So my current server, which is finally physically built but not set up yet has the following guts:
Phenom II X6 1100T
ASRock 890GX Pro3
16GB GSkill F3-10666CL9D
Recently, I've come across a place that liquidates server-grade hardware. I know it is a little older (Socket 771), but I think it would still be better as a server, and I can get a pretty good deal on the following:
CPUs
2x Xeon E5440 - $100
2x Xeon E5462 - $65
2x Xeon L5430 - $40
Motherboards
Intel Server Board S5000PSL w/ 2x QUAD CORE 2.33GHz XEON CPU - $100
SuperMicro X7DBI+ - $80
SuperMicro X7DWN+ - $35
SuperMicro X7DBE+ - $75
RAM
16GB (4x4GB) PC2-5300 ECC FBDIMM - $90
The main purpose of the server is for media distribution, plus backup/storage of the other machines in the house. I also envision doing some virtual machines. Currently, Fedora or CentOS was planned on being used, along with MDADM software RAID. That decision was made based on the fact that I didn't have ECC RAM for ZFS. If I got some combination of the above, I would probably run ZFS.
Am I crazy for not considering this? I think it would most definitely be an upgrade. And do you guys have any preferences in the above listed hardware? I was really contemplating the L5430 and giving preference to them due to them being 50W. My single 1100T currently is at 125W. Storage is 9x1.5TB hard drives in a (planned) RAID6 (RAIDZ2 if ZFS), with a small 32GB SSD as the system/root drive.
