So I just got all the parts for my new PC last night and after I put it all together I booted it up to install Vista on it. I got a 74GB WD Raptor drive, I figured it would be loud but WOW!! I mean this thing is chunking away like my coffee pot in the morning. Is it supposed to be that loud?

Ok I just wanted to make sure because I read that they are loud, but mine was an Open Box item so I thought maybe it was super loud and defective.

Sadly, the only reason I've yet to purchase a Raptor is because of sound output.

Oh, that and I can't justify spending ~$90 on 74 GB when I can get 500GB for almost the same amount. ;)

I never could have justified it before either but this was a computer that my parents decided to build for me so I went crazy. I honestly don't think that the modest speed increase is worth the noise that this thing makes. Although I haven't really tested it out completely yet.

^^^ I actually had one of those that was supposed to be delivered with my build, but at the last second I had to shave a couple things off that I didn't really "need." Next paycheck, and its on its way.

I have two, older and newer models, and they both kinda rumble. But, after working in a steel mill for 31 yrs., my loud and your loud, are probably very different animals. :D

I've had all flavors of Raptors for many years. I hate loud computers.

Key to success?

Buy a quality case (like an Antec P180B) and use the silicon hard drive mounts. Raptors are near silent in these cases.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

QFT. I can't hear my Raptor.
