Dear HF,

I have just assembled my new box. Trying to boot into bios but nothing is being sent to the monitor. I have the CPU on MB with cooler. RAM in slots and 2900 in its slot with powerlead connected.. Have disconnected all internal cables eg- status led's and reset bios with jumper.

Is there anything else I should try? I have an old 3dfx PCI card which I tried in a PCI slot instead of 2900 to see if it was that (or power issue) but not sure if something so old would work anyway! My current rig is too old to test components (eg- ram, cpu or pci-e card).

System:

Gigabyte GA P35C DS3R
HD2900 PRO
E66750 Intel Duo
OTZ 2 x 1GB Ram
Sonata III (with 500w psu)

Many thanks,
Sx.

are you getting any power to system fans?any beeps, lights indicating possible boot sequence problems

No beeps.

Fan in PSU comes on, fan connected via molex comes on. CPU fan comes on. Graphics card fan starts as soon as power button is pressed (and sounds like case is going to take off!).

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but on the 2900 card, if i plug on pci-e power connector in then the fan on the card spins up but if i plug two in (6-pin) then I just get a flashing light on the card.. I'm pretty sure a 500w PSU is enough for this...?

resit cpu, boot system with only one stick of ram.run system with barebones components place ram in different slots.did motherboard come with a d-bracket that allows you to checked system using four led lights to truble shoot.last resort pul out motherboard place on non-conductive surface and hookup ps.cpu, ram, video card and see if it works then looking to see if it is shorting out aganist case.very last resort take to a computer repair shop and have it looked at

Thanks for that. Tried it all. Still no luck.

I wonder if the issue relates to graphics card.. When i connect two pci-e connectors a red light on it flashes and fan does not spin upto full speed (with one the fan spins straight upto full speed)..

might be a defective card, obvious thing to do is drop it in a known working system.

Sounds like a great idea but i don't have access to any working systems with pci-e slots.

Reassemble your PC outside of the case, using a screwdriver to connect the two power pins to start it. Put the mobo on the mobo box if you still have it.

It could be that your case is shorting out the mobo and therefore no video. If the PC does show video when outside of the case, then you either A) tightened the screws too much or B) had a screw somewhere.

Thank you for your reply - I've tried that - no luck.

Two observations:
1- With 12v ATX connection unplugged and both pci-e connections plugged into graphics card PC turns on (no video) and solid red light on graphics card).

2- With 12v ATX connection plugged in and poth pci-e connections plugged into graphics card PC turns on (no video) and red light on graphics card flashes.

Does that tell you anything?

I was going to suggest cleraing BIOS but I see that you have tried that, anyways a red light being solid or flashing is either a power issue or a settings issue in the BIOS, normally that is.

I have noticed that ASUS users have been having this similar problem because of PEG related settings, ASUS boards with this setting seem to automatically oc the ports by default which is causing issues, don't know if Gigabyte has anything like that.

That is what I am refering to, ATI uses a led for power issues while Nvidia cards make nasty loud noises to indicate power issues.

In the BIOS I would look at overclocking settings to make sure the vid card or the PCI-E ports are not being automatically overclocked.
Another thing I would check are RAM voltages, I have ran into a few cases with MSI boards that had to clear the BIOS or else it would not turn over.

Tazz thank you for your post. Unfortunatly I've never been able to get into the bios on this box - it powers on with no beeps but nothing comes out of the graphics card..

It sounds like i'm going to have to send all the components back.. Without another rig to test them on I don't know what is faulty..

Try that PCI video card you have. It should work if the card itself works.

If its not the vidcard, try re-seating the CPU again. Clean off the thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol and a coffee filter, and re-apply a new layer.

/*------------- </cut n paste> ------------- */

If you have both the 20 OR 24 pin main ATX connector plugged in, AND the 4-Pin ATX12V P4 CPU connector plugged in, then the board should boot fine.

You could test the PSU. Jump start it (on the main atx connector, short the green wire with any black wire, using a paperclip), and see if it stays on. If not, then its a faulty PSU. If it works then proceed...

Setup everything outside of the case, with the mobo on top of its cardboard box. Plug in only the essentials:
- PSU (namely: main 20/24-pin ATX connector and 4-pin ATX12V P4 CPU Connector)
- CPU w/ HSF
- Single stick of ram
- Videocard if there is no onboard video
- Monitor
- Keyboard
- Use a screwdriver if your board doesnt have an onboard power switch
- System speaker/buzzer

Jump the two power switch leads to turn the power on. If it won't post, try different RAM slots. If it won't post, pull out the ram (so no ram in the system) and listen for error beeps. If none, pull the vidcard and listen for error beeps. If none, re-seat the CPU/HSF and try again.

Many thanks for all your replies.. I think i've narrowed it down to a dodgy stick of RAM. I can now get to the bios with one stick installed..

I'm not sure if the other stick is faulty or if I just need to change bios settings.. Will have a look into it (might have to return).

Big thank you to everyone. I'll post back once i have MB back in the case and RAM installed.
