Long time reader/lurker ;)

Been researching my upgrade for awhile on here. I contemplated going with the i5 then to the i7.

Here is what I finally came up with:

Intel I7 930 (Link)

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 (Link)

Crucial RealSSD C300 (Link)

Corsair Dominator 6gb (Link)

These Items to go with my ATI Radeon HD5850.

Thank you guys for all your expertise! couldn't have done it with out you!

Wouldn't have gone for the Dominator RAM. If you had gone with an alternative, you could have gotten enough cash for a HD 5870 :)

Also what PSU will you be using?

I already had the 5850 from a couple months back when my 8800gtx crapped out. I really struggled with the ram decision.

My PSU is an OCZ GameXstream that i've used since my last upgrade in '07. Do you think i'll have an issue with it? ahhhhh more money :)

Probably no overclocking. That OCZ GameXStream PSU is only good for 500W of power. So keep your power usage under 500W. That pretty much means limited overclocking.

Closer to 400W if it's been in use for 2 years with some regularity. Careful, OP.

Damn you guys!! :D

I guess a new PSU will be in order. It will probably have to wait a bit though, i've kinda tapped myself out.

What PSU do you recommend?

Maybe return the Dominator RAM for this RAM:
$165 - G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM

Scavenge $10 and get this PSU:
$100 - Antec Truepower New TP-650 650W PSU

Or spend another $20 for a tad more power:
$120 - Antec Truepower New TP750 Blue 750W PSU

heh, your next upgrade should be the PSU. ;)

LOL i know right! ;)

I might just have to take run to the local computer store and buy a new psu and not tell the wifey :D

It was already like pulling teeth to get the upgrade

So Do i call Newegg and see if it's been shipped first or wait and then send the stuff back?

Call them up, see if it's been shipped, and cancel the entire order and I can guarantee you we can easily fit in a quality PSU without sacrificing an ounce of performance by redoing that build slightly.

If it's been shipped, call them, ask them if they can waive the restocking fee since you're gonna buy the G.Skill RAM from them, return the Corsair, buy the G.Skill and buy the PSU.

Will do, thanks Danny! I appreciate all the advice for my newbieness.

Yeah to save us some time, here's the slightly modified setup:
$565 - Intel Core i7 930 CPU + Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard
$165 - G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$479 - Crucial SSD
$120 - Antec Truepower New TP750 Blue 750W PSU
---
Total: $1329 plus tax and shipping.

Takes advantage of the combo deal that shaves off $20 (dunno if you took advantage of it) and only costs you $10 more than your current planned setup. But you get a far better quality PSU.

Ok

Update:

Because i'm impatient I decided not to send back the ram, instead opting to keep them and add an Antec Quattro 1000.

Question I have on the ram is, should I have enabled the XMP profile in the bios?

Also, when I tried using their oc'ing tool I get the BSOD. Any clue?

Dude, your system does not need a 1000W PSU. Even the 750W PSU I recommended to you earlier was slight overkill.

What OCing tool? Gigabyte's? If so, don't use it. As much I like Gigabyte hardware, I still wouldn't trust any software that lets you auto-overclock the CPU from within the OS.

I know it doesn't need the 1000 watts but it was either a 500w Earthwatt from Frys or this one. /shrug

Yeah it was the gigabyte one. I'll delete it when I get off work.

I'll just roll with the stock settings for awhile. :)

Now what to do with my old stuff...since I cant post in the FS/FT i'll just put it here for S&Gs
EVGA 680i SLI (-AR)
E6600 (Never oc'd)
8 gigs DDR2-800
Plextor DVD-R/RW(IDE)
Misc. 16x DVD (IDE)
OCZ 700w PSU

If anyone is interested PM me I guess.
