New to BC2, any pointers?

So I haven't played a shooter seriously since CS:S and tried to like COD but gave up after playing mw2 for a few hours.

Yesterday I bought bc2 (yeah like more than a year late to the party!) and started playing it and quickly realized it's nothing like cs or cod being more realistic and less arcade-y. I watched this video: http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/bat...2010/02/23/how-to-not-be-a-noob-in-bfbc2.aspx and it seems to be really helpful but do you guys have any other pointers for me?

Don't watch your Kill to Death ratio, just play and have fun and try to win. Killing will come as you gain experience so don't be afraid to die..especially in Rush mode.

Try not to feel like you have to do everything on your own, find your niche at what your good at and stick with it. And always try to be around another teammate because there is strength in numbers.

This will sound strange but listen to the game it can help you a lot, example your on the US team and you are capping a flag but you hear someone talking Russian that usually means your not alone and they are very close.

Also don't get frustrated with it, you are going to playing against people that have several hundred hours in the game and know the game inside and out.

Good luck out, who knows maybe our paths will cross on the Battlefield

like QcGuy said, just play the game and have fun, you will learn as you play. the hard part is dealing with the bullet drop over long range but once you get that down the game becomes easier and easier as you unlock more weapons, and as much as people try to say the default weapons suck and blah blah blah.. actually the defaults for some of the classes are better then the upgrade weapons.

Start out as engineer, its the easiest way to rack up points. Play on maps like Atacama Desert and Arica Harbor and ride along in a tank. Doing this will allow you to unlock the classless guns. You can then use those guns with any class to unlock better class-specific guns.

Always stick to cover!!!! I had never played a BF game in my life and played mostly Unreal. Right now I'm LVL36 and my kdr is only a little above 1. This is because when I first started playing the game I didnt know any better and just ran around like a moron and started with a kdr of about .4. I consistantly finish rounds with a 1.5-2 kdr now.

Play one map at a time. The biggest part is knowing the maps and the choke points and exploiting them. Dont try to learn all the maps at once.

Dont get frustrated when other people are killing you. They've already unlocked all the guns and have learned all the maps. This will come in time.

Other than that just be aware of your surroundings. Each class has their specific perks to help team mates. Use them.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PRESS Q WHENEVER YOU SEE AN ENEMY!!!!!

Most of those things are total n00b moves.

if you keep dieing in spawn, spawn somewhere else....... and learn to throw a grenade.

find a good clan server and stick with it.

This is a big key to having fun. Find a server that doesn't lag and almost always has admins on to deal with hackers and any idiots. The only thing is depending on the map rotation you may get sick of the maps.

Magnum ammo will be your enemy for a while when you start off. Yes it does suck but as you keep playing and getting unlocks it will get better.

A great way to level in the beginning is to use your classes abilities. Once you unlock the medkit/defib/ammo/engi impact wrench/motion mines you can rack up a ton of points by using them. Not only are you getting points but you are actually helping out by using them. Its really a win/win.

If you can find a squad that actually works together it makes the game 100% more enjoyable. Most of the time I play I just ending up using my squad as spawn points because they happen to be complete idiots but those few times where everyone works as a team are just awesome.

DUCK MUTHERFUCKER

seriously you get your head shot off every 3 seconds in this game if you are not ducking behind cover.

Thanks for the tips so far guys, I seem to do a lil better w/ the engineer like mentioned. I'm also getting pwned a LOT lol.

What is the best game type to rack up points? It's clearly not squad DM.

every class has its own method of getting points. medic you get +50 for every person you revive. engineer you get +30 for tank damage, +100 for destroying it, +50 per person in it, then +30 for double kill if it has 2 people. everything you do to help your team or squad accumulate points. If you kill someone while parachuting down, you get +50 for the kill and I think +30 or +50 for a parachute kill. I got banned from a server because I blew a guy with the gustav while parachuting down in cold war.

learn the maps asap.

when playing engineer or assault and encountering enemies firing from a building, learn to quickly switch to either your bazooka (engineer) or grenade launcher (assault) and fire it at them.. nothing beats blowing off the side of a building and killing some douchebag who was camping in it.

oh, it very much is squad dm. other game modes sometimes you are lucky to get a hundred points. for sqdm it is much easier to collect in the 1k range + any bonuses. That assumes you can kill. if not, then engi + repair in one of the other modes might work better. or medic, although they are a pain to play without paddles, health kits or decent weapons.

When you get around to playing recon, hold mouse1 (or whatever your shoot button is) when you shoot. You'll stay scoped in and you can get a feel for the bullet drop rather than shooting over and over and guessing where you're hitting.

Also, if you want a lot of points as an engineer, find a 1000 ticket heavy metal conquest server. Lots of vehicles, large play area so people aren't clustered into one small spot, you should be able to pull some decent repair/vehicle damage/destroy points on that.

do you guys have any other pointers for me?

Medic is far and away the easiest class to accrue points with, and very forgiving to level up with. The main reason is because of the medic's health kits and defibs, both of which you will unlock extremely quickly, within your first couple hours of play. Throw healthkits at hurt team members, or throw them down where your team is standing and fighting at a battle line. Rez members of your team for +50 points, +80 if they are in your squad. Your Defibs work through walls and objects if the body is close enough. Medics also use the LMG, which has 100 rounds per clip and is a very forgiving newbie weapon.

Don't hold the fire button down. Tap fire otherwise you will not hit anything. Unless you can physically poke your opponent with the barrel of your weapon, you probably shouldn't be spraying.

Don't play "Hardcore". It's the opposite of hardcore, and is an incredibly imbalanced game mode. If you want to actually get GOOD at the game, play Normal.

Play Conquest or Rush. Conquest is the most balanced game mode. The other modes besides these two are vastly inferior for point-gain purposes.

Due to the way this game carries teams over from round to round, you will very frequently come into a server where you will placed on a team that is getting steamrolled over and over again. Don't bother to stay in these servers, just find a different one. Same thing if you end up in a server with a "hacker" on the other team. Instead of sitting there and taking the abuse, just immediately find a different server. It's really easy, yet most people seem to be masochists and would rather sit there and complain for 13 rounds.

Pick up random kits you find on the ground from classes you are interested in trying. The perks, weapons, and bonuses you get for leveling up are attached to the kits, (I think... suddenly don't remember for sure) so when you pick up a level 50 player's kit, you're suddenly playing with all the same advantages he gets on that kit. You get his full setup. leveling points will be attributed to the class of the kit you pick up, not the one you spawned in as. This is also a good way to try other weapons and perks before they are unlocked. It also will also even the playing field for you; there are 2 major perks that go in slot 2 that you wont have access to for a while: one being magnum ammo which increases all of your bullet damage by 25%, the other being Body armor which increases your health by 25%. Without at least one of these, you are going to lose a lot of fights simply because you don't have one. Almost everyone runs around with magnum, therefor picking up a kit will probably give you magnum. You will unlock body armor at rank 14 or 15 I believe, and magnum soon after.

Switch kits to help yourself and others. If you walk in on an enemy medic who just killed your teammate, and then kill him, take his kit, rez your teammate, throw down a medkit for yourself, and then switch back to your kit. You can do the same thing with assault and recon. Whenever you kill one of these classes, or just come across their bodies, it's like finding a powerup:
Medic - Healthkits + Rezzes for those nearby
Assault - Ammo refill
Recon - Motion sensor to show everyone nearby

When you kill an enemy, every other nearby enemy shouts some stupid shit in their native language. If you stab a russian, listen for his russian friends to yell about it loudly, then follow the sound kill them. You do NOT hear when your OWN character yells stuff, so a guy thinking he's in a stealthy spot in the attic of a house will not realize that his character yelled "MAN DOWNNNNNNNN!!!!!" when you killed his friend downstairs.

Be aware that your own character also yells out dumb shit when certain things happen, like a teammate dying near you, and every time you knife. (Knifing is NOT a stealthy method of killing. If you're on US for instance and you knife someone, your character will frequently yell something like "DIE MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!" at the top of his lungs.) This includes when you knife through fences and doors. Always be listening for the enemy team's voice overs.

I got my ass handed to me royally tonight for a few hours, I like the idea of medic and assault supplying health and supplies except I dont seem to have ANYTHING unlocked :( I made it to level 2.75 tonight and can repair things now, very tedious trying to work my way up GRRRRR.

Trying to fly vehicles? fugeddabout it.

Seems like Rush and conquest >>>>> team DM.

My overall KD ratio was probably .2 to be honest.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PRESS Q WHENEVER YOU SEE AN ENEMY!!!!!
I can't believe nobody +1'd or this'd this. The Q button is the third most important button in the game after W and mouse1.

this makes me think none of you spot! I hate you all!

Maybe cuz I didn't explain it to the OP. When you see an enemy press Q. It puts a red triangle above his head and marks him on the map. This is single handedly the most help you can be to your team when first starting. I can't even begin to tell you how often I shoot at red triangles in the brush from literally across the map and actually kill the person. Plus when if you spot someone who then dies you get points! The easiest free points in the game. Don't spam it though. Frantically pressing Q will not spot everyone in sight. press Q in a window/door/bush/cliff where you think an enemy might be.

Q is also used for other team actions to tell peoole you have/want ammo/med kit.

Q is your best friend. Use it and use it often!

few other things,
knifing someone actually implies a charge and then knife. if you are close to someone and point at them then press knife you will charge and they will die
second, helps to occasionally toss a grenade in a building. if you hear yelling then look to kill whoever is inside
lastly, if you have no squad "loyalty" you can look to spawn on a squad that is closest to your destination

(1) Practice makes perfect.

(2) Learn how to lead your targets.

(3) Learn to take into account bullet drop.

(4) Never stand in open ground for too long, otherwise you are sniper bait.

(5) Never stay on mounted turrets longer than a couple of kills, again you are sniper or rocket bait.

(6) Latency majorly affects accuracy in this game, always play on the lowest pinging servers.

(7) Never get in a vehicle unless you are an engineer or at least have an engineer nearby.

(8) Fire at targets in short bursts, accuracy quickly deteriorates if you spray weapons.

(9) Try and use teamwork with squad mates, rambo strategies never work well.

(10) Learn the maps.

Also you might want to google "disable autolevelling" in BFBC2 to make the heli fly a little less terribly. Takes some getting used to though, so if you're happy with it as it is don't worry. The guides will also show you a way to adjust the sensitivity for ground/air/infantry individually, which the game is lacking by default.

How do you do this. I ran across this tip in the other thread but haven't had any luck finding info on it.

Remember that walls dont last. I cant tell you how many times I used to forget that when playing.

Q has limited to zero use, if you only play on Hard Core servers, since there is no map spotting on most HC servers.

Personally i prefer HC over vanilla, just because the guns seem to do more damage, in that if you hit someone they actually go down, and spotting makes it a bit to easy.

most of the tips are pretty nice for a new player who doesn't want to learn everything the hard way, but I'd rather keep the enemy VO to original, I capatilize on 3D sound as much as i do on good aim and twitch skills, if i'm playing against russians i want them to sound like russians so i can pinpoint their location by hearing things like " man down " in russian, if they talk english i'll get confused, thinking that there are friendlies behind that bush, not enemies.

Oh and +1 for the guides, they're essential imo, the mouse input is much smoother and responsive after you get rid of that gay m_filter and negative acceleration, tank turrets will turn much faster too if you set it up right, even with a "plain" 400dpi mouse like mine.

Personally I'd rather wait for a new client patch before bothering again with this half-way shitty console port, hit registration is totally awful right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOw-1yZxFpo

Whore out the 40mm launcher as much as possible as an assault. When you get the perks to carry more grenades, use it. When you get the perk to make your grenades hurt more, use it. Win.

They do sound Russian, but you can understand them. It's still just as easy to identify a nearby enemy player by their voice cues. That way you can also hear people requesting ammo, health, rides and so on.

I read last week in the Dice UK forum that there will be no more extra content or patches for Bad Company 2 unless something just happens to pop up. All Dice's resources are being shifted into Battlefield 3.....(yeah heard that one before)
