perfectly. I wouldn't hesitate if you needed something cheap.

I've done pretty well with refurb SCSIs so far. Actually, the failure rate has been better than new ATA drives for me.
Refurb cards that aren't vid cards don't bother me a bit. Refurb vid cards, performance ram, procs & mobos I worry about them having been returned for being crap overclockers.

I've gotten refurbed video cards that OC like mad. 6600 vanilla that went from 300mhz stock to 550mhz on the core ;).

all my refurbs from newegg has performed as new.
you still have 15 days to return items anyway,if they are actually defective.
but mostly its peeps buying incorrect hardware.

just to update, this refurb board seems to look and run good as new, had all the accesories, and i ran prime95 for 24hrs with 0 errors. definately will look at newegg refurbs next time i need something
