Newegg Plextor M3 Pro $259.99

Over $1/GB seems really high compared to some of the recent 256 GB SSD deals.

Man I really want one of these! If it were only $200...... Time to sell my Sandisk Extreme

This isn't as good of a deal as the $200 Samsung 830 256GB from last week. Great drive, price is just too high.

Considering that the Crucial M4 & Samsung 830 have been well under 200 this isnt a hot deal at all.. it may be a better drive, but not enough better to pay much of a premium.

My Plextor is a bad bitch, I wouldn't consider another brand. That said, price is on the high side.

This is probably the best SSD you can buy, but not worth the money difference over a samsung 830, crucial m4, or sandisk extreme

What do you mean by "best"? Not being funny, just wondering what makes this SSD best (leaving out the price premium).

After reading the conclusion, then rereading it, I fail to understand what exactly would make this drive worth the price premium..

To me, the only advantage is the 5 year warranty, but the M3 itself has that, costs less, and to performs exactly the same..Sure, if you are a Mac user, then the power usage @ load is a bit better then the Samsung 830, but if you aren't, then I still dont see the advantage. I would take a Sandisk Extreme, and use the extra money toward something else.

I agree with everything you said except instead I'd pay the premium for an Intel 520 or just pay $40-$50 less than both and get a Kingston Hyper 3k or Samsung 830. Not seeing the awesomeness of this SSD other then warranty.

That said, it makes me wonder when the SSD's are coming out with the newer Marvell 88SS9187 controller? Or are they already out in newer SSD's, just not the Plextor M3 Pro (like Anand stated in the conclusion)?

I don't believe there are any SSD's out with the new Marvell controller yet. Shouldn't be too much longer, though.

I agree with everything YOU said (see what I did there?),except I wouldn't pay any price premium....I would either A)get the Samsung 830 (as you mentioned), or B)Stick with the Sandisk Extreme..it uses the same controller as the Intel 520, and 24nm toggle NAND, so it is a better deal to me then paying more for the "Intel" name..

Intel got passed up...the X25-Ms were outstanding and their newer drives are still great AFAIK, but they're losing the price war and there's little reason to choose them with such great competition available for less.

The drive in this thread is awesome; definitely one of the finest but as others have said $260 is too much of a premium to pay for a small boost in performance over the regular M3 that also carries a 5-year warranty (only difference being the firmware is tweaked even further in the Pro). I got my M3 for $200 (normally $240), my Samsung 830s for $200 and $190 (normally $250+) and haven't bitten on the $170/$180/$200 Crucial M4 because frankly I don't need any more 256GB SSDs. Waiting for 512GB and 1TB @ killer prices.

With the Samsung 830s only costing what they are, I think it'd be silly to pay $260, even if it is a Pro version.

QFT. This price getting posted as a [H]ot deal makes me even happier I snagged an 830 for $190.

Sandisk may be using the same controller but the performance seems to be different.

^ those numbers largely mean nothing in regards to real world performance. They are just used for marketing and advertising purposes.

Great ssd. You pay for the 5 year warranty the Plextor M3 has, where the 830 only has a 3 year. For someone who doesn't upgrade much, its a solid deal.

I love my M3. Has been a damn trooper ever since i installed it.

True. Those are the only numbers I could muster at the time of the posting. Not enough time in the day to find all the real world number tests as stated.
